Apple announced on December 1, 2025, that John Giannandrea would step down as senior vice president of Machine Learning and AI Strategy, serve as an adviser, and retire in spring 2026. The announcement followed a delayed Siri upgrade and a prior reorganization that moved day-to-day Siri responsibility to Mike Rockwell under Craig Federighi’s software organization. Apple did not say the delays caused Giannandrea’s retirement.
What Apple officially announced
Apple’s announcement described a transition, not a dismissal. Giannandrea left his executive role, remained temporarily as an adviser, and was scheduled to retire in spring 2026. The company did not publish an exact final employment date or assign blame for Siri’s delays. Apple’s announcement also named Amar Subramanya as vice president of AI and gave Federighi broader responsibility for Apple’s AI work, including the effort to deliver a more personalized Siri.

- Federighi: senior software executive with expanded oversight of AI and personalized Siri.
Why Siri became the flashpoint
Apple had previously demonstrated a more personalized Siri within Apple Intelligence, including awareness of personal context and the ability to take actions across apps. On March 7, 2025, Apple acknowledged that some of those Siri improvements would take longer than expected and were expected in 2026. The delay applied to important Siri capabilities, not necessarily to every Apple Intelligence feature. Axios reported Apple’s delay statement, while Reuters’ account described the same timetable.
That mattered strategically because Siri is Apple’s consumer-facing route into its AI system. A late or unreliable assistant is visible to hundreds of millions of users, even when less visible machine-learning features continue shipping.

The management intervention came before the retirement
In March 2025, reports said Mike Rockwell, previously associated with Apple’s Vision Pro work, was assigned to lead Siri. Siri was moved into Federighi’s software organization, reducing its direct connection to Giannandrea’s AI group. Bloomberg Law’s report and Reuters’ account of that reporting said the move reflected internal concerns about product execution.
Those reports also said CEO Tim Cook had lost confidence in Giannandrea. That is a reported characterization, not an Apple statement. The confirmed sequence is narrower: Siri’s improvements were delayed, Siri’s reporting line changed, and Apple later announced Giannandrea’s planned retirement.

Apple’s post-Giannandrea Siri strategy
At WWDC26 on June 8, 2026, Apple introduced “Siri AI” for iOS 27 and related operating-system updates. Apple presented it as a substantially more capable system with more conversational interaction, natural-language editing and writing, awareness of information on the screen, Apple Intelligence integration, and a dedicated Siri app for revisiting conversations. The Apple Developer presentation demonstrates the announced experience, while Apple’s newsroom release describes the broader platform.
This was not simply proof that the delayed 2025 feature list had arrived unchanged. Apple’s 2026 presentation framed Siri AI as a new system and a broader rebuild. Reports in 2026 described a chatbot-style redesign, a Siri app, and an “Ask Siri” interface, but those details should be understood as reported plans unless Apple confirms a specific feature in release documentation.

Availability was still limited as of August 18, 2026
Apple said Siri AI was available for developer testing in June 2026 and that a consumer beta would come later in the year. That is different from a completed worldwide launch.
- Language support and compatible-device requirements apply.
- Apple said Siri AI would not initially be available on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in the European Union because of the Digital Markets Act. See Apple’s EU notice.
- Apple said China availability would be delayed while regulatory requirements were addressed.
- The June announcement did not establish a final public-release date or confirm identical features in every market.
What the change means for Apple investors and users
Accountability changed
Apple redistributed responsibility instead of leaving Siri solely within the former AI chief’s organization. Rockwell took operational control of Siri, Federighi gained broader product oversight, and Subramanya became the AI vice president.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Apple appears to favor a larger product reset
The organizational moves and the 2026 Siri AI presentation indicate a shift from trying to ship a delayed feature package toward a more extensive assistant redesign. That is an inference from the timeline and Apple’s presentation, not a statement that the company has solved its AI execution problems.
Trade-offs remain
- Central control versus specialization: Federighi’s oversight may improve software integration, while Rockwell provides a dedicated Siri operator; multiple layers can also complicate accountability.
- Privacy versus capability: Apple continues to emphasize protected personal data and on-device processing, while rivals often lean more heavily on cloud models.
- Apple models versus outside assistants: Reports suggested Apple was considering broader access to rival AI assistants. That could expand capability but raise questions about dependence, privacy, and platform control.
- Speed versus reliability: The delay may reflect quality control, execution problems, or both; the public record does not settle the internal cause.

The Bottom Line
Giannandrea’s retirement is confirmed, and it followed a period of delayed Siri features and an earlier transfer of Siri authority. Apple never publicly said the delays caused his departure. The company’s response was a management overhaul followed by a broader Siri AI redesign, but developer testing and regional restrictions meant the turnaround was not yet proven by August 18, 2026.
