Apple’s $599 A18 Pro laptop is real, but it is called the MacBook Neo—and it is no longer an upcoming spring release. Apple announced it on March 4, 2026, and made it available on March 11. The Neo is an entry-level Mac for everyday use, with a low starting price balanced against 8GB of memory, 256GB of storage and limited ports.
MacBook Neo release date and U.S. price
Apple announced the MacBook Neo and opened preorders on March 4, 2026. It became available in the United States on March 11. The announcement’s $599 starting price is for the 256GB base configuration; Apple also listed a $499 U.S. education price for eligible buyers. [Apple’s announcement] [Availability announcement]
A reported $699 configuration pairs 512GB of storage with Touch ID, while the $599 model has no Touch ID. That $100 step-up may matter if you want more room for files or biometric sign-in. Configuration details can change; check Apple’s U.S. Store for current pricing before buying. The $499 education price requires eligibility, and the final checkout total can also include sales tax and accessories.

What the A18 Pro chip means in a Mac
The Neo uses Apple’s A18 Pro, a chip from the A-series associated with the iPhone 16 Pro generation, rather than an M-series chip. It runs macOS and is a Mac, not an iPhone in laptop form. The A18 Pro’s efficiency, integrated graphics and Neural Engine suit ordinary productivity and selected on-device AI tasks; the chip’s “Pro” name does not mean the Neo matches a MacBook Pro.
Apple designed the Neo as a fanless laptop. That means silent operation, useful in classrooms, libraries and shared spaces. It also signals a different priority from a machine designed for prolonged, demanding workloads. Without independent thermal testing, the design alone does not establish a specific performance ceiling, but buyers doing sustained professional work should consider a MacBook Air or Pro instead.
How to read Apple’s speed and battery claims
Apple says the Neo is up to 50% faster on everyday tasks than the bestselling PC laptop with the latest shipping Intel Core Ultra 5 processor, up to 3× faster on on-device AI workloads, and up to 2× faster on photo-editing tasks. These are Apple’s comparisons, not universal performance guarantees or independent test results. Apple used preproduction Neo systems and specified software versions, comparing against a particular Core Ultra 5 PC with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Results depend on the app, workload, duration and system configuration. Apple describes its testing and comparison.

Likewise, “up to 16 hours” is Apple’s battery estimate from defined wireless-web and video-streaming tests on preproduction systems, not a promise of a full day for every owner. Screen brightness, video calls, external displays, background activity, applications and wireless conditions affect actual runtime.
The trade-offs to consider before paying $599
8GB of memory
Eight gigabytes may be sufficient for browsing, documents, video streaming, video calls and routine schoolwork. It offers less room for heavy multitasking, large creative projects, virtual machines and developer environments. Unified memory is not normally user-upgradable, so consider whether your workload is likely to grow during the years you plan to keep the laptop.
256GB of storage
The base SSD can be tight if you keep substantial photo or video libraries, large games, offline media or development tools on the computer. External storage is an option, but it uses a USB-C port and may call for a hub if you have other peripherals.

Two unequal USB-C ports
The ports are not interchangeable for speed: one supports USB 3 up to 10Gbps; the other supports USB 2 up to 480Mbps. Both can charge the laptop, but Apple specifies external-display support through the USB 3 port. The announcement does not establish the display’s precise supported resolution and refresh rate, so check Apple’s current technical specifications if those details matter to your setup. A hub may be useful for a desk with multiple devices, but it is not necessary for every buyer.
Touch ID costs more
In the reported configurations, Touch ID is included with the 512GB model, not the $599 base version. If you want biometric sign-in, compare the higher configuration’s current price with the value you place on the additional storage and convenience.

Apple Intelligence and iPhone features
Apple says the Neo supports Apple Intelligence, including features such as Writing Tools, Live Translation and Photos’ Clean Up. Hardware support does not guarantee that every feature will be available to every buyer: availability can depend on language, region and software version, and Apple described Apple Intelligence as beta in the cited announcement. Review Apple’s current feature availability before buying based on a particular tool. The Neo also supports Apple ecosystem features such as Handoff, Universal Clipboard and iPhone Mirroring for compatible devices and software.

MacBook Neo or MacBook Air?
The Neo is the lower-cost choice for everyday computing; the Air is the more sensible comparison if you need additional performance headroom, memory or storage, or expect heavier sustained workloads. Apple’s March 2026 availability announcement also covered a MacBook Air with M5. The Associated Press reported a $1,099 starting price for the 13-inch Air at that time, but prices and configurations can change; check Apple’s current MacBook Air page before comparing checkout totals. For a Chromebook, the key question is whether browser-based work and Google services meet your needs or whether you require macOS applications and Apple ecosystem features. For Windows laptops, compare the specific processor, memory, storage and display configuration rather than treating Apple’s single benchmark comparison as representative of every PC. Google’s Chromebook page is a starting point for that category.
Who is the MacBook Neo for?
- Students and educators: A fit for browser-based learning, documents, note-taking, video calls and ordinary coursework, especially if eligible for the education price.
- Families and first-time Mac buyers: A lower-cost way to get macOS in a quiet, portable aluminum laptop.
- iPhone owners: A natural option if Continuity tools such as Handoff and Universal Clipboard are useful in your routine.
- Existing Mac owners wanting a secondary machine: Suitable for lighter everyday tasks rather than a replacement for a workstation-class setup.
Who should look elsewhere?
- Video editors handling demanding 4K or 8K projects, and developers relying on virtual machines, containers or large local toolchains.
- People who routinely keep many memory-intensive apps open or expect to store a large local media library.
- Gamers seeking high-end graphics performance.
- Users who need multiple external displays or several fast USB-C connections at once.
- Buyers who need Touch ID but do not want to pay for the higher configuration.
- Anyone expecting MacBook Air or MacBook Pro sustained-performance capability at the Neo’s entry price.
These are workload-based cautions drawn from the Neo’s configuration and design, not claims that every buyer will encounter a specific performance problem.

Buying with a personal-finance lens
Compare the cost of the configuration you will actually use, not just the advertised entry price. Account for the storage tier, any hub or external drive your setup requires, sales tax and optional coverage. Apple Trade In may reduce the purchase cost, but value depends on the device and condition and can be lower than a private sale; see Apple Trade In. AppleCare terms and prices should be checked at checkout rather than assumed; details are at AppleCare.
Apple’s announcement says eligible U.S. customers can use Apple Card Monthly Installments at 0% APR and receive 3% Daily Cash, subject to terms and exclusions. Financing is not a price reduction, and the offer is not available to everyone; review current terms at Apple Card Monthly Installments.
