Some changes are already operating—including NextGen Acela on the Northeast Corridor, Mardi Gras Service on the Gulf Coast and Borealis between the Twin Cities and Chicago. Many fleet and infrastructure upgrades remain in construction, procurement or testing, so the benefits depend on where you travel and whether projects are delivered on schedule.
What Amtrak’s record year actually means
Amtrak’s fiscal year 2025 ran from October 2024 through September 2025. In its FY2025 Company Profile, published in 2026, the railroad reported 34.5 million customer trips, up 5.1% from FY2024. Adjusted ticket revenue was $2.7 billion, and total operating revenue was $3.9 billion. Those figures describe the company’s results; they are not a measure of how much service improved on any single route. Amtrak FY2025 Company Profile
Amtrak also reported a 4.3% increase in network capacity and 6.9 billion miles traveled. It invested $5.5 billion in major capital projects and state-of-good-repair initiatives, including $1.1 billion for track, catenary, signal and structural maintenance. That investment supports both repairs and expansion, but spending in one year does not mean a project is finished or that the same amount will recur.
Which upgrades can riders experience now?
NextGen Acela on the Northeast Corridor
NextGen Acela entered service on August 28, 2025, serving Boston, New York, Washington, D.C., and intermediate communities. Amtrak’s August 28, 2026 anniversary update reported nearly 1.5 million trips, more than 1.1 million miles traveled, over 3,300 frequencies and 16 trainsets in service during its first year. Effective August 31, 2026, the schedule was set to provide 37% more weekday departures, 75% more Saturday departures and 43% more Sunday departures than before the fleet launch. Those are schedule comparisons for Acela—not increases across Amtrak’s national network. Amtrak’s NextGen Acela first-anniversary update

Mardi Gras Service and Borealis
Mardi Gras Service launched between Mobile, Alabama, and New Orleans, restoring Gulf Coast passenger rail after 20 years and adding five stations to Amtrak’s network. Amtrak reported more than 18,000 passengers in the service’s first month. Borealis, which runs between the Twin Cities and Chicago, carried nearly a quarter million riders in its first full year. Amtrak also reported a 227% year-over-year corridor ridership increase since Borealis launched in FY2024. These results show new or expanded service in distinct regions, not a promise of similar additions elsewhere.
Amtrak also reported more Pacific Surfliner frequencies. Check the schedule for your route and travel date: a systemwide record or a change on one corridor does not establish that another corridor has added trains. Amtrak’s FY2025 year-in-review

What is still being built, tested or refreshed?
Airo trains are not yet established as regular passenger service
Amtrak’s FY2025 financial filing says Siemens Mobility is contracted to build 83 Airo trainsets, with options for up to 130 more. Most are designed to operate with either electric or diesel power. The first set was sent for testing on the Northeast Corridor in fall 2025. The filing does not establish a regular passenger-service launch date, so travelers should not assume Airo trains are available on a particular route yet. More NextGen Acela trainsets remain in production
At the end of FY2025, five NextGen Acela trainsets were in revenue service and 23 more were under construction, according to the financial filing. Amtrak’s later August 2026 update reported 16 in service. The difference illustrates why delivery status should be tied to a date: a procurement figure from fiscal year-end is not a current fleet count.

Long-distance Superliner refresh
Amtrak said it refreshed 87% of its long-distance Superliner fleet during FY2025, adding or replacing items such as seat cushions, upholstery, carpet, LED lighting, tables and curtains. The figure applies to the fleet reported in that update, not every car or every long-distance route.
Bridges, tunnels and stations
The FY2025 capital program included work on Portal North Bridge, Connecticut River Bridge, East River Tunnel and Philadelphia’s William H. Gray III 30th Street Station. The projects are at different stages, including construction and advancement; a large capital budget is not the same as completed infrastructure. Amtrak’s November 2025 year-in-review had forecast the first East River Tunnel tube to return to service in summer 2026, followed by work on the second tube. That forecast is now past, and the cited update does not establish the project’s present status.

Station accessibility
Amtrak’s FY2025 year-in-review said 19 stations had been brought into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and 50 more were targeted for completion in FY2026. The 50 was a target, not a confirmed completion count in that update. Accessibility improvements are part of a longer station effort, so travelers should verify the facilities available at their departure and arrival stations.

Amtrak’s Office of Inspector General (OIG), in its July 2026 summary of challenges for FY2026–FY2027, provides an important counterpoint to the company’s record-setting figures. The OIG says shortcomings in ongoing train procurements have led to years-long delays, change orders and forgone revenue. It also says available train capacity is insufficient for current demand, with aging equipment and obsolete parts among the contributing factors. Amtrak OIG’s FY2026–FY2027 challenge summary

- Amfleet cars have unique inside bearing trucks which replicate the prototype design
- All-wheel electrical pickup on all cars allows easy installation of optional interior lights
- Phase Vb locomotive and VI cars mimic Amtrak's most modern equipment
The OIG also flags challenges involving affordability, on-time performance, customer satisfaction, fleet maintenance, delay communications, accessibility, technology modernization and cybersecurity. These are reasons not to treat record ridership, revenue or investment as proof that every rider’s experience is improving. Train availability, track capacity, local construction, state and regional partnerships, and procurement schedules all shape what a specific corridor can deliver.
Quick Recap
How to tell whether an upgrade affects your route
- Start with your corridor and travel dates. Look for a route-specific announcement or timetable change; national totals do not show what is scheduled where you travel.
- Separate service in operation from planned or tested equipment. A trainset under construction or testing is not evidence that passengers can book it.
- Check the exact change being claimed. A new train, more departures, a station renovation and a track project are different improvements, with different effects on a trip.
- Confirm project status close to travel. Construction milestones and service schedules can change, especially when a project depends on local work or other agencies.
- Check station accessibility and trip details directly. A network-level accessibility target does not confirm the facilities at a particular station.
