Short answer: Apple’s “six months for $3” promotion was legitimate, but it was a limited February 2025 offer, not a standing plan. Eligible new subscribers in the U.S., U.K. and Canada paid $2.99 total (about 50 cents per month), and reports listed February 27, 2025, as the end date. As of August 18, 2026, Apple’s U.S. page instead shows three months for $1.99 for new individual subscribers, followed by $11.99 per month.

What the original Apple Music deal actually was
The headline referred to a discounted six-month subscription, not six months free and not $3 per month. The total charge was $2.99, commonly rounded to $3. Dividing that amount by six gives an effective cost of about $0.50 per month.

Macworld’s contemporaneous coverage tied the promotion to Apple’s Super Bowl LIX campaign. Engadget’s report described the $2.99 price, eligibility limits and automatic renewal.

Is the six-month offer still available?
No. The current Apple U.S. page does not support the old six-month $2.99 promotion. On August 18, 2026, it displayed this individual introductory offer:
- Three months for $1.99 for new individual subscribers.
- $11.99 per month after the introductory period.
Apple also displayed a family promotion of three months for $4.99, then $19.99 per month. These are current U.S. prices shown by Apple and may differ by country, account, device or promotion.
Who could qualify for the old promotion?
The historical offer was aimed at eligible new subscribers. “New” is determined by Apple Account and subscription history, not simply by whether you have opened the Music app. Previous Apple Music use, a prior trial, an active or recently canceled subscription, or another introductory offer could make an account ineligible.

Apple’s promotional terms generally prevent combining introductory offers. Review the terms attached to the offer presented to your account at checkout; do not assume that owning an iPhone guarantees eligibility. Existing Apple Music members could not simply claim the historical deal.
Which devices were required to redeem it?
Contemporaneous deal coverage reported redemption on an eligible Apple device: an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, a Mac running macOS Ventura 13 or later, or Apple Vision Pro. Those were reported requirements for that promotion, not universal requirements for playing Apple Music today.
Apple says the service also works across iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, Apple Vision Pro, Apple TV 4K, Android, Windows, smart TVs, game consoles, Sonos, Roku, Alexa and Google Nest devices, with compatibility varying by hardware and app version. How to claim the current Apple offer
- Open the Apple Music app or visit Apple’s subscription page.
- Select the trial or promotional offer displayed for your account. If prompted, choose See More Plans.
- Choose individual, family or student, if available.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for purchases.
- Add or confirm a valid payment method.
- Before selecting Join (or the equivalent button), check the promotional price, duration, renewal date and post-promotion price.

How to avoid an unexpected renewal charge
- Save the renewal date shown on the confirmation screen.
- Record the exact plan and price; the historical $10.99 rate is not the current U.S. individual price.
- Manage the subscription through your Apple Account subscription settings or the platform where you started it.
- Cancel before renewal if you do not want the paid plan. Depending on the offer terms, canceling immediately can affect access through the promotional period, so read the applicable cancellation language.
- Do not assume a charge will be reversed if you cancel after the renewal date.

Apple describes Apple Music as an ad-free service with more than 100 million songs, offline downloads, personalized recommendations, curated playlists, Spatial Audio and lossless audio. Individual, family and student plans include access to Apple Music Classical. These are service features, not special benefits of the expired six-month promotion.

Is the current offer a good fit?
Reasons to consider it
- You want ad-free listening and enough time to test the catalog, recommendations and playlist tools.
- You use Apple devices, Siri, CarPlay, HomePod or Apple TV and value ecosystem integration.
- You want Spatial Audio, lossless playback or Apple Music Classical.
- You need a family plan for multiple household members.
Reasons to compare alternatives
- You want a permanent free tier; Apple Music becomes paid after the introductory period.
- You mainly use non-Apple hardware and do not need Apple-specific integration.
- You already maintain a large library and do not want to migrate playlists.
- You qualify for the student plan, listed at $6.99 per month with one month free for new subscribers, subject to student verification.
- You already pay for several Apple services. Apple One starts at $19.95 per month in the U.S., but bundling costs more than standalone music if you will not use the other services.
Other services to compare
- Spotify: known for discovery, playlist sharing and broad cross-platform use.
- YouTube Music: combines official releases with performances, covers, remixes and other YouTube-linked content.
- Amazon Music: worth examining for Prime members and Alexa households; plan benefits vary.
- Apple One: potentially useful when you already subscribe to Apple TV, Apple Arcade, iCloud+ or other bundled services.
Current competitor prices are not included here because they change by market and plan. Check each provider’s official page before switching.
If the offer does not appear
- Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Apple Account and viewing the correct country storefront.
- Check both the Apple Music app and Apple’s subscription page.
- Read the eligibility message at checkout; a prior trial, existing subscription or another offer may block the promotion.
- Do not create extra accounts to evade restrictions.
- Contact Apple Support if your account appears eligible but checkout shows a different price.
If checkout displays a different renewal amount, use that confirmation screen and the attached terms as the authoritative information. Promotional prices and standard rates can change.
