Apple beat Samsung in Q1 2025, with the iPhone 16e helping—but not alone

Apple narrowly beat Samsung in global smartphone share in Q1 2025. The iPhone 16e likely helped, but Apple’s entire iPhone lineup, regional growth, timing, and methodology all matter.

Apple took the top global smartphone-vendor position in the first quarter of 2025, narrowly beating Samsung in Counterpoint’s reported data. Apple held 19% of global smartphone sales versus Samsung’s 18%, while Apple’s total smartphone volume rose about 4% year over year and Samsung’s fell about 5%.

The iPhone 16e likely helped Apple close the gap, especially in price-sensitive and emerging markets. But the evidence does not show that the 16e single-handedly caused the result: the figures cover Apple’s entire iPhone portfolio, not one model.

What Apple actually won

The comparison was between Apple and Samsung as global smartphone vendors—not between the iPhone 16e and Samsung’s Galaxy S25 range. The period was January through March 2025.

Counterpoint’s reported Q1 figures were:

Vendor Global share Year-over-year change
Apple 19% Approximately +4% in volume
Samsung 18% Approximately −5% in volume
Xiaomi Approximately 14% Up from 13% in Q1 2024

Source: Counterpoint data reported by PhoneArena.

This was described as Apple’s first-ever lead over Samsung in a first quarter. That wording matters. Apple often benefits from the holiday-quarter launch cycle, but Q1 is also important for Samsung because its annual flagship Galaxy S launch typically arrives early in the year. The milestone does not mean Apple had never led Samsung in any quarter, nor does it prove a permanent change in market leadership.

How much did the iPhone 16e contribute?

The iPhone 16e was a plausible contributor for three reasons:

  • It lowered Apple’s entry point. Buyers who wanted iOS and access to Apple’s ecosystem had a newer option below the company’s Pro-tier models.
  • It launched during the quarter. A fresh model can create retail, carrier, and upgrade momentum while older products are no longer the only choices.
  • It fit price-sensitive markets. Apple’s reported growth was strongest in Japan, India, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia—regions where a lower-priced iPhone could broaden the potential customer base.

However, Apple’s 19% share included the whole iPhone lineup, including the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. The available reporting does not provide a verified global unit figure for the iPhone 16e or isolate its contribution to Apple’s total.

The accurate conclusion is therefore that the iPhone 16e helped Apple’s Q1 performance or was a likely factor—not that it outsold Samsung’s Galaxy portfolio or single-handedly delivered the lead.

Regional growth tells a more complicated story

Apple’s result was not simply an American premium-phone victory. The reported pattern was flat or weaker performance in key markets including the United States, Europe, and China, alongside double-digit growth in Japan, India, the Middle East and Africa, and Southeast Asia.

That regional mix supports the idea that a lower-priced iPhone mattered. It also shows why Apple’s Q1 result should not be explained by assuming that demand surged everywhere. The data does not prove that the 16e generated all of the growth in those regions; existing iPhone models, carrier promotions, currency conditions, and local product cycles could also have contributed.

Why Samsung’s share declined

Samsung’s reported global share fell from 21% in Q1 2023 to 20% in Q1 2024 and 18% in Q1 2025. That is a meaningful deterioration at the vendor level, but it is not enough to declare the Galaxy S25 a failure.

  • apple iphone 16e; iphone 16e 128gb; apple smartphone; iphone eSIM; unlocked iphone

Several factors may have shaped the result:

  • The Galaxy S25 family competed with a newly launched lower-priced iPhone.
  • Samsung’s Galaxy A36 and A56 midrange models reportedly arrived later than the iPhone 16e, potentially giving Apple a temporary timing advantage in price-sensitive segments.
  • Samsung faced strong competition from Xiaomi, Vivo, Motorola, Honor, and Huawei in selected markets.
  • The vendor-level figures do not show whether weakness came from the S25 family, older Galaxy models, regional mix, retail inventory, or broader competitive pressure.

Vivo reportedly overtook Oppo in the ranking and grew about 6% in volume year over year. The “others” category also expanded, with Honor, Huawei, and Motorola cited as notable contributors. These figures come from the Counterpoint-reported table and should not be treated as an uncontested industry consensus.

Sales and shipments are not the same thing

The headline numbers need a methodological warning. Counterpoint’s reported 19% Apple share and 18% Samsung share were described in terms of global smartphone sales or sell-through. Sell-through generally refers to phones purchased by consumers.

IDC’s contemporaneous estimate used a different view of the market and reportedly showed worldwide smartphone growth of about 1.5%, compared with approximately 3% in Counterpoint’s data. IDC’s analysis was shipment-oriented and reportedly suggested that Apple increased shipments and may have built inventory ahead of possible U.S. tariffs.

  • Accessories will not be original, but will be compatible and fully functional. Product may come in generic Box.

A shipment is a phone moving into a distribution channel; a sell-through figure is intended to capture consumer purchases. Inventory can therefore make shipment growth look stronger before corresponding end-user demand appears. The two estimates are not automatically contradictory, but their percentages should not be blended as though they measured exactly the same thing. What tariffs and inventory may have changed

Tariff-related inventory decisions were part of the uncertainty surrounding the quarter. Companies and channel partners may move products earlier when they expect future import costs or supply disruption. That can affect shipment timing and reported inventory without proving that consumer demand permanently changed.

Contemporary coverage warned that tariffs and broader economic uncertainty could weigh on smartphone demand after Q1. Those were expectations at the time, not evidence that explains every part of Apple’s result or establishes what happened in later quarters.

Is Apple’s lead a lasting trend?

One quarter is not enough to establish durable market dominance. Apple’s ability to repeat the result depends on several factors:

  • Product-cycle timing: The 16e launch gave Apple fresh momentum in Q1. That effect may fade as the model ages.
  • Samsung’s midrange response: Later availability of the Galaxy A36 and A56 may have limited Samsung’s Q1 comparison. Their performance could change the balance in subsequent periods.
  • Regional demand: Apple needs continued growth outside its strongest established markets, particularly where Android vendors compete aggressively on price.
  • Portfolio breadth: Apple’s result came from its complete iPhone range, so the performance of the mainstream and Pro models remains important.
  • Macroeconomic conditions: Tariffs, currency movements, consumer confidence, and channel inventory can all alter quarterly rankings.

Apple’s Q1 lead is best understood as a historic quarterly milestone shaped by product timing, regional performance, and the combined strength of its lineup. It is not yet proof that the iPhone 16e permanently changed the global smartphone hierarchy.

What this means for buyers and investors

For buyers, Apple’s vendor ranking does not establish that the iPhone 16e is better than a Galaxy phone. A lower-priced iPhone may appeal to someone prioritizing iOS, Apple services, and ecosystem continuity. A Samsung buyer may instead value Android customization, Galaxy-device integration, or a wider range of price points.

For investors and market watchers, the more useful signal is Apple’s ability to grow in regions where it has historically faced stronger price competition. The unanswered question is whether that growth can continue after the launch effect and whether Samsung’s midrange portfolio can recover share.
