Anupreeta Das’s Billionaire, Nerd, Savior, King: Bill Gates and His Quest to Shape Our World asks how Bill Gates came to be seen not only as Microsoft’s co-founder but also as a major philanthropist—and what those roles reveal about power, wealth, and public influence. In a September 14, 2024, GeekWire interview, Das describes the book as an inquiry into the man behind those familiar public identities.

What question does the book ask about Bill Gates?

Das’s central question, as she put it in the interview, is: “Who is the real Bill Gates?” The book examines how Gates’s public image shifted from that of a hard-driving technology executive toward the benevolent philanthropist, and how celebrity and charitable work can complicate criticism of a powerful figure. These are Das’s interpretations of his public persona, not findings about public opinion established by the interview.

The book’s full title is Billionaire, Nerd, Savior, King: Bill Gates and His Quest to Shape Our World. Das is identified by GeekWire as a New York Times journalist and South Asia correspondent. The interview was conducted by Ross Reynolds and published September 14, 2024.

Why did Anupreeta Das write the book?

Das told GeekWire that she began focusing on Gates after his 2021 divorce from Melinda French Gates brought questions about his fortune and the Gates Foundation into view. She also said Gates’s association with Jeffrey Epstein led her to ask who he was beyond the familiar roles of Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist.

That starting point makes the book an examination of public image and influence as well as biography: how a technology billionaire becomes a prominent philanthropic figure, and how people assess the power attached to both identities.

How does Das discuss Gates’s wealth and background?

Das challenges the idea of Gates as entirely self-made by pointing, in the interview, to his family’s connections and resources. She says his mother served on the University of Washington board and his father was a prominent lawyer and community leader. These details are presented here as Das’s account of Gates’s background, rather than as an independently verified assessment of how much those advantages shaped his career.

What does the book say about the Gates Foundation’s approach?

Das describes the foundation’s philanthropy as data-driven, with grantees asked to report metrics and assess programs. She argues that such requirements can consume time for nonprofit organizations. This is her interpretation and comparison, as conveyed in the interview; the article does not independently evaluate the foundation’s practices or their effects.

What is disputed about the book’s discussion of Epstein?

The interview discusses Gates’s association with Epstein and questions Das says remain unclear to her, including why Gates sought Epstein’s assistance and whether people around Gates advised him. These questions should not be mistaken for established conclusions about motives or events.

GeekWire also reported a statement from Gates’s representatives disputing the book’s sourcing and characterization. They said it relies almost exclusively on second- and third-hand hearsay and anonymous sources, and contains sensationalized allegations and falsehoods. The interview therefore presents a contested account; it does not independently resolve the dispute.

What should readers take from the interview?

The GeekWire conversation offers a description of Das’s project and its central concerns: Gates’s changing public image, the relationship between wealth and influence, and the role of philanthropy in shaping how a billionaire is regarded. It is not, on its own, a fact-check of the book or a comprehensive account of Gates’s public record. Readers looking for a balanced assessment of particular claims would need additional reporting beyond this interview.
