AMD’s second-quarter 2024 revenue reached $5.835 billion, up 9% from a year earlier and modestly above analyst estimates of about $5.7 billion. Adjusted diluted earnings per share were $0.69, versus a cited consensus of $0.68. The strategically important result was a 115% jump in Data Center revenue, which led AMD to raise its 2024 AI-chip revenue forecast to at least $4.5 billion. However, Gaming and Embedded revenue fell sharply, so the quarter was strong but uneven.
What AMD reported on July 30, 2024
AMD announced its fiscal Q2 2024 results on July 30, 2024. How large was the analyst beat?
The headline beat was relatively narrow. Market estimates vary by provider and by whether a figure is GAAP or adjusted:

The revenue and EPS comparisons were reported by outlets citing providers including LSEG and Visible Alpha. See Investing.com, Shacknews, and ThePrint for the cited consensus figures. These are not a massive miss-to-beat event; the more consequential news was the mix of growth, margin expansion, and higher AI guidance.
Data Center was the growth engine
Data Center revenue rose 115% year over year to $2.834 billion, making it nearly half of AMD’s quarterly sales. AMD attributed the increase to the ramp of Instinct MI300 accelerators and continued growth in EPYC server processors.

- Max. Boost Clock : Up to 5.7 GHz; Base Clock: 4.3 GHz
- Form Factor: Desktops , Boxed Processor
- Architecture: Zen 5; Former Codename: Granite Ridge AM5
The segment result supports the view that AMD was gaining commercially meaningful demand for AI infrastructure. It does not mean that all $2.8 billion was AI-accelerator revenue: the Data Center segment includes both CPUs and GPUs.
Client recovered while Gaming and Embedded weakened
Client
Client revenue was approximately $1.5 billion, up 49% year over year and 9% sequentially. Higher Ryzen processor sales indicated a recovery from the earlier PC downturn and helped offset declines elsewhere.

Gaming
Gaming revenue fell 59% year over year and 30% sequentially to $648 million. AMD said lower semi-custom revenue, including console-chip sales, was the primary reason. The decline should not be attributed solely to discrete PC graphics without additional evidence.
Embedded
Embedded revenue declined 41% year over year to $861 million. Continuing customer inventory normalization and weaker embedded-market demand weighed on the segment.

Why AMD raised its AI-chip forecast
AMD increased its forecast for 2024 data-center AI-product revenue to at least $4.5 billion, up from its prior $4 billion target. The change reflected stronger-than-expected demand and the ramp of the Instinct MI300 family.
This $4.5 billion is a company forecast for full-year AI-chip revenue, not revenue already recognized in Q2. It is also narrower than the Data Center segment: Data Center includes EPYC CPUs as well as Instinct accelerators. Deployment schedules, supply availability, customer qualification, export controls, competition, and pricing could all affect the eventual result.

What AMD guided for Q3 2024
On July 30, AMD guided to approximately $6.7 billion of Q3 revenue, plus or minus $300 million, and approximately 53.5% non-GAAP gross margin. At the midpoint, that implied roughly 16% year-over-year growth and 15% sequential growth. The cited analyst average was approximately $6.61 billion, putting the guidance midpoint modestly above expectations.
This was guidance issued on July 30, 2024, not an achieved quarter. AMD’s full Q3 range was approximately $6.4 billion to $7.0 billion.
What the quarter meant for AMD’s investment case
Evidence supporting the case
- MI300 shipments had become a meaningful commercial contributor rather than only a product announcement.
- Data Center growth and the higher AI forecast provided forward visibility beyond the modest Q2 consensus beat.
- Non-GAAP gross margin expanded to 53%, from 50% a year earlier and 52% in Q1 2024, indicating a more favorable product mix.
- EPYC, Instinct, and Ryzen gave AMD several growth avenues across servers, AI infrastructure, and PCs.
Risks that remained
- Concentration: AMD’s growth increasingly depended on Data Center demand, so a slowdown in AI infrastructure spending or delayed deployments could have an outsized effect.
- Competition: Nvidia remained the dominant AI-accelerator supplier. AMD’s opportunity depended on performance, software support, supply, customer qualification, and pricing, not demand alone.
- Weak businesses: Gaming revenue was down 59% and Embedded revenue down 41%, showing that the companywide 9% increase was not broad-based.
- Investment and expenses: AMD was increasing operating expenses to fund AI and future products, which can limit near-term operating leverage.
- Supply and regulation: Accelerator availability, customer deployment timing, and export restrictions could change the pace of AI revenue.
How to read the result without overstating it
- A revenue beat is different from beating AMD’s own guidance midpoint; both comparisons should be labeled separately.
- Adjusted EPS of $0.69 and GAAP EPS of $0.16 measure different things and should not be blended.
- The $2.834 billion Data Center result is not equivalent to $2.834 billion of AI-chip sales.
- The $4.5 billion AI figure is forward guidance, not a reported quarterly total.
- “AI drove the quarter” is a reasonable interpretation of the Data Center and MI300 trends, but it remains an inference because the segment also includes EPYC CPUs.
Bottom line
AMD’s Q2 2024 was a solid but uneven quarter. Revenue and adjusted EPS edged past cited expectations, while Data Center revenue more than doubled and management raised its AI-chip forecast. Those developments strengthened AMD’s growth narrative, but sharp declines in Gaming and Embedded, continued Nvidia competition, and dependence on sustained AI deployment meant the report was evidence of progress—not proof of competitive parity or a guaranteed investment outcome.
