AMD’s October 2024 holiday promotion cut advertised prices on four regular Ryzen 9000 desktop processors by $30 to $50, while the company teased Ryzen 9000 X3D chips for November 7. The practical choice was whether to take a retailer’s discount on an available CPU or wait for an X3D model built around extra cache for gaming. AMD later announced two Ryzen 9000 X3D processors in January 2025; prices and availability have since become retailer- and date-dependent.
Which Ryzen 9000 CPUs did AMD discount?
PCWorld reported on October 21, 2024 that AMD’s early holiday promotion had started the previous day. It covered four regular Zen 5 desktop CPUs. AMD said it offered promotional pricing to channel partners, but the final street price was dynamic at retailers including Amazon and Newegg. The figures below are PCWorld’s maximum-discount examples, not a guarantee that every retailer listed or maintained those prices.
| Processor | Example price before promotion | Example promotional price | Example reduction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 5 9600X | $279 | $249 | $30 |
| Ryzen 7 9700X | $359 | $329 | $30 |
| Ryzen 9 9900X | $499 | $469 | $30 |
| Ryzen 9 9950X | $649 | $599 | $50 |
PCWorld reported no announced end date for the promotion. These are historical 2024 examples, not current quotes. Check the price and stock at the retailer before budgeting for a build. PCWorld’s October 2024 report includes AMD’s explanation of how the pricing reached retail.
What happened to the Ryzen 9000 X3D teaser?
In October 2024, AMD teased Ryzen 9000 X3D chips for November 7 but gave few product details. The subsequent official announcement came on January 6, 2025: AMD introduced the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D, with availability expected in the first quarter of 2025. The November date was the teaser’s stated date, not the later announcement’s expected shelf date.

AMD’s January announcement listed the two processors as follows. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance-test results.
| Model | Cores / threads | Maximum boost clock | Total cache | Default TDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 9 9950X3D | 16 / 32 | Up to 5.7 GHz | 144 MB | 170W |
| Ryzen 9 9900X3D | 12 / 24 | Up to 5.5 GHz | 140 MB | 120W |
AMD’s January 6, 2025 CES announcement gives the launch information and specifications. Leaked model expectations mentioned in the earlier coverage were not AMD-confirmed specifications and should not be treated as product facts.

What X3D changes, and what AMD’s claims do—and don’t—show
Ryzen X3D processors add stacked 3D V-Cache. AMD says its second-generation design places cache beneath the core complex die (CCD), bringing the Zen 5 cores closer to the cooling solution. The company says this arrangement is intended to enable higher clock speeds, lower temperatures and better performance than the previous generation.
Those are AMD’s design rationale and performance claims, not proof that an X3D chip will be faster in every game or workload. The October teaser and January announcement do not supply independent head-to-head benchmarks. For a purchase decision, look for tests of the specific games or applications you use, along with power and thermal measurements in comparable systems.

Should you buy a discounted regular Ryzen 9000 CPU or wait for X3D?
The discount alone cannot answer this: the promotion’s listed prices are from 2024, and X3D pricing and availability vary by date and retailer. Compare the complete cost and the work you expect the computer to do.
When a regular Ryzen 9000 may make more sense
- You need a CPU now and can verify a current, attractive street price.
- Your main workloads are not especially sensitive to the extra cache X3D is designed to provide, or you have independent testing showing that the regular model meets your needs.
- You can put the savings toward another part of the build that matters to your use, rather than paying a premium for a feature with no demonstrated benefit in your applications.
When waiting for an X3D model may be sensible
- Gaming is a priority and you want to compare independent results for the particular games and settings you use.
- You are willing to pay the actual current price, if any premium over a regular Ryzen 9000 model is justified by those results.
- Your build schedule allows you to wait for the desired model and its availability rather than buying around a historical promotion.
For productivity, gaming, power and thermals, avoid assuming that a higher cache figure or AMD’s stated goals settle the comparison. A useful comparison matches the same graphics card, memory configuration, game or application, resolution and power settings; otherwise, results may not translate to your build.

Does the Ryzen 9 9900X3D need a new motherboard?
No new socket is indicated: AMD lists the Ryzen 9 9900X3D as an AM5 processor. It supports PCI Express 5.0 and DDR5 memory, so include an AM5 motherboard and compatible DDR5 memory in the total build cost if you do not already own them. The available product information does not establish whether a particular existing motherboard will support the processor with its current firmware; confirm CPU support and any BIOS update requirement with the board maker for your exact model.

AMD’s live product page lists the 9900X3D with 12 cores, 24 threads, up to 5.5 GHz boost, a 4.4 GHz base clock, 128 MB of L3 cache, 120W default TDP, PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 support. It identifies the platform as AM5, the CPU die as 4 nm and the I/O die as 6 nm. The page listed a $599 price and showed the processor out of stock when accessed in 2026; that page status is a snapshot, not a promise of today’s retailer price or availability.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
The product page’s 128 MB L3 cache figure differs from the 140 MB total-cache figure in AMD’s 2025 announcement. They are differently labeled cache measures, so do not treat them as interchangeable. Check the specification label and date when comparing listings. AMD’s Ryzen 9 9900X3D product page provides the current product details and listing status.
