Update — August 18, 2026: Apple’s M3 iPad Air is no longer the current model, so you cannot pre-order it as a new product from Apple. The pre-order opened on March 4, 2025, and retail availability began March 12, 2025. Apple now sells an M4 iPad Air from $749 in the U.S.; M3 units may still appear as Apple Certified Refurbished or remaining third-party stock.
The short answer
Buy an M3 iPad Air in 2026 only when its discount is substantial. It remains a capable Apple-silicon tablet with Apple Intelligence support, Apple Pencil Pro compatibility and 11-inch or 13-inch screen options. If its price is close to the current M4 iPad Air, choose the M4 for the newer platform, current retail support and longer practical ownership runway.
For ordinary streaming, browsing, reading, note-taking and schoolwork, Apple’s current A16 iPad starts at $449 and may be the better value. Choose an iPad Pro when you specifically need its higher-end display, graphics or professional external-display capabilities.

What Apple announced in March 2025
Apple introduced the iPad Air with an M3 chip in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. It came in Space Gray, Blue, Purple and Starlight, supported Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular connectivity, and worked with Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil USB-C and a new Magic Keyboard for iPad Air. Apple described it as built for Apple Intelligence.

Pre-order and release timeline
- March 4, 2025: Apple announced the M3 iPad Air and opened pre-orders through its online store and Apple Store app in 29 countries and regions, including the United States.
- March 12, 2025: The tablets became generally available through Apple and participating retailers.
That is a historical launch timeline, not a live pre-order opportunity in 2026. Apple’s Canada announcement also records the original regional rollout: Apple Canada newsroom.
Launch pricing and configurations
The verified Apple announcement used UK pricing. It listed the 11-inch model at £599 and the 13-inch model at £799, with education prices of £549 and £749 respectively. These are UK launch prices, not U.S. prices, and they should not be converted into a supposed U.S. launch price.
Storage, cellular capability and local taxes changed the final amount. Wi-Fi is usually sufficient for people with dependable phone hotspot access; cellular is more convenient for travel and field work but can add both hardware and carrier costs.

Refurbished M3 snapshot
Apple’s Certified Refurbished inventory still listed M3 models on August 18, 2026, although stock and prices can change without notice. Examples observed that day were an 11-inch Wi-Fi 256GB model at $669, an 11-inch Wi-Fi + Cellular 128GB model at $709 and a 13-inch Wi-Fi 128GB model at $759. Check the live Apple refurbished iPad Air page before relying on any price.
What the M3 chip changed
Apple claimed the M3 iPad Air was nearly twice as fast as the M1 iPad Air and up to 3.5 times faster than the A14 Bionic iPad Air. It also brought the M3 graphics architecture and hardware-accelerated ray tracing to the Air line. These are Apple’s comparative claims, not independent benchmark results.

The extra capability is most relevant to demanding games, illustration, photo and video applications, 3D work and heavy multitasking. The operating system remains iPadOS, however, so macOS-style file management, background processing and professional software availability can matter more than chip speed for some workflows.
Apple Intelligence on the M3 iPad Air
“Built for Apple Intelligence” means the hardware is eligible for Apple’s system-level AI features; it does not guarantee every feature in every country or language. Availability depends on the iPadOS release, language, region, account requirements and Apple’s rollout schedule.

- Notification and message summaries can condense incoming information.
- Image creation and editing tools and Genmoji are available where supported.
- Siri improvements and ChatGPT integration may require supported software, language and regional settings.
- Many requests run on-device; more complex processing can use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.
Apple Intelligence is not an unrestricted chatbot and does not make the iPad equivalent to a MacBook. Third-party services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Adobe tools remain separate apps with their own requirements and policies. Apple identifies the current model as M4 on its iPad Air product page and U.S. buying page.
What the Air does not include
- No ProMotion high-refresh display.
- No OLED or mini-LED panel.
- No Face ID; authentication uses Touch ID in the top button.
- No iPad Pro positioning for Thunderbolt/USB4-class connectivity and highest-end display workflows.
- Apple Pencil and keyboard accessories cost extra.
- iPadOS still has different multitasking and file-management behavior from macOS.
Choosing storage and connectivity
Storage
- 128GB: Appropriate for light users who stream and rely on cloud storage.
- 256GB: The safer general choice for games, downloaded media, photos and large creative apps.
- 512GB or 1TB: Better for video projects, extensive offline media and professional files.
Wi-Fi or cellular
Choose Wi-Fi if your phone can reliably provide a hotspot. Choose Wi-Fi + Cellular for frequent travel, field work or a need for independent connectivity, while factoring in carrier charges.

Choose a discounted M3 Air
It makes sense for buyers wanting Apple Intelligence, Pencil Pro support or a 13-inch screen at a meaningful discount, and who are comfortable with refurbished or remaining inventory.

Choose the M4 Air
Choose M4 when the M3 price gap is small, you want a new current-generation device, or you value the longest practical support runway.
Choose the base A16 iPad
The A16 iPad is the value choice for media, browsing, reading, notes and ordinary productivity when Apple Intelligence and Pencil Pro are not priorities. Apple lists it from $449.
Choose iPad Pro
Pay for Pro when you need its display quality, advanced graphics, external-display capabilities or a high-end creative workflow and can justify the premium.
Accessories and total cost
Budget separately for the accessory that matches your use. Apple Pencil Pro suits drawing, handwriting and markup; Apple Pencil USB-C is aimed at lower-cost writing and basic markup. The Magic Keyboard for iPad Air is useful for substantial typing but unnecessary for a tablet used mainly for video, reading or games. Cases, chargers, AppleCare+ and cellular service can also materially change the ownership cost.

- Confirm that the listing is Apple Certified Refurbished rather than marketplace-used stock.
- Compare the complete configuration, including storage, screen size and cellular capability.
- Check the live warranty, return terms and available stock before payment.
- Compare the total price with the current M4 equivalent; a small discount does not compensate for buying the older generation.
Verdict
The M3 iPad Air was a strong March 2025 release, but “pre-order now” is inaccurate in 2026. Buy one only when the refurbished or clearance price creates a clear saving, especially for a 13-inch model. Otherwise, the M4 iPad Air is the more defensible purchase. Choose the A16 iPad for basic use and iPad Pro for display- or workflow-critical professional work.
