AMD first rose above 40% in Steam’s CPU-vendor survey in July 2025, reaching 40.39%, while Intel remained ahead at about 59.5%. Valve’s later Windows-only table for August 2026 lists AMD at 45.52%. These figures describe Steam users in an optional survey—not global CPU sales or the share of every PC in use.
When did AMD first pass 40% on Steam?
AMD crossed the threshold in the July 2025 Steam Hardware & Software Survey. PC Gamer reported AMD at 40.39% and Intel at 59.5%, describing the result as AMD’s first time above 40% in Steam’s CPU-vendor category (PC Gamer). Tom’s Hardware and GamesRadar also reported the milestone (Tom’s Hardware; GamesRadar).
The milestone did not mean AMD had overtaken Intel: Intel still accounted for the larger share in that July reading.
What does Steam’s CPU share measure?
Valve describes the Steam Hardware & Software Survey as a monthly, optional and anonymous collection of hardware and software information from Steam customers (Steam Hardware & Software Survey; Valve survey FAQ). Its processor-vendor percentages therefore represent the surveyed Steam user base. They are not a census of all PC owners, CPU shipments, or AMD and Intel revenue.

- The world’s fastest gaming processor, built on AMD ‘Zen5’ technology and Next Gen 3D V-Cache.
- 8 cores and 16 threads, delivering +~16% IPC uplift and great power efficiency
- 96MB L3 cache with better thermal performance vs. previous gen and allowing higher clock speeds, up to 5.2GHz
- Drop-in ready for proven Socket AM5 infrastructure
- Cooler not included
Participation is voluntary, so the result is best read as a snapshot of the platform’s users rather than a definitive measure of the entire PC market. Month-to-month readings can change, and the latest comparison cited here is specifically from Valve’s Windows processor-vendor table.
Where AMD stands in the later Steam reading
Valve’s August 2026 Windows processor-vendor table lists AuthenticAMD at 45.52% and GenuineIntel at 54.47% (Valve’s survey table). That later snapshot keeps AMD above the 40% milestone, but Intel remains the larger vendor in the table.

Which Ryzen CPUs are associated with AMD’s gains?
Reporting links AMD’s growing presence among Steam gamers particularly to Ryzen processors with 3D V-Cache, including the Ryzen 7 9800X3D (Tom’s Hardware). These gaming-focused chips help explain why AMD is a prominent choice among PC gamers. However, the survey reports processor-vendor usage, not which specific CPU models caused a change; it cannot establish that one chip drove the overall shift or measure its performance.

How to interpret the milestone
- For Steam gamers: AMD’s share shows that its processors have become a substantial part of the platform’s surveyed PC base.
- For the wider CPU market: The figure is not interchangeable with sales, shipments, installed-base estimates or market revenue; those measures answer different questions.
- For comparing AMD with Intel: The July 2025 milestone and August 2026 Windows snapshot both put AMD above 40%, but Intel remained ahead in each reported comparison.
