Whether work pressure caused Anna Sebastian Perayil’s death has not been established in the contemporaneous reports available here. Her mother alleged that excessive hours and workload harmed her health; EY disputed that account. Government and labour authorities opened inquiries and scrutiny in September 2024, but those actions were not final findings on the cause of her death.
Who was Anna Sebastian Perayil?
Perayil was a 26-year-old chartered accountant employed by S R Batliboi, an EY Global member firm, in Pune, Maharashtra. EY’s statement, quoted in The Indian Express on September 19, 2024, said she joined its Assurance team in Pune on March 18, 2024.
She died on July 20, 2024, while receiving treatment at a city hospital, according to that report. It said she had felt uneasy and complained of exhaustion before being admitted.
What did her mother allege, and how did EY respond?
In a letter describing her daughter’s experience, Perayil’s mother alleged that long hours and excessive workload had taken a toll on her physical, emotional and mental health. The allegation was her account of the circumstances; the reports do not establish it as a medical or legal finding about the cause of death.

Did an investigation establish that workload caused her death?
The reports cited above document allegations, EY’s denial and official scrutiny, but do not provide a final investigation result establishing that workload caused Perayil’s death. They also do not establish a medical cause of death, legal liability, or verified corrective action. Accordingly, the careful answer is that her mother attributed the death to work pressure, EY disputed that claim, and the available reporting does not settle it.
