Amit Bhatia stepped down as Queens Park Rangers chairman on 1 November 2023, and chief executive Lee Hoos took over the chairmanship while continuing as CEO. Bhatia stayed on QPR’s board at the time; his later departure as a director was recorded separately in July 2026.
Why did Amit Bhatia step down as QPR chairman?
Bhatia said increasing responsibilities and commitments made it difficult to give the chairmanship the time it required. BBC Sport reported that he had also waited for QPR’s new head coach to arrive so the leadership handover could happen smoothly. Bhatia had served as chairman for five years.
He said: “Due to ever-increasing responsibilities and commitments on my time, it is now proving challenging for me to dedicate as much time to this position as is required and deserved.”
Who replaced Bhatia?
Lee Hoos became chairman on 1 November 2023, alongside his existing role as QPR chief executive. Hoos said the board had asked him to take on the position and that the chairmanship would have a more visible presence—something Bhatia had wanted to provide but found increasingly difficult to do. BBC Sport reported the announcement and both men’s comments.

Did Bhatia leave QPR in 2023?
No. Stepping down as chairman did not mean Bhatia left the club or its board at that point. He remained a director after Hoos took over the chairmanship.
What happened to Bhatia at QPR after the chair change?
A later Companies House filing records that Bhatia’s appointment as a director of QPR Holdings Limited terminated on 21 July 2026. The filing was submitted on 23 July 2026. This is a separate event from the 2023 chairmanship handover: the filing concerns his directorship, not who replaced him as chairman. Companies House lists the company’s filing history and notes that it does not check the accuracy of information filed.

A separate report attributed to BBC Sport and republished by AOL said Bhatia agreed to transfer his ownership stake to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam. The Companies House director filing does not verify a share transfer, so the two claims should not be treated as the same transaction.

Earlier context: Bhatia became chairman in 2018
Bhatia took over the chairmanship on 15 August 2018 after Tony Fernandes stepped down. Ruben Gnanalingam left the co-chair role and became vice-chairman at that time. This was Bhatia’s appointment, not the later 2023 departure. ITV reported the 2018 change.
