American Airlines’ New Premium Economy vs. Delta Premium Select: 2026 Comparison

American’s redesigned Premium Economy seat on its retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER stands out for its adjustable calf and foot rests, wireless charging, USB-C and AC power, and added storage. Delta Premium Select has published maximum dimensions—38 inches of pitch, 19 inches of width and 7 inches of recline—but the cited announcement for American’s new seat gives no matching measurements. That means the available figures do not establish which seat is roomier. The better choice depends on the aircraft actually assigned, the services included in the fare and the features you value.

What American’s new Premium Economy seat includes

American announced its first retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER in 2026. That aircraft has 44 Premium Economy seats with sculpted headrests, adjustable calf and foot rests, and enhanced storage. American also lists wireless charging, water-bottle storage, USB-C and AC power. The airline said the aircraft’s first commercial flight would be New York (JFK) to Buenos Aires (EZE) on September 2, 2026; route and aircraft assignments can change. American Airlines’ 2026 announcement describes this specific retrofit.

“New American Premium Economy” does not refer to one identical setup across the fleet. American’s broader Premium Economy page describes wider adjustable leather seats, more legroom, extendable foot and head rests, personal on-demand entertainment, power outlets and USB ports. It lists the cabin on selected 777-300s, 777-200s, 787-9s and 787-8s flying internationally and to Alaska; those general details do not establish that every aircraft has the redesigned 777-300ER seat.

American separately described Premium Economy features for its A321XLR, including a winged headrest, calf and foot rests, wireless charging and enhanced dining with hot meal entrees. That is a distinct aircraft configuration, not evidence that the A321XLR and retrofitted 777-300ER have the same seat. See American’s 2025 A321XLR announcement.

What Delta Premium Select publishes

Delta describes Premium Select as a cabin on select international routes. Its agency product page, updated July 8, 2026, lists maximum dimensions of 38-inch pitch, 19-inch width and 7-inch recline. It also lists adjustable leg and head rests, in-seat power, storage, an entertainment screen up to 13.3 inches, noise-canceling headsets and Sky Priority services. These are published maxima and amenity descriptions, not a promise that every aircraft has the same setup. Delta’s Premium Select page specifically notes that the 757-200 configuration does not include the foot and leg rest, 13.3-inch screen or headsets; the aircraft has a different screen and audio arrangement on specified routes.

Delta’s A350-900 aircraft page provides aircraft-level specifications, underscoring why the operating model and seat map matter. A published cabin maximum should not be treated as a measurement for every flight.

American’s new seat vs. Delta Premium Select

Comparison American new 777-300ER Premium Economy Delta Premium Select What the information supports
Seat support and design Sculpted headrest; adjustable calf and foot rests; enhanced storage (American, 2026 announcement) Adjustable leg and head rests; up to 7 inches of recline (Delta product page, updated July 8, 2026) Both describe support features; the published descriptions do not identify a comfort winner.
Pitch, width and recline Matching figures not stated in American’s cited 2026 announcement Up to 38 inches pitch, 19 inches width and 7 inches recline (Delta published maxima) The available figures cannot establish a dimensional winner because the sources do not provide matched measurements.
Charging and storage Wireless charging, USB-C, AC power and water-bottle storage (American, 2026 announcement) In-seat power and storage; exact provision may depend on aircraft (Delta product page) American’s announcement gives more specific charging details for this particular aircraft.
Entertainment and audio Personal on-demand entertainment and noise-reducing headphones are described on American’s general Premium Economy page; details for the new seat are not specified in the cited announcement. Screen up to 13.3 inches and noise-canceling headsets are listed, with the 757-200 caveat above. Check the aircraft configuration rather than assuming these amenities are on every flight.
Availability Premium Economy is on selected aircraft; the redesigned seat is tied to the 777-300ER retrofit. American has separately described an A321XLR configuration. Premium Select is on selected international routes, with aircraft-dependent configurations. The itinerary and assigned aircraft can matter more than the cabin label.
Included services American’s agency overview revised April 21, 2026 lists two checked bags, priority check-in and security, and Group 4 boarding for Premium Economy. Delta describes Sky Priority; fare options vary. Compare the actual ticket inclusions and current fare rules, not just the cabin names.

American’s service details come from its agency product overview, revised April 21, 2026. Verify the ticket conditions for your itinerary before booking; inclusions and operating details can be itinerary-specific.

Which cabin is the better choice?

Choose based on the features you can verify

  • If device charging is important, American’s new 777-300ER announcement explicitly names wireless charging, USB-C and AC power. Delta lists in-seat power, but its page does not make the same aircraft-specific charging claims for every configuration.
  • If published seat dimensions are a priority, Delta provides useful maxima. Because American’s cited announcement does not give matching measurements, those numbers cannot show that Delta is roomier than the new American seat.
  • If you value leg and head support, both airlines describe adjustable support features. Delta’s 757-200 exception matters if that aircraft is on your itinerary.
  • If baggage, airport priority or boarding benefits affect the value of your ticket, compare the inclusions attached to the fare you are buying. American’s agency overview lists two checked bags, priority check-in and security, and Group 4 boarding; Delta describes Sky Priority, while fare options vary.

Check the aircraft before relying on a feature

  1. Open your itinerary and identify the operating aircraft, not just the airline or cabin name.
  2. Review the current seat map and aircraft details for the specific flight. Confirm the seat features that matter to you, particularly on Delta’s 757-200 or when an American itinerary may use an aircraft other than the retrofitted 777-300ER.
  3. Check the fare conditions for baggage, priority services and other inclusions. Recheck the aircraft assignment close to departure because it can change.

What the comparison cannot establish

The airline materials establish what each carrier says its cabins offer; they are not independent seat tests or passenger comfort studies. The cited information does not provide matched dimensions for American’s new 777 seat and Delta Premium Select, a current route-by-route fare comparison, or evidence that one seat is more comfortable. A personal preference or price advantage cannot be ranked from these feature descriptions alone.
