Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApple Cash failures have different fixes depending on whether you can’t send or receive money, add funds, transfer to a bank, or use your balance for purchases. First check Apple’s System Status, then look for a Wallet notice such as Verify Identity, Restricted, Locked, or In Review. Those notices, along with the exact transaction and error message, point to the right next step.
Identify what is failing
| What you see | Common causes to check |
|---|---|
| Apple Cash is missing in Messages or Wallet | Apple Cash is turned off, your region or device is unsupported, software needs updating, account setup is incomplete, or iCloud and iMessage use different Apple Accounts. |
| A payment will not send | Identity verification, recipient eligibility, insufficient balance or a declined debit card, limits, an account restriction, or an outage. |
| A payment has not arrived | The recipient may need to tap Accept; the recipient may be ineligible, verification may be required, or a limit may apply. |
| Add Money fails | The card may not qualify, the issuer may have declined it, a card or Apple Cash limit may apply, or verification or security review may be required. |
| A transfer to a bank fails | Bank details or destination eligibility, software, limits, verification, or an account restriction may be involved. |
| Instant Transfer is delayed | The debit card may be ineligible, or processing or security checks may be taking longer than usual. |
| The Apple Cash card will not pay for a purchase | Check account status, whether the balance is available, Apple Pay or device setup, merchant acceptance, and any security restriction. |
| Wallet says Restricted, Locked, or In Review | This is an account-status issue, often involving identity or security checks, rather than a basic device problem. |
Check whether Apple Cash is down
Check Apple System Status before changing settings. Apple recommends checking for an outage or scheduled maintenance when Apple Cash is not working. A green status does not rule out a bank-card decline, account review, recipient issue, or problem isolated to your device.
Run the basic troubleshooting checks
- Confirm eligibility. Apple Cash is available in the United States, including Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Standard accounts are for U.S. residents age 18 or older; minors use Apple Cash Family set up by a family organizer. Your device must support Apple Cash and Apple Pay. See Apple Cash requirements.
- Update your software. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > General > Software Update. For Apple Watch, update through the Watch app or watchOS settings.
- Check your connection. Confirm Wi-Fi or cellular data works, then restart the device.
- Check your Apple Account. Go to Settings > [your name], then Settings > Messages > Send & Receive. Make sure iCloud and iMessage use the same Apple Account across the devices involved, and that two-factor authentication is enabled.
- Confirm Apple Cash is on. Go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Cash.
- Inspect the Wallet card. Open Apple Cash in Wallet and look for instructions or a status notice before trying the transaction again.
Apple’s general troubleshooting guidance also covers restarting, identity verification, recipient eligibility, limits, and contacting the bank when a debit-card-funded payment is declined: If you can’t send or receive money with Apple Cash.
Fix a payment that will not send
Complete identity verification if requested
On iPhone, go to Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay > Apple Cash > Verify Identity. If that option is not present, Apple says verification is already complete. Enter accurate information and follow the prompts; Apple may request verification again even if you previously completed it. See Apple’s identity-verification steps.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Check the recipient and the funding source
The recipient must meet Apple Cash requirements and use current iOS or watchOS software. Messages may show an eligibility error if the recipient does not qualify. Apple Cash uses your balance first; if it does not cover the payment, the remainder can be charged to a supported debit card in Wallet. If the error says the bank declined the payment, contact the bank or card issuer; Apple also recommends this for a debit-card-funded decline.
Check the applicable limit
For standard accounts, person-to-person payments have a $1 minimum, a $10,000 maximum per message, and a $10,000 send-and-receive maximum over a rolling seven-day period. Family and Tap to Cash limits differ; the full limit table appears below. A smaller amount may work if the attempted payment exceeds a limit.
Fix a payment that has not arrived
Accept it in Messages
If the recipient has manual acceptance turned on, they must open the Messages conversation and tap Accept. To choose the acceptance setting, go to Wallet > Apple Cash card > More (…) > Card Details, then select Manually Accept Payments or Automatically Accept Payments.

Check eligibility, verification, and expiration
Confirm the recipient is eligible, Apple Cash is enabled, and any requested identity verification is complete. If a payment is not accepted within seven days, it automatically returns to the sender. A payment sent to the wrong person can be canceled only while it is pending; once completed, it cannot be canceled through Apple Cash. Apple’s instructions for sending and receiving are at Send and receive money with Apple Cash.

Fix an Add Money failure
Add Money requires a supported U.S. debit card or eligible prepaid card that is already usable with Apple Pay in Wallet. Not all prepaid cards qualify, and the card issuer can impose its own balance or transaction limits. Identity verification may also be requested.
Apple’s published limits for a standard account are $10 minimum and up to $10,000 per transaction or in seven days. Apple Cash Family has a $2,000 maximum per transaction and in seven days. If the card is declined, contact its issuer rather than repeatedly retrying in Wallet.

Fix a transfer to a bank or debit card
Transfer to a U.S. bank account
- Open Wallet > Apple Cash > More (…) > Transfer to Bank.
- Enter the amount and choose 1–3 Business Days.
- If no account is listed, tap Add A Bank Account, then enter and confirm the U.S. routing and account numbers.
- Authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device passcode.
Bank transfers generally take one to three business days and have no fee. The standard maximum is $10,000 per transfer and $20,000 over seven days. If it fails, update iOS or iPadOS, verify that the destination is an eligible U.S. account, recheck the details, and review limits and verification notices. Incorrect bank details can send funds to the wrong account, and Apple warns they may not be recoverable; contact an Apple Cash Specialist if you may have entered the wrong information.
Use Instant Transfer to an eligible debit card
Instant Transfer requires an eligible U.S. debit card in Wallet. Apple says transfers typically arrive immediately but may take up to 30 minutes, and security checks can take longer. The fee is 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum. If the funds have not arrived after two hours, contact an Apple Cash Specialist. See Apple’s transfer instructions and timing.
Understand Restricted, Locked, and In Review
These statuses describe different account controls. Basic device troubleshooting will not remove a security hold. Apple’s guidance is at If your Apple Cash account is restricted or locked.

In Review
Apple says an account review can take up to two business days. Follow any instructions shown on the Apple Cash card; a review may delay transactions even after ordinary checks are complete.
Restricted
A restricted account cannot send or receive money or add money. You can generally still transfer the balance to a bank or make purchases with Apple Pay, subject to the account’s status.
Locked
A locked account cannot make purchases, send or receive money, add money, or transfer money to a bank. Do not keep retrying transactions or create another Apple Cash account. Follow the instructions on the card; if none appear, contact an Apple Cash Specialist through Green Dot Bank support.

Choose the right support contact
- Bank or card issuer: Contact it when a debit or prepaid card transaction is declined, or when the issuer’s own limits may apply.
- Apple Cash Specialist at Green Dot Bank: Contact support for a restricted or locked account without on-screen instructions, a transfer problem that remains after the applicable waiting period, or an identity-verification issue you cannot complete. Apple Cash support is available through Apple Support’s contact page.
- Apple device support: Use Apple support for device, software, Wallet, or Apple Pay setup problems that persist after the checks above. The Apple Support app is another contact route.
Never share your Apple Account password, verification codes, or full card details with an unsolicited caller or message. Apple Cash account restrictions and verification reviews are not resolved by switching to another payment app; if money is urgent, use another payment method already trusted by both parties.
