Apple Card is not shutting down now. Apple and Chase announced on January 7, 2026, that Chase is expected to replace Goldman Sachs as the card’s issuer in approximately 24 months—roughly around January 2028, although no final completion date has been announced. Until official transition instructions say otherwise, cardholders should continue using the card and making payments normally.

What Apple announced

Goldman Sachs Bank USA currently issues and services Apple Card. Under the announced agreement, Chase will become the future issuer, while Apple Card will remain an Apple-branded product and Mastercard will remain its payment network. The transition is subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

Apple says Goldman Sachs will continue servicing the account until the change is complete. The published timeline is approximately 24 months—not a firm customer deadline of January 7, 2028, and not a requirement to cancel, reapply, or move money immediately.

What Apple Card users should do now

  • Keep using the card normally if it remains useful to you.
  • Continue making payments to the currently specified Goldman Sachs account.
  • Do not close the account solely because of the announcement. Closing a credit card can affect available credit and utilization, depending on your circumstances.
  • Watch for official notices in Wallet, email, and mailed correspondence.
  • Save statements and installment details before the eventual migration as a precaution.

Apple’s current FAQ says that no action is required from cardholders at this time. Do not submit a new Chase application merely because Chase will eventually issue Apple Card.

What should remain the same during the transition

Apple says users can continue using the Apple Card experience during the transition, including Wallet-based account management and current benefits. Apple currently advertises up to 3% unlimited Daily Cash, subject to the applicable terms. The January 7 announcement lists variable APRs from 17.49% to 27.74%, based on creditworthiness, as of January 1, 2026.

Those current terms are not a guarantee of Chase’s future pricing or rewards. Apple says the card has no fees, but interest can still apply when a balance is carried.

Apple Card Family is also part of the current product experience. Co-owners and participants should monitor their own communications because transition instructions could differ by account role. The statement that no action is currently required should not be generalized to accounts that are delinquent, suspended, charged off, or otherwise restricted.

What changes after Chase takes over

Once the transition occurs, Chase will be the issuing bank and Apple’s current FAQ says credit reports will update to show Chase as the issuer. Existing account balances are expected to be part of the program transition, but the available materials do not yet specify every operational detail, such as whether account numbers, payment instructions, statement dates, or digital credentials will change.

A change of issuer is not automatically the same as a new credit application by the customer. However, Apple has not published a complete explanation of how account age, payment history, credit limits, utilization, or any closed-and-reopened-account treatment will be reported. No one can responsibly promise that every cardholder’s credit score will rise, fall, or remain unchanged.

Important questions that are still unanswered

What happens to Apple Card Savings?

Apple Card Savings is currently provided by Goldman Sachs Bank USA. The card-issuer announcement and transition FAQ do not establish that existing Savings accounts will automatically move to Chase. Treat the Savings account as a separate issue, and do not assume that a savings balance will migrate with the credit-card account.

Apple has not yet published the final process for transferring, maintaining, or closing those accounts. Keep watching official communications rather than relying on social-media claims.

Will rewards change?

Apple says users can continue receiving the current Apple Card experience during the transition, including up to 3% Daily Cash. The announcement does not guarantee that every future reward category, merchant qualification, redemption method, or benefit will remain unchanged after Chase becomes issuer.

What happens to Apple Card Monthly Installments?

Apple Card Monthly Installments currently offer eligible U.S. customers a 0% APR payment option for qualifying Apple purchases, subject to credit approval, credit limit, and other restrictions. Apple says users can continue using the card during the transition, but it has not provided detailed post-transition rules for existing installment plans, purchases made before migration, or new installment eligibility after Chase takes over.

Do not assume that existing installment schedules, future eligibility, or retail-facing terms will remain identical until official notices explain them. Current program details are available through Apple Support.

Will the physical titanium card still work?

Mastercard will remain the payment network, and Apple says users can continue using Apple Card during the transition. Operational details about existing card numbers, expiration dates, replacement cards, and digital payment credentials have not yet been published.

What about disputes and fraud claims?

The available public FAQ does not provide a complete process for disputes, fraud claims, late payments, or account restrictions that span the migration date. Keep records of communications and transaction documents, and follow the institution’s official instructions when transition notices arrive.

Why Goldman Sachs is leaving

Goldman Sachs said the agreement substantially completes its effort to narrow its consumer-business focus. Its announcement describes the transition of the Apple Card program and associated accounts and discusses related accounting effects. Goldman will continue operating and servicing the program during the transition.

That explains the institutional change, but it does not by itself determine the future rewards, interest rates, credit limits, Savings arrangements, or servicing experience for individual cardholders.

Should you cancel Apple Card or switch now?

There is no universal reason to cancel the card before the transition. Users who value Apple Wallet integration, Daily Cash, Apple Card Family, or Apple-specific installment financing may prefer to keep the account and wait for Chase’s final terms.

Comparison-shopping may make sense if you want travel rewards, broader redemption options, a different issuer, wider web or Android access, a balance-transfer offer, or more predictable long-term terms. But do not treat a generic Chase card as a guaranteed replacement for Apple Card: the official announcement does not identify a replacement product or promise that another Chase card will preserve Apple Card benefits.

If you carry a balance, compare interest costs and fees before focusing on rewards. A headline cash-back rate can be outweighed by interest charges. If you primarily use Apple Card Savings, evaluate that account separately because its future relationship with the card has not been established.

What prospective applicants should know

Apple Card remains available to qualifying U.S. applicants while Goldman Sachs remains the issuer. Apple’s current application information and disclosures are available on Apple Support. Future Chase approval standards, APRs, credit limits, rewards, and application procedures have not been published.

Apple Card is currently a U.S.-only product. Apple Cash, where Daily Cash may be deposited, is a separate service provided by Green Dot Bank—not by Goldman Sachs or Chase.

Bottom line

The “24-month warning” is an issuer-transition notice, not an immediate cancellation notice. Apple Card is expected to move from Goldman Sachs to Chase in approximately 24 months, subject to approvals and closing conditions. For now, keep making payments, use the card normally if it suits you, and wait for official instructions about credit reporting, Savings, installments, rewards, and account-management details.
