Apple announced SignTime on May 19, 2021, and planned to launch it the next day as an on-demand sign-language interpreting service for customer-care conversations. At launch, customers could use a web browser to contact AppleCare or Retail Customer Care, with ASL in the United States, BSL in the United Kingdom, and LSF in France. Apple also said visitors to its stores in those countries could connect remotely with an interpreter without booking ahead.
What SignTime was designed to do
SignTime was presented as a way for customers who use sign language to communicate with Apple customer support through an interpreter. Apple’s May 19, 2021 announcement described browser-based access to AppleCare and Retail Customer Care, as well as remote interpreting for Apple Store visitors. Apple’s launch announcement set out those details.

Apple attributed this statement to Sarah Herrlinger, its senior director of Global Accessibility Policy and Initiatives: “At Apple, we’ve long felt that the world’s best technology should respond to everyone’s needs, and our teams work relentlessly to build accessibility into everything we make,” The statement describes Apple’s accessibility aims; it is not a measure of SignTime’s results.

Launch countries and sign languages
| Country at launch | Sign language named by Apple |
|---|---|
| United States | American Sign Language (ASL) |

Apple initially announced the service for these three countries and said it planned to expand it. The announcement does not establish broader launch-era language support.

How customers could access it at launch
AppleCare and Retail Customer Care
For customer-care interactions, Apple said customers could use a web browser to connect with an on-demand interpreter. The announcement does not identify a required Apple device, browser, or detailed sequence of steps. An iPhone shown in launch imagery is not evidence that an iPhone was required.
Apple Store visits
For store visits in the launch countries, Apple said customers could remotely access an interpreter without booking in advance. This is the in-store arrangement described in the 2021 announcement; it should not be taken as confirmation of current procedures at a particular location.

What later Apple reporting says about availability
An excerpt from Apple’s FY25 accessibility report lists on-demand sign-language interpreting for customers and team members in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Korea, Australia, and Japan. The report heading includes “How to contact Apple using SignTime.” This later country list indicates wider reported availability than the three launch countries, but it does not confirm that every country uses the SignTime name or has identical eligibility, languages, or access steps. Apple’s FY25 accessibility report is the cited source for the list.
