The firm behind the headline is Andreessen Horowitz, commonly known as a16z. On January 9, 2026, it announced that it had raised more than $15 billion across six venture strategies. Its largest stated allocation is $6.75 billion for Growth. The announcement describes where the firm plans to invest; it does not establish how those investments will perform.

How much did Andreessen Horowitz raise?

Co-founder and general partner Ben Horowitz announced that a16z raised over $15 billion. The six listed allocations total $15.026 billion. Horowitz also said the raise represented more than 18% of all venture-capital dollars allocated in the United States in 2025; that percentage is his and the firm’s claim, and the announcement does not provide the underlying market dataset for independent recalculation. Read the firm’s announcement.

Where will the money go?

The announcement lists these allocations:

Strategy Announced allocation
Growth $6.75 billion
Apps $1.7 billion
Bio + Health $700 million
Infrastructure $1.7 billion
American Dynamism $1.176 billion
Other venture strategies $3 billion

Growth is the biggest named pool, followed by the $3 billion for other venture strategies. The announcement does not break that final category down further.

What does a16z say it intends to back?

The firm’s stated ambition is to help the United States win the next century of technology. Horowitz wrote, “Our mission is ensuring that America wins the next 100 years of technology.” The announcement points to AI and crypto as important technology architectures, with applications in biology, health, defense, public safety, education and entertainment, as well as government adoption. These are the firm’s priorities and rationale, not evidence that the investments will achieve those results.

Horowitz also described a16z as “the American leader in Venture Capital” and wrote that the fate of new technology in the United States rests partly on the firm’s shoulders. “American leader” is the firm’s own characterization, rather than an independent ranking.

What does the raise say about a16z’s size?

TechCrunch reported on January 9, 2026, that the raise put a16z’s assets under management above $90 billion and placed it near Sequoia among the world’s largest venture firms. That AUM figure and peer comparison are TechCrunch’s reported context, not figures in the firm’s announcement or a definitive ranking. A fair size comparison would need the same reporting date and AUM definition for each firm, as well as comparable fundraising periods and strategy mixes. AUM alone also does not show how much cash a fund has returned to its investors. Read TechCrunch’s report.

What the $15 billion figure does—and does not—tell investors

The announcement makes the scale and intended allocation of the fundraising clear, but it is not a performance report. It does not, by itself, show how the funds will perform, what returns investors may receive, or whether a16z is the world’s largest venture firm. The reported 18% share should likewise be read as Horowitz’s claim about U.S. venture-capital allocations in 2025, not as an independently verified market statistic.
