American Airlines raised checked-bag fees in stages in 2026. For many covered U.S. and Canada trips, Main Cabin passengers now pay $50 for the first checked bag and $60 for the second at the airport, or $45 and $55, respectively, when eligible to prepay online. Many Basic Economy tickets issued on or after May 18 have higher rates. The exact charge depends on the route, ticket issue date, fare, bag number and traveler benefits.
What changed, and when?
The changes rolled out in three stages rather than as one universal price increase:
- February 18, 2026: American raised the airport fee for a second checked bag on covered domestic, Canada and short-haul international trips to $50, or $45 with eligible online prepayment. The first-bag price did not change at that point. American’s February announcement
- April 9, 2026: For many covered Main Cabin itineraries, the first bag became $50 at the airport or $45 online; the second became $60 or $55. These rates apply to tickets issued on or after April 9, subject to route-specific rules. American’s April announcement
- May 18, 2026: Many covered Basic Economy itineraries moved to $55 for the first bag and $65 for the second at the airport, or $50 and $60 online. Some international markets have separate pricing, so these figures should not be applied to every route. American’s May announcement
American states that checked-bag fees are per person, each way. Published base rates may not include taxes. The ticket’s issue date matters, so a traveler should not assume a newer fee applies to an older ticket—or that an older fee still applies to a newly issued one.
How much are the first and second checked bags?
For many covered U.S. and Canada trips, these are the published airport and eligible online-prepayment rates:

The table is a guide to commonly applicable rates, not a universal fare chart. American’s route-specific checked-bag policy lists different amounts for some markets, and some international routes include free bags in Main Cabin while charging Basic Economy customers. Direction of travel, cabin, ticket issue date and the traveler’s benefits can also affect the amount.
For many covered U.S. and Canada trips, the third checked bag is listed at $200 for tickets issued on or after April 9, 2026. Earlier tickets may be subject to an earlier rate. Check American’s policy for the specific itinerary and bag count before paying.

Why did American raise the fees?
American’s official announcements describe the new prices, effective dates, online discount and affected fare groups, but do not state a specific reason for the increases. They do not attribute the decision to fuel, inflation, labor costs or another cause. Without a separately attributable explanation, it would be speculative to claim why the airline raised its fees.
Can you avoid paying the checked-bag fee?
Some travelers qualify for complimentary bags, but eligibility depends on the itinerary, fare and benefit. American’s policy identifies these common exceptions:

American says, “All AAdvantage® status members will continue to receive complimentary bags on American Airlines flights.” The allowance remains subject to the applicable fare and itinerary conditions. A codeshare flight operated by a partner may use a different baggage policy; consult the operating carrier’s rules as well as the ticket details. See American’s checked-bag policy for eligibility and conditions.
Is it cheaper to pay for bags online?
For the common rates shown above, eligible online prepayment saves $5 per bag compared with paying at the airport. American says travelers can prepay online up to two hours before departure on eligible itineraries marketed and operated by American; some destinations are excluded. The discount is not a guarantee that online payment is available for every route or booking. Confirm the total for the itinerary before completing payment. American’s checked-bag policy

Airport-paid baggage fees are generally non-refundable. If you believe American charged you incorrectly, the airline provides a process to request a refund. Review the fee and refund terms in American’s optional-service fee information and use its stated refund process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the bag limits before you pack
American’s usual checked-bag limit is 50 lb (23 kg) and 62 in (158 cm) in total outside dimensions. Some premium-cabin allowances and Australia/New Zealand itineraries have different weight rules. The itinerary-specific policy controls. A luggage scale can help you check a packed bag at home, but it cannot guarantee that the bag will meet the airline’s requirements.
