Anthropic Reportedly Discussed $2B Raise at $60B Valuation in 2025

Anthropic reportedly discussed a $2 billion raise at a $60 billion post-money valuation in January 2025, with Lightspeed expected to lead. The talks were not confirmation of a completed round, and later reported financing put the company at a far higher valuation.

In January 2025, Anthropic was reportedly in talks to raise $2 billion at a $60 billion post-money valuation, with Lightspeed Venture Partners expected to lead the round. The report described private negotiations—not a company announcement or confirmation that the round closed on those terms. The figure is now historical: by May 2026, Anthropic said it had raised $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation.

What was reported in January 2025?

The Information reported that Anthropic was discussing a $2 billion financing at a $60 billion post-investment valuation, citing a person with direct knowledge. Reuters, in a report syndicated by Investing.com, also described a proposed $2 billion round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners and attributed details to anonymous sources. The Information’s January 2025 report and Reuters’ account via Investing.com framed the financing as talks, not a completed deal.

That distinction matters: the reporting establishes what Anthropic was reportedly considering at the time, but does not establish that this particular $2 billion round closed at the stated valuation.

What does a $60 billion post-money valuation mean?

Post-money valuation is the company’s implied value after the planned investment is included. So the reported $60 billion was not a pre-money figure to which another $2 billion should be added. If the proposed investment and valuation had both been finalized as reported, the implied pre-money valuation would have been about $58 billion. That arithmetic is conditional on the reported terms; it is not evidence that the transaction closed.

How did the later financing change the picture?

On May 28, 2026, the Associated Press reported that Anthropic said it had raised $65 billion in private funding at a $965 billion valuation. AP also reported a $47 billion annualized revenue figure from the company. These are company-reported figures as relayed by AP, not independently audited financial statements. The later valuation makes clear why the January 2025 $60 billion figure should not be treated as current. Read AP’s May 28, 2026 report.

On June 1, 2026, Axios reported that Anthropic had filed confidentially for an IPO and summarized the preceding financing as a $65 billion Series H round at a $965 billion post-money valuation. A confidential filing is a later milestone in the company’s history; it does not change the status of the separate January 2025 report. Read Axios’ June 1, 2026 report.
