Apple Reportedly Secures a Large Share of TSMC’s Early 2nm Supply as Samsung Targets 1.4nm

TSMC’s 2nm process is in volume production, and Apple is reported to have reserved a large share of early capacity. The percentage is unconfirmed, while Samsung’s SF1.4 is targeted for 2027.

TSMC says its N2 process entered volume production in the fourth quarter of 2025 and is ramping in 2026. Apple is reported to have reserved an unusually large share of that early output, but neither company has confirmed a percentage. Samsung’s SF1.4 process is a longer-term competitor, with mass production targeted for 2027—not an immediate alternative to TSMC’s current 2nm supply.

What does it mean to say Apple is “hogging” TSMC’s 2nm supply?

It means Apple is reportedly reserving a large share of TSMC’s early N2 production—not that Apple owns or controls TSMC factories. One 2025 report put Apple’s share at nearly half of initial output; later reports said Apple could account for more than half, or most, of 2026 capacity. Those claims differ in wording and scope, and neither Apple nor TSMC has publicly confirmed the allocation percentage. MacRumors, 9to5Mac, TrendForce and TechNode have reported versions of the allocation story based on industry sources.

The reports do not consistently establish whether the share refers to initial production or 2026 capacity, only phone processors or Apple’s wider chip portfolio, or wafer starts versus usable, packaged chips. The claim is plausible, but “Apple has secured most of TSMC’s 2nm supply” remains a reported estimate rather than a verified fact.

What TSMC has confirmed about N2

TSMC’s own materials provide a firmer timeline: N2 entered volume production in the fourth quarter of 2025, and the company expects a rapid capacity ramp during 2026. N2 uses a first-generation nanosheet transistor architecture. TSMC’s N2 overview and its 2025 annual report describe the process and ramp.

N2, N2P and A16 are not interchangeable labels

  • N2 is TSMC’s base 2nm process.
  • N2P is a performance-enhanced N2-family version, with volume production scheduled for the second half of 2026.
  • A16 is a separate N2-family derivative with backside power delivery, aimed especially at high-performance computing designs with complex signal routes and dense power delivery. It should not be casually equated with Samsung SF1.4.

Node names are generation and marketing labels, not literal measurements that make transistor dimensions directly comparable across foundries.

Capacity and wafer-price estimates are not official TSMC figures

Secondary coverage has cited estimates of 45,000–50,000 wafers per month across TSMC’s Baoshan and Kaohsiung facilities by the end of 2025, rising to more than 100,000 per month during 2026. The same coverage has cited an estimated price of about $30,000 per wafer. These are supply-chain estimates, not capacity or pricing figures confirmed in TSMC’s cited materials. MacRumors’ account of the reports and 9to5Mac’s coverage attribute the claims to industry reporting.

A wafer count cannot be translated directly into a number of iPhones or chips: the result depends on wafer size, die area, yield, testing and packaging losses, and how capacity is divided among Apple products and other customers. Reserved wafer capacity is also not the same as delivered, usable chips.

Why Apple could be an early, large N2 customer

Apple designs high-volume processors in-house and can plan orders around large product launches. Securing early access to a leading process can help differentiate future iPhones, Macs and other devices, while predictable demand can make a major customer attractive to a foundry during a costly ramp. Apple has also been an early adopter of TSMC’s advanced smartphone processes.

Those business incentives do not establish that Apple has an exclusive arrangement, the largest customer allocation by contract, or any particular financial terms. The reported $30,000 wafer price is an estimate, not a TSMC-published price.

Which Apple chips might use N2?

Supply-chain and analyst reporting widely expects Apple’s A20 family to use N2, with the A20 associated with the iPhone 18 generation and an A20 Pro expected for higher-end models. That connection remains an expectation, not an Apple product announcement. The available reports do not establish that every iPhone 18 model will use N2, or confirm specific configurations for a future iPhone 18e, iPhone Air, foldable iPhone or Mac. MacRumors, TrendForce and an earlier TrendForce report describe the anticipated link.

What N2 could mean for device performance

TSMC describes N2 as a full-generation improvement in performance, power consumption and density over its preceding technologies. Process-level figures repeated in secondary coverage include up to 15% higher performance at the same power, or up to 30% lower power at the same performance. These are process design claims under specified conditions, not promised gains for a finished iPhone. TSMC’s N2 page outlines the process claims; TrendForce repeats comparative estimates.

Real-world results depend on Apple’s chip architecture, clock speeds, thermal limits, GPU and neural-engine design, memory bandwidth, software, and battery capacity. Apple could use process efficiency to improve battery life, raise performance, add functionality, or divide the gains among those goals. A smaller process node is an ingredient in a device, not a direct benchmark or battery-life guarantee.

Samsung’s SF1.4 is a future roadmap target, not a current N2 substitute

Samsung has been developing SF1.4 for several years; it is not a newly started project. At its 2024 foundry event, Samsung said development was progressing toward performance and yield targets, with mass production targeted for 2027. The company has also pointed to its experience with gate-all-around transistor technology. See Samsung’s Global Newsroom announcement and the Samsung Semiconductor version.

As of August 18, 2026, TSMC says N2 is already in volume production, while Samsung’s publicly stated SF1.4 target remains 2027. Samsung has not publicly confirmed that it is mass-producing commercial SF1.4 chipsets in 2026. Nor does the “1.4nm” label by itself establish that SF1.4 chips will outperform N2 chips: the companies use different process naming systems, designs, libraries and performance targets.

A meaningful foundry comparison would also require comparable information about yield, defect density, available capacity, design-kit maturity, customer tape-outs, power delivery, packaging and cost. The cited public roadmaps do not establish a complete, like-for-like comparison on those measures.

Why Samsung’s later process still matters

If Samsung can turn its roadmap into reliable, competitive high-volume production, SF1.4 could give fabless chip designers another advanced manufacturing option. More alternatives could reduce dependence on a single foundry, improve customer negotiating leverage and provide another route for companies concerned about capacity or supply-chain concentration. But a target date is not proof of customer adoption or commercial success; Samsung still has to demonstrate manufacturability, yield, capacity and cost that customers will accept.

What a large Apple reservation could mean for other chipmakers

If Apple reserves a substantial portion of early N2 capacity, other customers might receive later production slots or face higher costs during the initial ramp. Some could instead use enhanced 3nm processes, port designs to another foundry, delay a launch or lean more heavily on chiplets and advanced packaging. These are possible consequences, not proof that a market-wide shortage is occurring.

Industry reporting identifies Qualcomm as another potential early customer and has named Nvidia, Amazon’s Annapurna and Google among companies that could use N2 later. These reported customer lists are not confirmed order books. MacRumors and TrendForce summarize customer expectations.

Early-node constraints are common: factories ramp progressively, yields develop, customers qualify designs and packaging can limit finished output even when wafers are available. A capacity reservation, actual shipment volume, effective output after yield and packaging losses, and a consumer-facing shortage are different things. A large Apple reservation alone does not show that consumers will be unable to buy an iPhone.

What consumers should take from the reports

The reports may signal that Apple wants an early position for future processors, but they do not establish specifications or performance for an unannounced iPhone. Even if some A20 chips use N2, model-by-model differences will depend on Apple’s eventual product choices. Advanced packaging also matters: a report that Apple may adopt wafer-level multi-chip module packaging is a separate supply-chain claim, not a confirmed Apple design decision. TechNode reported the packaging claim.
