1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAmericans’ views of prescription weight-loss drugs are conditional, not simply pro or anti: support is stronger when adults have obesity or a related health condition and weaker when use is framed as cosmetic, outside those circumstances, or involving teenagers. That distinction matters for personal finances, too. The surveys describe attitudes—not what a particular treatment will cost, whether insurance will cover it, or whether it is right for an individual.
Why do Americans have mixed views of weight-loss drugs?
The split is largely about who is using the medicines and why. In its February 2024 report, Pew Research Center found Americans more likely to view weight-loss drugs as a good option for people with obesity than for people without weight-related health conditions. Pew also reported broad awareness but modest expectations for the drugs’ ability to affect obesity nationally.
A separate AP-NORC poll, conducted January 9–13, 2025 and published January 31, found more approval than disapproval of adults using weight-loss drugs when they have obesity or a related health condition. Support was substantially lower for use outside those circumstances. The poll also asked about teenagers, another area where views differ from adult treatment. These are snapshots from two surveys with different questions and dates, not a single measure of public opinion.
“Love-hate relationship” is a useful description of that tension, not a category measured by either poll. The practical dividing lines are medical need, age, and whether treatment is supervised by a clinician—not a universal judgment about the medicines.

What are these medicines, and why do the names matter?
GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic a hormone involved in blood glucose and appetite. The FDA describes them as medicines that “mimic the effects of a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that is released by the intestine.” Different products have different names and indications, so Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound should not be treated as interchangeable terms. A medicine’s intended use and whether it is an appropriate option depend on its product labeling and a clinician’s assessment.
The distinction matters when evaluating claims about popularity, medical use, or spending. A prescription may be used in a diabetes-related context, for weight management, or for another product-specific indication. A public-opinion question about “weight-loss drugs” does not by itself reveal which product or clinical use respondents have in mind.

What do the available use figures actually show?
National Center for Health Statistics data, published in 2025 from the 2024 National Health Interview Survey, found that 26.5% of U.S. adults with diagnosed diabetes reported using injectable GLP-1 medicines. The survey relied on respondents’ self-reports, and its question combined use to lower blood sugar with use to lose weight. It is not an estimate of use among all Americans or of weight-loss-only use.
The same report found use among 33.3% of adults with diagnosed diabetes ages 50–64 and 32.4% of adults with diagnosed diabetes and obesity. Each figure has a narrower denominator than the headline 26.5% figure; none should be read as a national share of people taking the drugs solely for weight loss.

What should a personal-finance decision account for?
The evidence summarized here does not establish comparable current insurance coverage or out-of-pocket costs. Coverage and a patient’s actual bill cannot be inferred from a medicine’s popularity or from a poll about whether its use is appropriate. Before treating a prescription as part of a budget, ask the prescriber and insurer about the specific product, intended use, coverage decision, and expected patient responsibility. Confirm any estimate for the individual plan and pharmacy rather than assuming it applies broadly.
For a household weighing treatment, separate three questions that are often blurred together:

- Clinical fit: Is this particular medicine appropriate for the person and its intended use? Discuss that with a licensed clinician.
- Coverage and cost: What will the insurer cover for this prescription and use, and what will the patient owe? The available evidence here does not supply a universal price or coverage answer.
- Public impact: Do rising awareness or reported use prove that the drugs are reducing obesity nationally? The cited polls and use figures do not establish that causal conclusion.
What did the FDA’s 2026 safety review find?
On January 13, 2026, the FDA said its meta-analysis of 91 placebo-controlled trials involving 107,910 patients did not show an increased risk of suicidal ideation or behavior, or of other listed psychiatric adverse events such as anxiety, depression, irritability, or psychosis. The agency requested removal of the suicidal-behavior and ideation warning from labels that included it.
This is a change in the FDA’s assessment of that specific warning, not a finding that GLP-1 medicines are risk-free or that every potential adverse effect has been ruled out. Patients should discuss concerns and changes in symptoms with their clinician.

Why does the FDA distinguish compounded products?
FDA says unapproved compounded versions of GLP-1 drugs “do not undergo FDA’s review for safety, effectiveness and quality before they are marketed.” The agency has described reports involving temperature-control problems, dosing errors, and fraudulent products. Those are distinct quality and dosing concerns; they should not be confused with the FDA-approved products’ review status.
FDA’s adverse-event report counts for these products are not incidence rates and do not, on their own, establish that a product caused a reported event. Anyone considering a compounded product should discuss the risks and source with a clinician and review the FDA’s current information rather than assume it is equivalent to an FDA-approved medicine.
Do popular drugs prove that national obesity rates are changing?
No. Pew’s survey measured awareness and expectations, AP-NORC measured opinions about use, and the NCHS estimate measured self-reported injectable GLP-1 use among adults with diagnosed diabetes. These different measures do not show that increased uptake caused a change in national obesity prevalence. Individual treatment outcomes and population-level trends are separate questions.
