Apple Card Is Moving From Goldman Sachs to Chase: What Cardholders Need to Know

Chase is officially set to become Apple Card’s issuer, but the transition is expected to take about 24 months. Here’s what cardholders know—and what they should still watch for.

JPMorgan Chase was reported as Apple’s preferred replacement for Goldman Sachs in July 2025. That is no longer just a rumor: Apple and Chase announced on January 7, 2026, that Chase will become Apple Card’s issuer. The change is expected to take approximately 24 months, so it is not an immediate handoff. Existing cardholders can continue using Apple Card during the transition.

What Apple and Chase announced

Apple and Chase confirmed that Chase will become the issuing bank for Apple Card. Goldman Sachs separately announced an agreement to transition the Apple Card program and associated accounts to Chase. Apple expects the transition to take approximately 24 months; it has not announced a specific completion date. Apple’s announcement and Goldman Sachs’ announcement describe an agreement and a process, not a switch completed on announcement day.

The “hot favorite” description came from a July 29, 2025 report that Apple had told Chase it was its preferred replacement and that talks were advanced. At that point, no final agreement had been signed; Barclays and Synchrony were also reported as possible candidates. That was the reported status then, not the current one. The July 2025 report predates the official announcement.

What changes—and what does not

An issuer is the bank behind the credit account. It handles functions such as lending, underwriting, account servicing, and regulatory obligations. Apple supplies the branded product and customer-facing Wallet experience; the payment network routes transactions between the card and merchants. Apple launched the card in 2019 with Goldman Sachs as issuer and Mastercard as network. Apple’s launch announcement explains that original arrangement.

These statements describe what Apple says will continue during the transition. They do not establish that every rate, policy, or feature will remain unchanged after Chase takes over.

What the announcement means for cardholders

There is no announced need to stop using the card now. Apple says customers can keep using Apple Card during the transition and that it will provide more information as the transition date approaches. For the moment, follow the existing payment and account instructions rather than anticipating a change that has not been announced.

Details to wait for

Apple and Chase had not specified an exact migration date, whether card numbers will change, or whether customers will receive a new cardholder agreement. Their announcements also do not settle future APRs, credit limits, underwriting or account-review practices, servicing procedures, or whether any dispute, refund, installment, or rewards rules will change after migration. Do not assume current terms are guaranteed indefinitely—or that they will change—without an official notice.

For Apple Card Family users, the companies had not detailed how co-owners and participants will be handled during account migration. Apple Card Monthly Installments are advertised as continuing during the transition, but the announcements do not explain every rule for existing installment balances versus future purchases. Keep receipts and relevant dispute correspondence, and read any account-specific instructions when they arrive.

Apple Card Savings is a separate question

Goldman Sachs describes the agreement as covering the Apple Card program and associated accounts. Apple’s announcement says users will continue to have access to Savings, while its disclosure identifies Goldman Sachs Bank USA as the provider. Those statements do not provide a complete operational timeline or explain whether, when, or how Savings accounts would move. Check the Apple Card transition information for official instructions rather than assuming Savings has already transferred.

Why Goldman Sachs is exiting

Apple Card was Goldman Sachs’ first major consumer credit-card program and became part of the bank’s broader retreat from consumer finance. Goldman said the transaction substantially completes the narrowing of its consumer-business focus. Its disclosed accounting effects were a $0.46 increase in fourth-quarter 2025 earnings per share, release of $2.48 billion in loan-loss reserves, a $2.26 billion reduction in net revenues related to portfolio markdowns and contract-termination obligations, and $38 million in expenses. These are Goldman’s stated financial effects—not the price Chase paid for Apple Card or a measure of the program’s total value. Goldman’s release provides the accounting details.

Why Chase may be a fit

Chase has an established U.S. credit-card operation and experience with co-branded card partnerships. That scale may help with lending, servicing, and card operations, while Apple can retain its customer-facing product and Mastercard network. Chase, in turn, gains a high-profile relationship with Apple’s customer ecosystem. These are plausible strategic reasons for the pairing, not terms or a rationale fully disclosed by the companies; the announcements do not publish a complete financial breakdown of the deal.

The program’s scale should also be described with dates. Apple said in January 2024 that it had more than 12 million cardholders and that users earned more than $1 billion in Daily Cash during 2023. Those are historical figures, not verified 2026 totals. They also measure different things: cardholders and rewards earned do not by themselves establish purchase volume, outstanding balances, issuer profit, or the program’s value to Apple or Chase. Apple’s January 2024 update gives the dated figures.

What Apple Card users can do now

  1. Keep using the current account normally. Apple says card use continues during the transition; make payments through the existing channels unless an official notice changes them.
  2. Watch official communications. Review notices from Apple and Goldman Sachs, and use the transition page for current instructions.
  3. Read any new agreement before accepting it. Check the effective date, payment instructions, account terms, and procedures for disputes or servicing.
  4. Keep useful records. Retain statements, receipts, installment details, and dispute correspondence while the transition is underway.
  5. Review account-specific instructions. Pay particular attention to autopay, Savings, Family accounts, installment plans, authorized users, card replacement, and credit reporting.
  6. Do not close the account solely because the issuer is changing. Closing a credit account can affect utilization and account-age calculations, but the effect varies by person. This is a general precaution, not a prediction that the transition will harm a credit score.

Apple Card is available to U.S. applicants subject to credit approval, and Apple’s January 7, 2026 announcement listed a variable APR of 17.49%–27.74% as of January 1, 2026. That dated range is not a promise of future terms under Chase. See Apple Card support and the Apple Card product page for current product information.
