Apple Cash Family is a convenient way to send children a recurring allowance when your family already uses iPhone, Apple Wallet, and Family Sharing. It is not a standalone bank account, physical debit-card program, or chore-management app. A family organizer can create Apple Cash accounts for eligible children under 18, schedule payments, view activity, and control some account features.
Apple Cash is available only in the 50 United States, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Before relying on it, check your child’s age, device, account status, and the feature limits described below.

What Apple Cash Family is
Apple Cash Family lets a Family Sharing organizer establish an Apple Cash account for an eligible child or teenager. The child receives an Apple Cash card in Wallet and can use the balance with Apple Pay at participating stores, in apps, and online.

Apple Cash Family is provided through Apple’s partners, including Green Dot Bank. The family organizer owns and is responsible for the Family Accounts under the applicable terms, so this is not financial independence from the parent.
See Apple’s overview at Apple Cash and the governing Green Dot terms.
Apple Cash versus Apple Pay
Apple Cash is the stored-value account and digital card used to hold, send, and receive money. Apple Pay is the payment system used to spend Apple Cash or another card at supported merchants.
In other words, Apple Pay itself is not an allowance account. Your child spends an Apple Cash balance through Apple Pay.
Who can use Apple Cash Family?
| Age | What generally applies |
|---|---|
| Under 13 | May receive and spend money through the family account, but cannot independently load funds from a payment card, use Instant Transfer, enable Auto Reload, or schedule a recurring payment. |
| 13–17 | May have access to additional debit-card loading and transfer features when the card, account, and eligibility requirements are met. |
| 18+ | May request to take ownership of the linked account and graduate it to a standalone Apple Cash account. The transition is governed by the applicable terms and is not necessarily automatic at the exact moment of the birthday. |
The organizer must establish the family account while the child is under 18. Apple and Green Dot may require identity information or documentation and can decline, delay, or close an account if information cannot be verified.

Before you start: eligibility checklist
- You are the Family Sharing organizer.
- Your own Apple Cash account is active and in good standing.
- The child is under 18 and belongs to your Family Sharing group.
- The relevant Apple Accounts are signed in to iCloud.
- Two-factor authentication is enabled.
- The devices are set to the United States region.
- The child has a compatible Apple device with Wallet and the latest supported version of iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS.
- Any requested identity information can be provided accurately.
Apple’s current guidance says a family organizer can establish up to five Family Accounts, although additional limits may apply. Exact device compatibility depends on the device and operating-system version, so updating both devices is a sensible first step.
How to set up Apple Cash for a child
On the family organizer’s iPhone:
- Open Settings.
- Tap your name.
- Tap Family or Family Sharing, depending on the iOS interface.
- Select the child or teen.
- Tap Apple Cash.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
- Complete identity verification if Apple or Green Dot requests it.
After setup, account management is also available through the organizer’s Wallet and Family Sharing settings. Apple can change menu labels between iOS releases, so look for the child’s Apple Cash settings if the wording differs slightly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor Apple’s current setup guidance, see Apple Support.
How to create a recurring allowance
Once the child’s Apple Cash Family account is active:
- Open Wallet on the organizer’s iPhone.
- Tap the organizer’s Apple Cash card.
- Tap the More button.
- Tap Apple Cash Family.
- Select the child.
- Under Recurring Payments, tap Set up.
- Choose the amount, start date, frequency, and optional memo.
- Review the details and confirm.
The organizer or a family member over 13 can set up a recurring payment for a child. A child under 13 cannot schedule one independently.

Use the memo to make the arrangement clear—for example, “Weekly allowance,” “Friday allowance,” “School lunch,” or “Chores — week of August 17.” Apple Cash schedules payments; it does not provide a built-in chore checklist or automatically verify whether chores were completed.
How to pause or cancel an allowance
Recurring payments can be paused or canceled in Wallet. Under Green Dot’s terms, the request must be received by 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on the day before the next scheduled payment to stop that payment. Do not wait until the scheduled payment date.
Before confirming a recurring payment, verify the child, amount, frequency, start date, and memo. Review the schedule again if you change your allowance arrangement.
What children can do with the money
- Spend the Apple Cash balance with Apple Pay at participating stores, in apps, and online.
- Send and receive money through supported Apple Cash functions.
- View their balance and transaction information.
- In eligible circumstances, transfer money to an eligible debit card or bank account.
Features vary by age, account status, device, eligible card, transfer method, and security checks. Under-13 users cannot add a debit card to Wallet for Apple Cash, independently reload from a payment card, request Instant Transfer, enable Auto Reload, or schedule recurring payments.
What parents can see and control
The organizer and designated parents or legal guardians can generally view a child’s balance and transaction activity. Apple’s privacy information says this may include amounts, dates, the people or entities involved, and available transaction memo details.

- When you access your Visa Virtual eGift Card for the first time, you’ll need to register your name, address, phone number, and email address via activationspot.com. These details should also be used as your billing address for online purchases, as many merchants require address verification for purchase authorization.
- This Visa Virtual eGift Card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Visa Virtual eGift Cards are emailed active.
- Funds do not expire but your Visa Virtual eGift Card has a ‘valid thru’ date (9 years from date of purchase). If funds remain after this date has passed, please call the Toll Free number found on your Visa Virtual eGift Card for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout.
- This item is not eligible for refund, resale, or return. Available for sale within the United States only. Not available to residents of Puerto Rico, Hawaii, New Mexico, South Dakota, West Virginia and the US Virgin Islands.
Controls include:
- Transaction notifications.
- Viewing transaction history.
- Restricting whom the child can send money to.
- Locking the child’s Apple Cash account.
- Changing the child’s Apple Cash Family settings.
Important limitation: restricting outgoing transfers does not let parents approve every incoming transfer. Green Dot’s terms say the organizer cannot limit who may send peer-to-peer payments to a Family User. Explain payment scams and unwanted requests to your child, and review unexpected incoming money.
Use a strong device passcode, do not share Apple Account credentials, and lock the account promptly if the child’s device is lost. Also secure the Apple Account using Apple’s device and account-security tools; simply taking possession of the device does not resolve every account risk.
Limits and fees
| Activity | Published limit or fee |
|---|---|
| Family Account balance | Up to $4,000. |
| Peer-to-peer sending | $1–$2,000 per transaction; up to $2,000 in a rolling seven-day period. |
| Peer-to-peer receiving | $1–$2,000 per transaction; up to $2,000 in a rolling seven-day period. |
| Bank transfer | $1–$2,000 per transfer; up to $4,000 in a rolling seven-day period. |
| Adding money from a supported card | $10–$2,000 per transaction; up to $2,000 per week for a Family Account. |
| Instant Transfer | 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum, where available. |
There is no advertised monthly Apple Cash Family subscription on Apple’s cited product and support pages. That does not guarantee that every use is free: Instant Transfer may incur the fee above, and a bank or card issuer may impose its own charges or limits. Security reviews can also delay funds.
For current limits and eligibility details, check Apple’s Apple Cash limits page.
Common problems and fixes
The Apple Cash option does not appear
Confirm that the organizer’s Apple Cash account is active, you are using the Apple Account associated with Family Sharing, the child is under 18 and in the family group, both devices are updated, two-factor authentication is enabled, and the region is set to the United States.

The account says “Pending”
Check the same eligibility items and submit any requested identity information accurately. Apple or Green Dot may require additional documentation before approving the account.
The child cannot add a debit card
This may be expected for a child under 13. Debit-card loading and related transfer features generally require the user to be at least 13 and otherwise eligible.
A payment fails
Possible causes include an insufficient balance, a declined funding card, an ineligible recipient, a security review, a rolling seven-day limit, a locked or suspended account, or a recurring-payment cancellation made too late. Transactions may be delayed, declined, blocked, or canceled under the Green Dot terms.

What Apple Cash Family does not include
Apple Cash Family is a simple digital allowance tool, not a complete kids’ finance platform. The cited Apple materials do not describe:
- A physical Apple Cash Family debit card.
- Automatic chore verification or a chore checklist.
- Category-level merchant spending controls.
- Built-in savings goals, savings rewards, or investing tools.
- Broad availability outside the United States, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Apple Cash Family versus a dedicated kids’ money service
Apple Cash Family is the better fit when your family already uses Apple devices and wants scheduled payments without adding another app or a separate monthly subscription. It avoids ordering and replacing a dedicated physical card, but it also offers fewer specialized controls.
A service such as Greenlight is designed specifically for children’s money management. Its plans, as displayed on August 16, 2026, showed prices of $5.99 per month for Core, $10.98 for Max, $15.98 for Infinity, and $19.98 for Family Shield. Prices and plan names can change. Greenlight advertises features such as debit cards for up to five children, chores and allowance tools, savings features, notifications, and—on higher tiers—investing, protection, location sharing, and safety tools. Greenlight says it is a financial technology company and that banking services are provided through Community Federal Savings Bank, Member FDIC.
| Choose Apple Cash Family if you want… | Choose a dedicated service if you want… |
|---|---|
| iPhone and Wallet integration | Physical cards for children |
| A straightforward scheduled allowance | Chore-linked allowance features |
| No advertised monthly Apple Cash Family subscription | More structured savings and spending tools |
| Basic visibility and outgoing-transfer controls | Broader child-focused controls and financial features |
Bottom line
Apple Cash Family is a good choice for a U.S. family that already uses Family Sharing and wants to send a simple recurring allowance through iPhone. Set it up only after checking the child’s age and eligibility, and remember that it is not a physical debit card, chore system, or full set of merchant controls. For those features—and for more structured money management—a paid service such as Greenlight may be worth the subscription.
