Apple Q1 2026 Earnings: What Investors Expected—and What Apple Reported

Apple beat widely cited pre-report estimates for fiscal Q1 2026, driven by iPhone and Services growth. Here are the results, March outlook and key risks.

Apple reported its fiscal first-quarter 2026 results on January 29, 2026; the quarter ended December 27, 2025. The result topped widely cited pre-earnings estimates, led by a 23% increase in iPhone revenue, but Apple also warned that constrained iPhone supply and rising memory costs would matter in the March quarter.

What investors expected before Apple’s January 29 report

Before the results, the central question was whether the iPhone 17 launch cycle could drive a strong holiday quarter. Investors were also watching Services growth, China demand, Apple’s AI plans, tariffs and component availability.

Consensus estimates varied by provider. IG cited about $138.4 billion in revenue; MarketBeat listed $138.25 billion. Both listed diluted earnings per share (EPS) expectations of about $2.67. These were provider-specific estimates, not company guidance. IG’s preview and MarketBeat’s earnings data show the estimates.

What Apple reported

Apple posted $143.756 billion in revenue, $42.097 billion in net income and diluted EPS of $2.84. Revenue rose 16% year over year, while EPS increased from $2.40. The figures below compare reported results with the cited pre-report estimates; iPhone and Services figures are reported results, not consensus estimates. Apple’s Q1 2026 Form 10-Q provides the financial results.

iPhone revenue Expected to be the primary upside driver; no comparable estimate stated $85.269 billion, up 23% year over year
Services revenue Continued double-digit growth expected; no comparable estimate stated $30.013 billion, up 14% year over year

Why the iPhone 17 cycle mattered most

iPhone revenue reached $85.269 billion, up 23% year over year. Apple attributed the increase primarily to higher sales of Pro models, and management described demand as unusually strong. That establishes strong revenue and product-mix contributions, but the reported figures alone do not separate unit growth from pricing or mix.

Apple said it exited December with “very lean” channel inventory and was chasing demand amid limited advanced-node chip capacity. Strong demand can signal product appeal, but supply constraints can defer sales or leave customers waiting. The disclosures do not quantify how many sales, if any, were lost rather than shifted into a later quarter. Management’s comments are in the earnings-call transcript.

Services growth supported margins, but did not remove risk

Services revenue grew 14% to $30.013 billion. Apple said advertising, the App Store and cloud services primarily drove the increase. The category’s gross margin was 76.5%, compared with 75.0% a year earlier; Products gross margin was 40.7%, and total gross margin was 48.2%. The figures show why Services mix can support overall profitability, but revenue growth is not the same as profit growth, and the Services category contains businesses with different economics.

App Store and advertising businesses also face legal and regulatory exposure. Apple’s filing discusses risks to future margins from mix, costs, tariffs and other factors; the Services result does not establish that its growth rate or margin will persist.

China rebounded; other product categories were uneven

Greater China revenue was $25.526 billion, up from $18.513 billion a year earlier—about 38%. Apple’s filing says iPhone made up a moderately higher proportion of Greater China sales than in the prior-year quarter. That points to iPhone strength as an important contributor, but one quarter does not prove a lasting regional turnaround or establish whether gains came from market-share changes, launch timing or comparisons with the prior year.

Results outside iPhone and Services were mixed:

Category Revenue Year-over-year change Apple’s stated driver
Mac $8.386 billion Down 7% Primarily lower laptop and desktop sales
iPad $8.595 billion Up 6% Stronger iPad and iPad Pro sales, partly offset by lower iPad mini sales
Wearables, Home and Accessories $11.493 billion Down 2% Primarily lower Wearables revenue

The figures and explanations are from Apple’s Form 10-Q. A record companywide quarter therefore did not mean every product line was growing.

What Apple said about AI and Siri

Apple announced a collaboration with Google on the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, which Apple said would help power future Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized Siri. Apple said the work would use on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute. It did not disclose commercial terms or provide a standalone AI revenue forecast.

The announcement is strategically relevant, but it is not evidence of near-term revenue. Whether AI leads to hardware upgrades, Services monetization or both remains an open question, not a reported financial metric. Apple’s comments appear in the earnings-call transcript.

March-quarter outlook: growth alongside supply and margin pressure

For the quarter ending in March 2026, Apple forecast revenue growth of 13%–16% year over year and gross margin of 48%–49%. It expected Services growth at roughly the December quarter’s 14% rate, operating expenses of $18.4 billion–$18.7 billion, other income and expense of about $100 million excluding potential mark-to-market effects on minority investments, and an estimated tax rate of approximately 17.5%.

Management also said iPhone supply would be constrained. The revenue outlook therefore reflected not only demand but Apple’s estimate of how much product it could deliver. It is a forecast, not a guarantee of shipments or a measure of demand unconstrained by supply.

Apple said rising memory costs would have a larger effect on March-quarter gross margin. It also said advanced-node chip availability constrained iPhone supply. These create a trade-off: strong demand may support sales, but supply limits can defer revenue while higher component costs can pressure profitability. The outlook and commentary are in the earnings-call transcript.

Tariffs, investment and shareholder returns

Apple said its December-quarter outlook assumed tariff rates, policies and application remained as they were at the time of the call. It put December-quarter tariff costs at approximately $1.4 billion and said product mix and leverage had partly offset them. That is a reported quarter’s cost, not a fixed forecast for future tariff expense; policy and costs can change.

Research and development expense rose 32% year over year to $10.887 billion. Apple attributed the increase primarily to infrastructure, headcount and engineering-program costs. The company did not identify the whole increase as AI spending, so it should not be treated as a standalone measure of AI investment.

Apple returned nearly $32 billion to shareholders during the quarter: $25 billion in open-market repurchases and $3.9 billion in dividends and equivalents. The quarterly dividend was $0.26 per share. Repurchases and dividends describe capital returns, not a guarantee of future share performance.

What the quarter did—and did not—establish

The results confirmed a strong holiday period led by iPhone and Services, with a notable Greater China rebound. They did not establish that iPhone growth, China’s improvement or Services growth would continue at the same pace, nor that AI would soon produce measurable revenue. The next test was whether Apple could convert demand into delivered devices while managing supply constraints, memory costs, tariffs and margin expectations.
