By total departing flights in calendar year 2025, Delta’s Atlanta hub was busiest among the major hubs for American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines. American’s Dallas/Fort Worth hub ranked second, followed by its Charlotte hub; United’s highest-ranked hub was Chicago O’Hare, at No. 4. The ranking measures departures from each airport, not passenger totals or connection potential. The Points Guy’s 2026 presentation of Cirium data provides the comparison.
How the three airlines’ hubs ranked by 2025 departures
The ranking below compares airport-and-carrier pairs by total departing flights in calendar year 2025. Because Chicago O’Hare appears for both United and American, it occupies two places: each entry represents a different airline’s operation at the airport.
| Rank | Airport | Carrier | What the ranking shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Atlanta (ATL) | Delta | Top airport-carrier pair by departing flights |
| 2 | Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) | American | American’s highest-ranked hub |
| 3 | Charlotte (CLT) | American | American’s next-ranked hub |
| 4 | Chicago O’Hare (ORD) | United | United’s highest-ranked hub |
| 5 | Denver (DEN) | United | United’s next-ranked hub |
| 6 | Houston George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) | United | United’s third hub in the top ten |
| 7 | Chicago O’Hare (ORD) | American | American’s O’Hare operation |
| 8 | Newark Liberty (EWR) | United | United hub in the top ten |
| 9 | Miami International (MIA) | American | American hub in the top ten |
| 10 | Detroit Metropolitan (DTW) | Delta | Delta hub in the top ten |
The source is Cirium data as reported by The Points Guy in 2026. The ranking is useful for comparing airline operating scale at hubs, but it does not establish why an airline has more flights there or how many passengers connect. Airports such as JFK and LAX are not listed because no single airline is as dominant there in the comparison.
Why “busiest” depends on the measure
A hub can lead in departures, airport-wide passenger traffic, or the number and quality of possible connections. Those measures answer different questions, and a leader under one need not lead under another.

| Measure | What it counts or estimates | What it says about these hubs |
|---|---|---|
| Airline departures | Flights departing from an airport for the carrier in the ranking | ATL/Delta leads the cited 2025 comparison. |
| Total airport passengers | Passengers across all airlines, including local and connecting traffic | Atlanta handled more than 106 million passengers in 2025 and remained the world’s busiest airport by passenger traffic, according to ACI World’s 2025 traffic rankings, published in 2026. This is an airport-wide total, not Delta passenger traffic. |
| Connection potential | Scheduled opportunities to connect, rather than actual connecting passengers | OAG’s 2026 U.S. Domestic Megahubs ranking places ORD first, ATL second, DFW third, DEN fourth, and CLT fifth. |
| FAA hub size | An airport category based on total airport enplanements | The FAA’s hub-size classification applies to airports; it is not a ranking of airline network hubs. See the FAA explanation of airport categories. |
What the rankings reveal about each airline
Delta: Atlanta leads on departures
ATL is first in the 2025 departing-flight comparison. It is also second in OAG’s 2026 domestic connection-potential ranking, where OAG reports that Delta operates 80% of the airport’s flights. The percentage describes Delta’s share of flights at ATL in OAG’s ranking, not its share of Atlanta’s total passengers.
American: Dallas/Fort Worth and Charlotte lead its showing
DFW ranks second overall and CLT third by 2025 departures. OAG places DFW third and CLT fifth for 2026 domestic connection potential, reporting American flight shares of 85% at DFW and 88% at CLT.

Charlotte Douglas’s fiscal-year 2024 annual comprehensive financial report describes CLT as American’s second-busiest hub. For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024, the airport recorded 28.6 million enplanements, and American and its affiliates accounted for 88.8% of those enplanements. These are airport-wide figures for that fiscal year, not calendar-year 2025 results. Charlotte Douglas financial information and ACFR.
United: O’Hare is its top-ranked hub, with Denver close behind
ORD ranks fourth and DEN fifth in the 2025 departures comparison; Houston IAH and Newark EWR also make the top ten. OAG’s 2026 domestic Megahubs list ranks ORD first and DEN fourth for connection potential. It reports a 49% United flight share at ORD, indicating that United has a smaller share of flights there than Delta has at ATL or American has at DFW in the same OAG comparison.

O’Hare appears for both United and American
The ranking lists United’s ORD operation at No. 4 and American’s at No. 7. The Points Guy notes American’s growth at O’Hare as part of a competitive contest with United; the departure ranking itself does not quantify the causes or commercial effects of that competition.

If you mean “which airline sends the most flights from one of its hubs,” use the 2025 departures ranking: ATL for Delta, DFW for American, and ORD for United’s top showing. If you mean airport scale, Atlanta’s passenger total is the relevant figure. If you are comparing how many scheduled domestic connections may be available, use OAG’s separate connectivity ranking, where O’Hare leads.

- Toy airplane for kids: This must-have for the young aviator in your life includes a single toy plane with rolling wheels and authentic livery

These comparisons do not establish which hub will be best for a particular itinerary. A traveler should compare the actual schedules, fares, connection times, and airports for the dates and route in question; a large hub can offer many flights without being the most convenient choice for every trip.

Dates and scope to keep in mind
- The airline hub departure comparison covers calendar year 2025 and was reported by The Points Guy in 2026 from Cirium data. It is not a full-year 2026 ranking.
- OAG’s Megahubs results are a 2026 measure of domestic connection potential, not the same measurement as flight departures.
- ACI World’s Atlanta passenger figure covers all airport traffic in 2025; it should not be attributed to Delta alone.
- Charlotte’s 28.6 million enplanements and 88.8% carrier share refer to fiscal year 2024, ending June 30, 2024.
