Amazon did not publish one exact total for its AWS layoffs. In its April 3, 2024 announcement, the company said it was eliminating “a few hundred roles” in its physical-stores technology team and “several hundred roles” in AWS sales, marketing and global services. A separate Reuters report on July 17, 2025 described at least hundreds of additional AWS jobs being eliminated, again without a precise company figure.
How many AWS jobs is Amazon cutting?
The best-supported figures are ranges, not a verified combined headcount:
| Episode | Organizations identified | Headcount language | How certain is the number? |
|---|---|---|---|
| April 3, 2024 announcement | Physical-stores technology; AWS sales, marketing and global services | “A few hundred” roles in physical-stores technology and “several hundred” in the AWS sales, marketing and global services organization | Amazon’s own descriptions, but no exact combined total |
| July 17, 2025 report | Particular AWS teams, including specialists according to Reuters’ sources | At least hundreds of jobs | Reuters cited two people familiar with the matter; Amazon did not provide a more accurate number |
Those descriptions should not be added together as if they were a single audited total. The 2025 report concerns a separate action, and neither episode includes a complete public breakdown by country, office or job family.
What happened in April 2024?
Amazon announced a targeted reorganization across more than one AWS-related organization. The physical-stores technology team was one affected area, while another reduction covered AWS sales, marketing and global services. The announcement therefore was not a shutdown of AWS or a single-team redundancy exercise.

Amazon spokesperson Duncan Neasham said: “These decisions are difficult but necessary as we continue to invest, hire, and optimize resources to deliver innovation for our customers.” That wording presents the cuts as a resource-allocation decision: some roles were removed while investment and hiring continued in areas Amazon considered higher priority.
Why is Amazon laying off AWS employees?
Amazon’s stated explanation was strategic optimization and organizational priorities. The company did not attribute the April 2024 reductions to one specific technology, product failure or geographic event.

The later 2025 episode had a broader workforce context. About a month earlier, CEO Andy Jassy had warned that greater use of generative-AI tools would reduce the company’s workforce. Reuters’ account and Amazon’s statement support a qualified conclusion: AI-related productivity pressure was part of the backdrop, but Amazon described the immediate AWS action as eliminating roles across particular teams after reviewing organizational priorities. The available statements do not establish that AI alone caused every affected position.
Is AWS still hiring?
Yes. The Associated Press reported in connection with the 2024 announcement that Amazon still had thousands of AWS job openings. The company said it would try to identify internal opportunities for employees whose roles were affected.

Continued openings do not contradict layoffs. Large organizations can remove positions in one function while recruiting in another—for example, shifting capacity among sales, services, technical specialties or newer priorities. The evidence supports describing the events as targeted restructuring alongside ongoing AWS hiring, not as an AWS closure.
How the 2024 and 2025 cuts differ
Timing and scope
The April 2024 announcement named two AWS-related organizational areas and used separate “few hundred” and “several hundred” descriptions. The July 2025 report described another reduction affecting particular AWS teams and specialists, with at least hundreds of jobs involved.

Source of the estimates
The 2024 ranges came from Amazon’s public announcement. The 2025 estimate came from Reuters sources familiar with the matter; Amazon confirmed that some roles were eliminated but declined to give a more precise number.
What is known about the rationale
For 2024, Amazon emphasized investment, hiring and optimization. For 2025, the company again referred to a difficult business decision across selected teams, while the timing placed the cuts in the wider debate over generative-AI-driven productivity.

What has not been disclosed
- An exact combined headcount for the April 2024 reductions.
- A verified total for the July 2025 AWS action.
- A complete geographic breakdown or list of every affected job title.
- Severance terms, notification timelines or individual employee accounts.
Without those details, claims about the precise number of people affected, the proportion of AWS staff involved or the financial cost of the cuts would go beyond the public evidence.
What the cuts mean for AWS workers and applicants
Employees should read the announcements as evidence that AWS staffing is being rebalanced, not that demand for cloud services has disappeared. An affected role may be removed even while another AWS team is recruiting, and Amazon’s stated intention to seek internal opportunities means redeployment was part of its response, although no placement rate was disclosed.
Applicants should evaluate the specific organization, location and role rather than treating “AWS” as one uniform hiring market. Openings can coexist with reductions when skills and priorities change, particularly as companies automate work and redirect investment toward selected products and specialties.
