The departure was not a 2026 event: Stephen Johnson temporarily led the Commercial organization after Raja, and American later named Nat Pieper as CCO, effective November 3, 2025.
Who left American Airlines in June 2024?
It was Vasu Raja, who had served as American Airlines’ Chief Commercial Officer since April 2022. The company announced his planned departure on May 28, 2024, saying he would leave in June. American’s announcement did not give a specific departure day or explain a reason for the decision.
Raja joined American in 2004 and held roles in Sales, Planning, and Revenue Management. Before becoming CCO, he served as Chief Revenue Officer and Senior Vice President of Network Strategy, with responsibility for Network and Alliances. American Airlines’ May 28, 2024 announcement provides the company’s account of his tenure and departure.
Who led the Commercial organization after Raja?
American said Stephen Johnson would assume leadership of the Commercial organization effective immediately and help lead the search for a new CCO. This was an interim leadership arrangement; the announcement did not name Johnson as Raja’s permanent replacement.

Who became American Airlines’ CCO after Raja?
In 2025, American announced that Nat Pieper, then CEO of the oneworld alliance, would become Chief Commercial Officer effective November 3, 2025. The company said the CCO role covers commercial strategy, planning, and performance across alliances and partnerships, cargo, the co-branded credit card program, loyalty, network planning, revenue management, and sales and distribution. Johnson was to resume his Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer role. American’s announcement of Pieper’s appointment describes the succession and role remit.
Was Stephen Johnson’s 2026 retirement the CCO departure?
No. A separate American Airlines Group filing says Johnson informed the company on June 14, 2026, that he planned to retire at the end of that year. The filing, dated June 16, identifies him as Vice Chair and Chief Strategy Officer—not CCO. In an employee communication attached to the filing, CEO Robert Isom said, “After more than 30 years in the industry, Steve has informed me that he plans to retire later this year.”
