Employees were notified on March 28, 2024, and the layoffs were scheduled to take effect on May 27, 2024. The filings establish the number, locations and dates—but they do not identify the employees’ projects or prove that all 614 worked on Apple’s abandoned electric-car effort.
The timing closely followed Apple’s reported decision to end its decade-long “Project Titan” program. Contemporary reporting linked many affected workers to the car effort and said some display-development employees were also included.
What the California WARN filings confirm
California Employment Development Department records list 614 permanent job eliminations across eight Apple locations in the Santa Clara area. The filings are the strongest public evidence for the scale and timing of the reduction.

The notices are available in the California EDD’s WARN report for July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. California’s WARN program requires covered employers to provide advance notice of qualifying mass layoffs and closures. That 60-day framework explains the gap between the March 28 notices and the May 27 effective date.

Because the forms are organized by employer and location, not by product team, they cannot establish how many of the 614 employees worked on a car, displays or another Apple program.
How the layoffs followed Project Titan’s cancellation
Reuters reported that Apple told employees internally on February 27, 2024, that it was ending its electric-car project, widely known as Project Titan. The program had operated for roughly a decade and was associated in reporting with ambitions ranging from an electric vehicle to more advanced autonomous-driving technology. Apple never launched a production vehicle or publicly published a complete description of the program.
Reporting described repeated changes to the project’s leadership, technical goals and possible launch plans. Reuters said some employees were expected to move into Apple’s artificial-intelligence work, while others would be dismissed. That does not mean the entire former car team transferred to AI or that every person covered by the later WARN notices belonged to Titan.

The sequence—cancellation on February 27, WARN notifications on March 28 and layoffs scheduled for May 27—supports a connection between the wind-down and the job cuts. It is not, by itself, proof that the car project caused every one of the 614 eliminations.
Were all 614 workers part of Apple’s car effort?
No public document establishes that. The California filings do not name Project Titan, an electric-vehicle division or any other Apple product group.
TechCrunch, Bloomberg Law and Forbes reported that many affected employees were associated with buildings connected to the canceled car program. Those outlets also reported that at least part of the reduction involved Apple’s advanced display work, often described as a microLED or next-generation display project. The project connections are reported context, not statements contained in the WARN forms.

Forbes identified one filing address as associated in reporting with LuxVue Technology, the microLED company Apple acquired in 2014. The WARN record itself does not label that facility a display laboratory or identify the work performed there.
The most accurate description is therefore that Apple confirmed 614 California layoffs shortly after ending Project Titan, while reporting indicates the affected workforce also included employees tied to other canceled or wound-down projects.
What happened to the rest of the car team?
Reuters reported that some people from the car program were being reassigned to AI-related roles. Public reporting does not provide a complete accounting of how many employees transferred, left voluntarily, received severance, were reassigned elsewhere or were included in the California WARN notices.

Why Apple abandoned the project
Available reporting points to a combination of technical, strategic and financial challenges rather than one officially stated cause. Coverage described uncertainty over whether Apple would pursue a highly autonomous vehicle or a more conventional electric car, as well as unresolved questions about timing and manufacturing.
Those pressures are analytically important: automotive development requires long product cycles, specialized supply chains, regulatory approvals and manufacturing capabilities that differ sharply from Apple’s traditional hardware businesses. They help explain why the program’s changing scope was difficult to sustain, but Apple has not publicly attributed the cancellation to a single factor such as profitability or one failed technology.

Apple reported approximately 161,000 full-time-equivalent employees in its fiscal 2023 annual filing. Against that workforce, 614 positions represent less than 1 percent. The company-wide percentage should not obscure the local effect: the reductions were concentrated across eight specialized Silicon Valley facilities and followed the shutdown of high-profile development programs.

The Associated Press and KQED described the episode as Apple’s first major publicly reported post-pandemic layoff wave. It was a concentrated project-level reduction, not evidence of a company-wide restructuring.
What remains unknown
- The exact number of the 614 employees who worked on Project Titan.
- How many employees were connected to the display program or other projects.
- How many former Titan workers transferred to AI or other Apple teams.
- Individual severance arrangements and the treatment of contractors.
- Apple’s detailed internal explanation for the project’s cancellation and the workforce breakdown.
WARN totals also do not necessarily capture contractors, employees outside California, people affected through ordinary attrition or workers who remained at Apple after reassignment.
What the story means for Apple’s car ambitions
Project Titan’s end shows the limits of extending Apple’s design-and-software model into vehicle manufacturing without a public product ever reaching launch. The company spent years exploring the opportunity, but the reported shifts in autonomy, vehicle design and production strategy made the business case increasingly difficult to maintain.
For employees and investors, the California filings provide a concrete measure of the retrenchment. For anyone describing the event, precision matters: “Apple laid off 614 California employees after ending its car project” is supported; “Apple laid off 614 electric-car workers” is not.
