An AOL report published January 27, citing FlightAware figures, also said U.S. cancellations reached 11,618 on January 25—the highest total the report said had been recorded since the COVID-19 pandemic. These are contemporaneous tracker figures, not Department of Transportation totals.
What happened during Winter Storm Fern?
Severe winter weather affected many states in late January 2026. AOL reported that the storm significantly disrupted American’s Dallas–Fort Worth hub and that the airline canceled more than 2,500 flights across January 26 and 27. As of its January 27 publication, the report said more than 700 American flights were scheduled to be canceled that Tuesday.
The report quoted American Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden: “It’s all hands on deck as we work hard to keep our operation moving in the wake of Winter Storm Fern. Five of our nine hub airports were significantly impacted by this large and disruptive storm […]. Teams across American are working around the clock — in tandem with airport operators, vendor partners and federal partners, including FAA, CBP and TSA — to safely ramp up operations at these locations.”
How the reported cancellation totals changed
| Date or period | Reported figure | Attribution and context |
|---|---|---|
| January 24, 2026 | More than 1,000 American cancellations | AOL reported the figure, citing FlightAware. |
| January 25, 2026 | 11,618 U.S. cancellations; 1,914 American cancellations | AOL attributed the counts to FlightAware and said American’s total was 59% of its departures that day. |
| January 26–27, 2026 | More than 2,500 American cancellations | AOL reported the combined total from FlightAware figures; it separately described more than 700 cancellations scheduled for January 27 as of publication. |
AOL characterized the January 25 U.S. count as a record unseen since the COVID-19 pandemic. The underlying historical FlightAware record was not independently available here, so that comparison and the daily totals should be understood as the report’s attributed figures, not independently verified counts or DOT statistics. The totals describe a short, storm-affected period; they do not by themselves establish which airline is more reliable. A fair reliability comparison would account for schedule size, time window, weather and other operating conditions, and the reasons for cancellations.

If your flight is canceled, choose between rebooking and a refund
Under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s refund guidance, if an airline cancels your flight, you can decline rebooking, travel credits, vouchers or other offered alternatives and choose a refund instead. The refund right applies regardless of why the flight was canceled. If you still need to travel, accepting an alternative may be more useful; if you do not want the offered option, do not assume you must accept it to receive your money back. Check the airline’s notice for any response deadline.
- Credit-card payment: The refund is generally due within seven business days.
- Other payment methods: The refund is generally due within 20 calendar days.
Those timeframes come from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s refund guidance.

Do meal and hotel promises cover a weather cancellation?
Not automatically. The DOT’s Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard lists American’s commitments for cancellations within the airline’s control, including rebooking on American or a partner at no added cost, meals or meal vouchers when a cancellation creates a qualifying wait, and hotel accommodations for an overnight cancellation. Weather-related interruptions are not automatically covered by those controllable-cancellation commitments. The separate right to a refund when you decline alternatives still applies regardless of the cancellation’s cause.
