The traditional anniversary gift depends on the number of years married: paper for the first anniversary, cotton for the second, leather for the third, wood for the fifth, silver for the 25th, gold for the 50th and diamond for the 60th. However, there is no single universally official anniversary-gift list. Different U.S. and regional sources mix classic materials, modern alternatives, gemstones, flowers, colors and commercial annual themes.
This guide separates those traditions so you can choose a gift that fits the recipient, your budget and your values—not just buy the first literal object associated with a year.
Why anniversary gift lists disagree
Anniversary themes come from several overlapping traditions rather than one global standard:

Emily Post explains that its 1922 source listed a shorter set of major anniversary occasions and that the American National Retail Jeweler Association expanded much of the familiar list in 1937. The Emily Post guide treats the themes as a starting point, not a requirement. Emily Post’s historical and etiquette explanation is a useful reference.
The deeper origin is less certain. Accounts variously point to ancient Rome, medieval Germany or the Victorian era, but the evidence for a continuous, complete ancient year-by-year system is limited. It is more accurate to say that the practice became formalized and popularized in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries than to claim that the Romans invented the complete modern list. TIME’s historical overview discusses that uncertainty.

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Paper | Clocks | A handwritten letter, framed vows, custom map, tickets, photo book or a clock engraved with the wedding date. |
| 2 | Cotton | China | Robes, bedding, a quilt, canvas artwork, a picnic blanket or a useful china piece. |
| 3 | Leather | Crystal or glass | A wallet, bag, journal cover, belt or watch strap; choose vegan leather if preferred. |
| 4 | Fruit or flowers | Appliances | A flower subscription, fruit basket, botanical print, fruit tree or cooking class. Linen and other materials appear in alternate lists. |
| 5 | Wood | Silverware | A carved box, cutting board, wooden watch, planter or furniture chosen together. |
| 6 | Iron; some lists add candy | Wood objects | Cast-iron cookware, a metal sculpture, gardenwork or a confectionery tasting. Candy is a later commercial variation, while iron is the classic Emily Post entry. |
| 7 | Wool or copper | Desk sets | A wool blanket, cashmere accessory, copper barware or a personalized desk object. |
| 8 | Bronze or pottery | Linen or lace | Handmade pottery, a vase, bronze artwork, quality linens or a ceramics class. Lists often rearrange these materials. |
| 9 | Willow or pottery | Leather | A basket, woven storage, pottery, willow furniture or a leather-bound book. Pottery is also frequently listed for year 8. |
| 10 | Tin or aluminum | Diamond jewelry | A personalized metal print, aluminum luggage tag, tin keepsake box or diamond jewelry if it suits the recipient and budget. |
| 11 | Steel | Fashion jewelry | Stainless-steel cookware, a steel watch or an architectural object. Fashion jewelry is a broad modern category, not necessarily fine jewelry. |
| 12 | Silk or linen | Pearl | A silk robe, linen bedding, tailored clothing, table linens or pearl jewelry. Jade is also commonly associated with this year as a gemstone. |
| 13 | Lace | Textiles or faux fur | Lace detail in clothing, framed lacework, textile art or a faux-fur accessory. Real fur is not required by the theme. |
| 14 | Ivory in legacy lists | Gold jewelry | Use ivory as a color, an elephant motif or an ivory-colored alternative. Do not buy new elephant ivory. |
| 15 | Crystal | Watches | Crystal glassware, a prism, crystal artwork or a watch chosen for the recipient’s style. |
| 16 | Wax | Silver holloware or serving pieces | Candles, beeswax goods or a candle-making class; holloware means silver serving pieces such as bowls, trays or gravy boats. |
| 17 | Furniture | Furniture | Choose a chair, bench, side table, lamp or bedroom upgrade together. Furniture is rarely a good surprise purchase. |
| 18 | Porcelain | Porcelain | A handmade porcelain vase, tea set, dinnerware or porcelain artwork. Consumer lists sometimes use china and porcelain interchangeably, although they are not technically identical. |
| 19 | Bronze | Bronze | A sculpture, desk object, hardware upgrade or bronze-colored keepsake. |
| 20 | China | Platinum | Heirloom-quality tableware, porcelain art, platinum jewelry, a watch or a shared experience paired with a small china object. |
Important variations in the first 20 years
- Year 4: Fruit or flowers is a common U.S. traditional entry, but linen, silk and other alternatives appear in regional and commercial lists.
- Years 6–9: Iron, candy, copper, wool, bronze, pottery, willow, linen, lace and leather are frequently rearranged between sources. There is no need to resolve the disagreement before choosing a gift.
- Year 12: Silk or linen is the material convention; pearl and jade belong to separate jewelry associations that are often displayed alongside it.
- Year 14: Ivory is a legacy label, not a recommendation to purchase elephant ivory. See the ethical guidance below.
- Year 16: Wax is the classic category. Silver holloware is more specific than ordinary silverware and refers to serving pieces.
Anniversary themes for years 21–60
There is no universally accepted traditional material for every anniversary after 20. The following is Hallmark’s annual-theme list, which supplies a creative prompt for each year from 21 through 60. Hallmark’s list is useful for idea generation, but it should not be mistaken for a universal authority or a single historical tradition. See Hallmark’s complete list.

| 50 | Gold | Gold jewelry, a gold frame, a family-funded trip, vow-renewal ceremony or multigenerational gathering. |
| 51 | Photos or cameras | A photo archive, professional portrait session, digital frame or camera the recipient has selected. |

| 60 | Diamond | Diamond jewelry if desired, a lab-grown or diamond-like alternative, a family history project or a major shared experience. |
Which anniversaries are major milestones?
The most commonly emphasized U.S. milestones are the 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 35th, 40th, 45th, 50th, 55th and 60th anniversaries. The Knot describes the first anniversary and five-year increments through 30 as especially notable, followed by larger ten-year milestones. That is a social convention—not a formal requirement to spend more or celebrate in a particular way. The Knot’s milestone guide provides one commonly used U.S. framework.
For a milestone, the gift does not have to be expensive. A well-written letter, family photo archive, planned trip, donated experience or carefully chosen everyday item can carry more meaning than a costly object that does not fit the recipient.
Diamond anniversaries: 60th and 75th
The 60th anniversary is the diamond anniversary most commonly recognized today, but the 75th anniversary is also associated with diamond. Hallmark’s corporate history explains that the 60th designation became prominent after Queen Victoria’s 1897 Diamond Jubilee, while 75th was the earlier diamond designation. Hallmark’s history of anniversary traditions documents both.

Lists for the 65th, 70th, 75th, 80th, 90th and 100th anniversaries vary substantially. If you use a theme after the 60th, identify the source rather than presenting it as a universal standard.
Gemstones are a separate anniversary tradition
A gemstone list should not be mixed into the traditional-material table as if it were another official column. It is a parallel jewelry convention. Jewelers of America’s anniversary list offers the following jewelry-focused sequence, while the International Gem Society notes that no official anniversary-gemstone list equivalent to the standardized birthstone system exists. Competing lists are therefore normal.

Jewelry buyer checklist
Before buying an anniversary gemstone or diamond, ask specific questions rather than relying on the name of the stone alone:
- What is it? Confirm whether the stone is natural, lab-created, treated or imitation.
- What treatments has it received? Ask for treatment information in writing. Treatments can affect care requirements, permanence and value. Jewelers of America’s gemstone guide explains disclosure issues.
- How durable is it? Pearls, opals, emeralds and some other stones need more protection and care than sapphire, ruby or diamond. A fragile stone may be better in earrings, a pendant or a protective setting than in a ring worn every day.
- For a significant diamond purchase, is there an independent report? Request a grading report, check the report number and review the report details. GIA’s diamond buyer guidance explains what reports do and do not establish.
- What are the return, resizing and care policies? Include these costs and conditions in the purchase decision, especially for an online or custom order.
Lab-grown diamonds can be a way to follow a diamond theme at a different price point, but the seller should clearly identify what is being sold. A diamond simulant is not a lab-grown diamond, and neither should be described simply as a natural diamond.
How to turn a theme into a good gift
There are three sensible ways to interpret any anniversary theme:
- Literal: buy an object made from or directly associated with the material, such as a wooden keepsake for year 5.
- Symbolic: connect the idea to its meaning or appearance, such as planting a tree for a wood anniversary or choosing a sapphire-blue travel accessory.
- Experience-based: use the theme as a prompt for time together. Paper can become tickets and a printed itinerary; music can become concert tickets; travel can become a weekend away; charity can become a donation or volunteer day.
For unusual themes such as fire, air, luck, laughter, day or night, a symbolic or experience-based gift is usually more natural than searching for a literal product.
Start with the recipient, not the list
Use this priority order:
- Taste and lifestyle: What would the person actually wear, display, read, cook with or experience?
- Budget: Set a spending limit before browsing. Anniversary traditions do not require the gift to become more expensive with each passing year.
- Theme: Choose traditional, modern, jewelry, color, flower, Hallmark theme or a personal interpretation.
- Personalization: Add an inscription, shared date, location, photograph, private joke or story.
- Symbolism: Explain in a note why the gift connects to the year.
A useful gift that subtly reflects the theme is better than a technically correct item the recipient will never use.
Budget ideas
These are planning bands, not market averages or spending rules:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Under $25: a letter, card, flowers, small plant, favorite candy, printed photograph, modest keepsake or homemade meal.
- $25–$100: a personalized home item, book, textile, dinner, class, framed art or quality small accessory.
- $100–$500: jewelry, luggage, a furniture contribution, a professional photo session, a weekend activity or a substantial shared experience.
- Higher budgets: major jewelry, travel, a vow-renewal event, a family-funded celebration or a carefully selected heirloom.
Do not create debt to satisfy a gift list. If the purchase involves jewelry, furniture, travel or an appliance, account for related costs such as resizing, delivery, maintenance, insurance, tickets, lodging and taxes before deciding what fits the budget.
When the modern gift is an appliance, tool or piece of furniture
Home goods can be excellent anniversary gifts when they are wanted. They can also feel like household chores disguised as romance. Before buying an appliance, tool, desk item, furniture or home-improvement project, confirm:
- the recipient actually wants it;
- the style, size, color and features have been agreed upon;
- it is an upgrade rather than an assignment of additional labor;
- there is room for it and a realistic plan for maintenance;
- the return, delivery and warranty terms are acceptable.
For a shared item, surprise the recipient with the plan or experience—not necessarily with an unapproved object.

Year 14: ivory
Ivory appears in legacy anniversary lists, but it should be treated as a historical color or motif rather than a shopping instruction. The Knot recommends elephant-themed gifts or the ivory color instead of actual ivory. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service explains that international commercial ivory trade is prohibited under CITES and that U.S. commercial restrictions are extensive, with narrow exceptions and documentation requirements.

A memory book of your own journey.
Safer choices include: ivory-colored clothing or décor, an elephant illustration, a conservation donation, a vintage-looking synthetic object or a gift in the modern gold-jewelry category. Do not buy new elephant ivory.
Year 35: coral
Coral is another theme where a literal purchase can create environmental harm. NOAA advises consumers not to buy coral jewelry or décor because coral grows slowly, harvesting damages populations and coral beds may not recover after removal. NOAA identifies carefully managed Hawaiian black coral as a specific U.S. exception, but ordinary coral shopping is not a safe default. Read NOAA’s coral-jewelry guidance before considering any coral product.
Better alternatives include coral-colored flowers, clothing or décor; recycled or synthetic coral-look objects; reef artwork; a marine-life experience; or a donation to coral conservation.
Other animal-derived materials
Leather, wool, silk, feathers, fur and pearls can be appropriate for some recipients and unacceptable to others. If the recipient avoids animal-derived materials, consider vegan leather, recycled or plant-based textiles, faux fur, synthetic materials, secondhand items with clear provenance, or an experience instead. Do not assume that one ethical choice fits every buyer; ask what matters to the recipient.

For a spouse or partner
Prioritize personal meaning over the label. A paper anniversary could be a handwritten account of the first year; a gold anniversary could be a family trip rather than gold jewelry. Include a note that makes the connection explicit if the object itself is subtle.
For parents or grandparents
Memory-based gifts often work well: a professionally printed photo book, family-history project, recorded interviews, a restored heirloom, a planned gathering or contributions toward an experience. Confirm accessibility, travel ability, dietary needs and storage space before purchasing an experience or physical item.
For friends or relatives
A modest, useful gift is enough: flowers, a card, a framed photograph, a meal, a small themed object or a donation in the couple’s name. You do not need to match the scale of a spouse’s gift.
For a couple hosting an anniversary party
Consider a card, flowers, a modest keepsake, a framed photo or a small host gift. Do not assume that a party creates a registry or a gift obligation. Guests may give something if they wish, but attendance itself does not require a present.
For couples who prefer no physical gifts
Choose an experience, a meal, a planned day together, a charitable donation, a service that reduces a burden or a letter. Abstract themes such as travel, music, laughter, charity, day and night are especially easy to use without adding clutter.
Anniversary gift etiquette and special situations
Are friends and guests expected to bring a gift?
No. Emily Post says guests are not obligated to bring gifts to an anniversary party, and an anniversary party should not be treated like a shower or registry event. Emily Post’s registry and party guidance supports treating the occasion as a celebration rather than a gift solicitation.

Dating anniversaries, remarriages and vow renewals
Traditional anniversary tables generally refer to years married. Couples celebrating the date they began dating can borrow the themes creatively, but the standard list does not formally cover dating anniversaries.
Recommended Free Tools
The same themes may also be used for a current marriage anniversary, vow-renewal date, blended-family celebration or remembrance occasion. Name the occasion accurately and choose the symbolism that feels meaningful; no list determines which relationships deserve recognition.
A five-step decision framework
- Identify the year. Confirm whether you are celebrating years married, a dating milestone, a vow renewal or another date.
- Choose the type of list. Decide among classic material, modern alternative, jewelry association, flower or color, Hallmark annual theme or a personal theme.
- Set the budget. Choose an amount that can be paid comfortably. The tradition does not require a fixed price or a larger gift every year.
- Check fit and consequences. Consider taste, lifestyle, ethical concerns, durability, storage, maintenance, delivery, return policies and any ongoing expense.
- Personalize the connection. Add a story, inscription, photograph, date, shared activity or handwritten explanation. The theme should support the gift, not dictate it.
Formula: Choose the year → choose traditional, modern, gemstone or theme → match the recipient → personalize it → reject any option that conflicts with budget, ethics or taste.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there one official anniversary gift list?
No. Traditional-material lists, modern alternatives, jewelry-industry gemstone lists and commercial annual-theme lists overlap but are not identical. This guide uses a U.S.-oriented baseline and identifies Hallmark’s years 21–60 list as a Hallmark list rather than a universal standard.
Is the 60th or 75th anniversary the diamond anniversary?
Both are associated with diamond. The 60th is the diamond anniversary most commonly recognized today, while the 75th was the earlier diamond designation. Later anniversary names vary by source.
What if the traditional material is impractical, unethical or unwanted?
Use a symbolic interpretation, an experience, a color or a modern alternative. For example, interpret year 14 ivory as an ivory color or elephant motif, and year 35 coral as coral-colored art or a reef-conservation donation. The recipient’s preferences and your budget matter more than literal compliance.
Do guests have to bring a gift to an anniversary party?
No. Guests are not obligated to bring gifts to an anniversary party. A card, flowers or a modest keepsake is optional, and the event should not be treated like a shower or registry occasion.
The Bottom Line
The best anniversary gift is not necessarily the most literal or expensive one. Use the year’s material, modern alternative, gemstone or theme as a starting point, then choose something the recipient will genuinely enjoy and can comfortably afford. A thoughtful explanation, personalization or shared experience can make a modest gift feel more significant than an unsuitable luxury purchase.
