Vantage did not outpace NGD in a prolonged contest between independent data-center companies: it acquired Next Generation Data (NGD) in 2020. The acquisition folded NGD’s South Wales campus and team into Vantage’s European operation. Vantage’s later growth shows how the company expanded its capacity and financing, but its published totals combine existing and planned sites rather than measuring only operating data centers.
What happened to NGD?
Vantage Data Centers announced that it closed its acquisition of UK-based Next Generation Data on July 27, 2020, buying the company from InfraVia and NGD’s two founders. Vantage said the NGD team joined Vantage Europe; former NGD CEO Justin Jenkins became COO of Vantage Europe and president of Vantage UK. The companies did not disclose the transaction’s financial terms. Vantage’s acquisition announcement described Cardiff as its sixth European market after earlier expansion.
The South Wales campus had 180 MW of total capacity in Vantage’s announcement: 72 MW in an existing facility and 108 MW of expansion capacity. Vantage called it Europe’s largest data-center campus at the time. The distinction between existing and expansion capacity matters: the full 180 MW was not described as already operational. The acquisition put NGD’s campus inside Vantage’s platform; it did not establish a continuing head-to-head race between the two companies.
How Vantage’s footprint grew after the acquisition
Vantage’s January 2025 company announcement reported more than $13 billion in new debt and equity investment during 2024 and 11 data centers opened that year. At year end, it reported more than 2.6 GW of planned and existing capacity across 35 campuses, 14 countries, and 21 markets. These are Vantage-reported figures, and the capacity total explicitly includes sites that were still planned or under development. It should not be read as 2.6 GW of operating capacity. Vantage’s 2024 results announcement gives the company’s figures.

- Save valuable floor space: 6U wall mount server cabinet Dimensions: 13.78" H x21.65" W x17.72" D.Maximum mounting depth is 14.2"
- Keep critical network equipment secure: glass door and side panels are lockable to prevent unauthorized access. Front door can be installed on either side of the front of the cabinet to satisfy your door swing orientation preference
- Easy equipment configuration: Fully adjustable mounting rails and numbered U positions, with square holes for easy equipment mounting with top and bottom punch-out panels for easy cable access
- Durability: Made of high quality cold rolled steel holds up to 110lb (50kg) (Easy Assembly Required)
- PCI & HIPPA and EIA/ECA-310-E compliant
The numbers indicate a larger platform and substantial access to capital, but they do not isolate how much growth came from the NGD acquisition, how much capacity was operational, or how Vantage compared with NGD as a separate company after the deal. Campus counts, capacity, and financing describe different things; none alone proves how quickly usable capacity reached customers.
Why power-ready capacity matters in the AI data-center race
In July 2025, Vantage announced its entry into Nevada with a planned 224 MW campus and nearly $3 billion in investment. The company said the first two buildings were fully leased and scheduled the first building to open in the second quarter of 2026. It described support for traditional air-cooled workloads and GPU workloads using liquid cooling, with N+1 electrical redundancy and N+2 mechanical redundancy. Those are the project’s announced plans and specifications, not independent confirmation that the campus opened or that the stated capacity is now available. Vantage’s Nevada announcement provides those details.

These specifications point to a key constraint in the race: a site announcement is not the same as power-connected, commissioned capacity that a customer can use. Cooling design and backup systems matter for high-density computing, but the project’s schedule also depends on delivery and infrastructure. Vantage’s announcement said the first two buildings were leased, which signals customer commitments; it does not mean the campus was already operating.
What the wider market data says—and does not say
CBRE reported 7,481 MW of data-center capacity under construction across eight primary North American markets in the first half of 2026, up 24.8%. More than 80% of that capacity was preleased, while less than 1,500 MW was available for pre-leasing. CBRE also said power constraints were extending completion timelines. These figures describe the specified North American markets, not Vantage alone, South Wales, or the global market. CBRE’s H1 2026 market update provides the snapshot.

The figures help explain why planned megawatts and announced investment cannot be treated as a simple scorecard. A large construction pipeline can coexist with limited uncommitted capacity, and preleased projects are not necessarily available to new customers. Power access and schedule affect when announced supply becomes usable. As CBRE’s Pat Lynch put it, “Developers are bringing more projects to market, but occupiers are absorbing new capacity almost as quickly as it can be delivered.”

The defensible interpretation is consolidation followed by expansion, not a measured victory over an ongoing competitor. Vantage acquired NGD and integrated its people and Welsh campus in 2020; later company reports show Vantage’s wider investment and capacity plans. The evidence does not provide a like-for-like post-acquisition comparison of Vantage and NGD as independent operators, nor does it establish the acquisition price.
Quick Recap
- Acquired: NGD’s team and South Wales campus entered Vantage’s platform in 2020.
- Company-reported expansion: Vantage reported 2024 financing, openings, and a global capacity total that included planned as well as existing sites.
- Announced pipeline: Nevada’s 224 MW and nearly $3 billion were project plans in the July 2025 announcement, not verified operating results.
- Market backdrop: CBRE’s H1 2026 construction and preleasing figures cover eight primary North American markets, not Vantage’s global portfolio.
