Apple reportedly discussed acquiring Lux Optics, the company behind the Halide camera app, in summer 2025 as it explored ways to strengthen the iPhone’s built-in Camera app. The talks ended without an acquisition in September 2025. Apple later hired Lux co-founder and designer Sebastiaan de With, but that hiring did not make Halide or Lux an Apple product.
What Apple reportedly pursued
The best-supported description is that Apple held acquisition talks with Lux Optics, not that it completed a purchase or signed a publicly confirmed deal. The account was reported by The Information and became public in March 2026 through coverage of a legal dispute between Lux co-founders. Apple has not publicly confirmed the talks in the reporting cited here.
Coverage places the discussions in summer 2025 and says they ended in September. Lux’s founders reportedly believed future Halide updates might increase the company’s value and produce a better offer later. The reports do not establish whether Apple made a formal offer, what price might have been discussed, or which specific assets were included. Engadget’s account also describes talks that did not result in a deal.
What Lux Optics makes
Lux is more than the maker of one camera app. Its website lists four products: Halide, Kino, Spectre, and Orion.

| App | What it does |
|---|---|
| Halide | Manual and advanced photography controls for iPhone and iPad. Lux describes its design as approachable for beginners while offering controls for experienced photographers. Lux’s Halide Mark II introduction |
| Kino | Video capture aimed at more deliberate workflows, including Apple Log and color presets. Lux’s Kino introduction |
| Spectre | Computational long-exposure photography, including effects such as light trails. Lux product directory |
| Orion | An app that lets an iPad act as an HDMI monitor with compatible capture hardware. Lux’s Orion overview |
Together, these products represent experience across camera interfaces, computational photography, video capture, and monitoring. That breadth may help explain Apple’s interest, but the reporting does not identify a definitive list of Lux features or assets Apple sought.
Why Apple might want Lux’s expertise
Apple’s built-in Camera app is designed to make taking a picture straightforward. Specialist apps such as Halide expose more direct controls and workflows for people who want to adjust focus or exposure, capture in RAW-oriented formats, or exercise more control over a shot. Lux’s own description of Halide emphasizes combining an approachable interface with advanced photography tools.

- 【Quick Install & Easy Operation】Simply screw the filter on the phone clip, then clamp it on your phone, during a photo shoot, easily rotate the filter and adjust shoot angle to get the best polarizing effect. Please check whether it is compatible with your mobile phone.
The Information reported that Lux’s intellectual property was an important consideration in the discussions and framed the effort as part of Apple’s interest in upgrading its native Camera app. That supports the view that Apple saw value in software expertise and camera-related IP, but it does not reveal the terms of any proposed transaction or prove that Apple received Lux code.
Reports have also connected Apple’s interest to possible professional-grade camera software for future iPhone Pro models. Those details come from unnamed-source reporting, not an Apple product announcement; they should be treated as speculation rather than confirmed specifications. 9to5Mac’s coverage discusses that reported connection.

Talks, hiring, and the lawsuit are separate events
After the acquisition discussions ended, Apple later hired Lux co-founder and designer Sebastiaan de With. MacRumors reported that he announced in January 2026 that he had joined Apple’s design team. Hiring one founder is not the same as acquiring Lux, its apps, or its intellectual property. MacRumors’ account also covers the subsequent dispute.
The acquisition story surfaced alongside a lawsuit filed by Lux co-founder Ben Sandofsky against de With. Reports describe allegations concerning Lux funds and confidential material, including claims that material or source code was improperly provided to Apple. De With’s representatives denied that he used, transferred, or disclosed Lux intellectual property in connection with his Apple job. These are disputed claims, not findings that Apple received Lux code. Apple was not named as a defendant and was not accused of wrongdoing in the reported case.

What the failed deal means for Halide users
Lux continued to list Halide and its other apps on its website in 2026, so the reported talks did not make Halide an Apple app. Lux’s app access page says Halide offers a seven-day free trial for annual memberships and a one-time purchase option; it does not establish the current U.S. price. The reported hiring of de With alone is not evidence that Apple has incorporated Halide’s code or that Lux’s other products have changed ownership.
For iPhone users, the practical possibility is that Apple could make its own Camera app more capable for people who want advanced controls or video tools. The reporting does not establish which features, if any, Apple will ship, when they might arrive, or whether any would derive from Lux. Existing Halide users should not assume either that the app is being discontinued or that its features are coming to Apple’s Camera app.
