Anthropic announced on October 7, 2025, that Rahul Patil, formerly Stripe’s chief technology officer, had joined as Anthropic’s CTO. The company said Patil would oversee engineering across product, compute, infrastructure, inference, data science and security. Co-founder Sam McCandlish, who had been CTO, moved into the Chief Architect role.
Who is Anthropic’s new CTO?
Rahul Patil most recently served as Stripe’s CTO before joining Anthropic, according to Anthropic’s announcement. Anthropic described him as having more than 20 years of experience building and maintaining business infrastructure, and said he previously held senior engineering leadership roles at AWS, Microsoft and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. Those career details and the experience figure come from Anthropic.
When did Rahul Patil join Anthropic?
Anthropic dated its appointment announcement October 7, 2025. TechCrunch had reported the hire on October 2, five days earlier. The dates refer to different events: TechCrunch’s independent report preceded Anthropic’s public announcement.
Patil said in Anthropic’s announcement: “I’m thrilled to join Anthropic at this pivotal moment in AI development.”

What will Anthropic’s CTO oversee?
Anthropic said Patil would lead engineering across six areas:
- Product
- Compute
- Infrastructure
- Inference
- Data science
- Security
The company framed the appointment in the context of scaling Claude for enterprise demand. Daniela Amodei, Anthropic’s co-founder and president, said the company had grown to serve “over 300,000 business customers.” That is Anthropic’s figure as stated on October 7, 2025, not an independently audited count.

What changed for Sam McCandlish?
Anthropic co-founder Sam McCandlish moved from CTO to Chief Architect. The company said he would continue focusing on pretraining and also take on research productivity and reinforcement-learning infrastructure.
TechCrunch separately reported that the change brought product engineering closer to infrastructure and inference teams, and that Patil and McCandlish would report to Anthropic president Daniela Amodei. That organizational detail is TechCrunch’s reporting.

Why the appointment matters
The announcement puts one engineering leader over both product and core technical systems, including the infrastructure used to run AI models. At the same time, McCandlish’s new title preserves a defined role in pretraining and research infrastructure. The stated division is therefore between a broad engineering remit for Patil and research-architecture responsibilities for McCandlish; the announcement does not provide further reporting-line or operational detail.
