The figures track malware packages, security-product alerts and vendor-observed activity—not a single tally of people whose bank accounts were compromised. For phone users, the practical response is to treat unexpected banking prompts, suspicious utility apps and unexplained Accessibility requests as reasons to stop and verify.
What the latest figures show—and what they count
Several security reports point to substantial Android banking-trojan activity, but their measures are not interchangeable. A detected installation package is not necessarily a successful infection, a fraudulent transaction or a unique victim.

These datasets use different definitions and collection methods. They should not be added together or presented as a global infection rate.
How Android banking malware can take over a banking session
It may arrive disguised as an ordinary app
A malicious download may pose as a file manager, PDF reader, phone cleaner or browser. It can seem harmless at first, then gain or activate harmful functions through a hidden update. Kaspersky says banker trojans commonly arrive through messaging apps and malicious webpages; official app stores reduce some risks but do not eliminate them. UK warning Kaspersky, 2026

It can imitate the bank while the real app is open
Some malware overlays a fake login screen on top of a legitimate banking app to capture information. Other deceptive screens may claim the app is “busy” or ask the user to wait while activity is concealed. Malware may also interfere with attempts to exit the app or restart the phone.
Accessibility access can give malware more control
Android’s Accessibility features support people who need assistance using a device, but broad access can also let a malicious app observe or interact with on-screen activity. A generic utility that asks for this access without a clear, relevant reason deserves particular scrutiny. Do not grant it merely to dismiss a prompt.

Warning signs that call for a pause
- Your banking app unexpectedly asks you to sign in again during a session.
- A banking screen becomes unresponsive or displays a “busy” or waiting message you did not expect.
- A file manager, cleaner, PDF reader or other generic utility requests access that seems unrelated to its purpose.
- A browser installation or update prompt appears unexpectedly, especially after following a message link or visiting a webpage.
- An app asks for Accessibility access and you cannot explain why it needs that capability.
Any one sign can have an innocent explanation, but do not enter credentials, approve access or follow the prompt until you have verified what is happening through a trusted route.
What to do if a prompt or app seems suspicious
- Stop interacting with the prompt. Do not enter banking details, grant unexplained permissions or install an app from a link you did not independently verify.
- Contact your bank using a trusted channel. Use the number on your bank card or its official website or app—not contact details supplied in the suspicious message or screen. Tell the bank about the prompt and any activity you do not recognize.
- Review the app and its access. Check which app triggered the request and whether it has permissions, especially Accessibility access, that do not match its purpose. If you cannot confidently identify or remove a suspicious app, ask your bank or a reputable device-support provider for help.
- Check account activity and follow the bank’s instructions. Report any unfamiliar transaction promptly and use the bank’s guidance for protecting access to your account.
Reduce risk with several layers
- Install apps from trusted sources, and review the developer details and ratings before downloading. A familiar-looking name or an app-store listing is not proof that an app is safe.
- Keep Android and your apps updated so you receive available security fixes.
- Consider permission requests carefully. Accessibility access should make sense for the app’s function; decline requests that do not.
- Be cautious with links and download or update prompts received through messages or webpages. Verify through the app store or the developer’s trusted channel instead.
- A reputable security product may help detect or block malicious activity, but it cannot guarantee safety or replace contacting your bank about suspicious activity.

How to interpret the trend
The evidence supports heightened concern: Kaspersky reported an annual increase in 2025, its Q1 2026 package count rose from the prior quarter, and Zimperium reported increases in vendor-tracked activity. But Kaspersky’s Q2 2026 package count was lower than Q1. That quarterly fall does not erase the earlier increases, nor does it establish that individual users are now safer. Vendor detections, package counts, estimated people at risk and observed financial transactions describe different things.
