AMD says its next-generation EPYC server CPU, codenamed Venice, was ramping production on TSMC’s 2nm process in Taiwan in May 2026, with production in Arizona planned for the future. The announcement describes a manufacturing plan—not a disclosed purchase order for “AI chips.” Venice is a CPU that AMD says will help power AI infrastructure; it is not identified as an AI accelerator GPU.
What AMD said about Venice and Arizona
In a May 21, 2026 announcement, AMD said Venice was ramping on TSMC’s advanced 2nm process in Taiwan and that it planned to ramp production at TSMC’s Arizona fab in the future. AMD did not give an Arizona start date or say that production there had begun. AMD’s announcement identifies Venice as a next-generation EPYC processor for high-performance computing and data centers.

The headline’s “buy AI chips” framing needs care. AMD’s announcement is about manufacturing its EPYC CPU at TSMC, not a newly disclosed purchase contract. It provides no order quantity, contract value, or customer purchase details.
Why a server CPU matters to AI infrastructure
AMD says CPUs are increasingly important as AI workloads grow because they coordinate data movement and system functions such as networking, storage, security, and orchestration. In that sense, Venice is part of the computing foundation supporting AI systems. The announcement does not call Venice a dedicated AI accelerator or GPU.

TSMC’s Arizona fabs have different stages and timelines
Arizona’s semiconductor manufacturing plans involve multiple fabs and process technologies. The status of one facility should not be mistaken for confirmation that Venice is being made there.

| Fab 1 | N4 volume production | The Arizona Commerce Authority reported on July 16, 2026, that volume production had been underway since late 2024. Arizona Commerce Authority |
| Fab 2 | Planned 3nm production | The Arizona Commerce Authority reported it was expected to begin volume production in 2027. NIST’s project profile lists a second-half 2027 target. These are reported expectations, not confirmation of completion. Arizona Commerce Authority · NIST |
| Fab 3 | NIST lists A16 and 2nm among its planned technologies | NIST’s project profile says Fab 3 is expected by the end of the decade; this is a projected facility timeline, not a Venice production date. NIST |
| Venice production in Arizona | AMD described future plans to ramp production at TSMC’s Arizona fab | AMD gave no specific Arizona start date, fab number, or confirmation that the ramp had begun. AMD |
NIST’s project summary lists three planned leading-edge fabs and reports $6.6 billion in direct funding, a $5 billion available loan, and expected capital expenditure above $65 billion. These are figures for the TSMC Arizona project, not an AMD order or Venice-specific investment. NIST

What AMD’s earlier Arizona statement does—and does not—establish
At a TSMC Fab 21 milestone, AMD CEO Lisa Su said AMD expected to be a significant user of TSMC’s Arizona fabs and looked forward to building high-performance chips in the United States. That was a general statement about Arizona fab use; it did not name Venice, specify production volumes, or set a start date. TSMC’s Fab 21 milestone release
