American Airlines’ New Premium-Heavy 787-9 Faced Maintenance Disruptions in 2025

A June 2025 report described maintenance-related disruptions involving one new American Airlines Boeing 787-9P, registration N846AN—not a fleet-wide grounding. The report said the aircraft had two cancellations among four scheduled commercial flights and a delay of at least 32 hours. The suspected door, pressurization, or engine problems were not confirmed, and the sources available do not establish the aircraft’s later service status.

What happened to American Airlines’ 787-9P N846AN?

A June 2025 account by The WestWind Journal described early operational problems with N846AN, one of two new premium-heavy Boeing 787-9P aircraft it identified. Its account gives this sequence:

  1. N846AN was delivered from Paine Field to Dallas-Fort Worth on June 4, 2025.

  2. During an attempted repositioning flight to Chicago, it returned to DFW, then later reached Chicago.

  3. Its first scheduled round-trip to Los Angeles was canceled for maintenance reasons.

  4. The aircraft later completed an outbound flight after a delay attributed to crew availability; its return was delayed by at least 32 hours.

The report characterized the resulting pattern as repeated scheduling and maintenance disruption. It counted two cancellations among four scheduled commercial flights and reported at least one delay of 32 hours. Those figures describe the flights in that report, not a measured reliability trend for American’s 787 fleet. The operational details are secondary reporting, not airline or regulator records independently confirmed here.

The same report said the companion aircraft, N845MD, appeared to operate without comparable problems during the period it examined. That short-window comparison does not establish a broader difference between the aircraft.

Was the cause a door or engine problem?

The exact technical fault was not confirmed in the sources available. The WestWind Journal relayed an explanation attributed to aviation-news account JonNYC alleging a cabin-door alignment problem that caused a pressurization issue. It also repeated speculation that door seals might have deteriorated while the aircraft was stored or unused. A separate engine-related possibility appeared in another outlet’s summary. These are attributed possibilities, not established findings.

No primary American Airlines maintenance statement, FAA incident record, or independent published investigation confirming N846AN’s root cause was available. It is therefore not possible to say from these sources whether the disruption resulted from a door, pressurization, engine, or other issue.

What the FAA’s separate 787 actions do—and do not—show

FAA directives and production oversight developments are not evidence of the cause of N846AN’s 2025 disruption. The directives below address distinct conditions and do not name N846AN as connected to this event:

Separately, the FAA announced on July 17, 2026 that Boeing could resume issuing airworthiness certificates for all 737 MAX and 787 aircraft at the end of production, effective July 20. The FAA said it would continue inspections, audits, and monitoring of Boeing’s production system. The announcement concerns production-stage certification oversight; it does not establish whether N846AN was repaired or when it returned to service. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said, “Safety drives everything we do, and this step forward is only possible because we are confident it can be done safely,” in that announcement.

Is N846AN still grounded?

The June 2025 report documents a period of disruption, but the sources available do not establish when N846AN returned to service or its present operational status. The report should be read as historical coverage, not a current status update. A current claim that the aircraft is grounded, repaired, or flying requires a later, reliable status source.
