Andreessen Horowitz and Optum Ventures also participated. Ambience said the financing brought its disclosed funding total to $100 million; the company did not disclose a valuation.
The investment was aimed at expanding an enterprise healthcare platform that combines ambient clinical documentation with coding, referrals, patient instructions and other workflow automation—not simply a transcription app or consumer chatbot.

Ambience said it would use the proceeds to accelerate its product roadmap, create dedicated teams for health-system partners, advance medical foundation-model capabilities and expand into additional healthcare-operations areas. The company also said it reserved an allocation for strategic partners, including Memorial Hermann, which invested after evaluating the platform in ambulatory, emergency and inpatient settings. Ambience’s announcement and the PR Newswire release provide the round details.
Ambience was founded in 2020 by Mike Ng and Nikhil Buduma and is headquartered in San Francisco, according to the company.

What Ambience’s “AI assistant” actually does
The 2024 product suite was organized around a clinician’s workflow:

By August 2026, Ambience’s public product page described a broader platform spanning pre-visit context, in-visit documentation and clinical guidance, post-visit work, coding, revenue integrity, inpatient workflows and nursing. Listed capabilities include patient summaries, Chart Chat for chart-aware questions, speaker attribution, translation, medication-order assistance, history-of-present-illness and assessment-and-plan generation, referral and discharge-note drafting, and assistance with ICD-10, evaluation-and-management, HCC, modifier, add-on-code and inpatient coding.
That expansion explains the company’s “AI operating system” language: the strategic pitch is a shared intelligence layer across several administrative and clinical workflows, rather than one note-generation feature.
Why investors saw a large healthcare-AI opportunity
Clinicians and health systems spend significant time on documentation, coding, data entry, referrals and patient communication. Reducing that work can create value through less after-hours charting, faster note completion, more clinician capacity, more consistent documentation and potentially fewer coding corrections.

Ambience’s 2024 announcement claimed an average 78% reduction in documentation time and at least a 5× return on investment for health systems. Those are company-reported figures, not a neutral market-wide study; the announcement does not establish a universal result for every specialty or organization.
Its current website reports additional company claims: 80% average utilization, 45% less charting time and $13,000 in annual revenue per clinician at St. Luke’s, which Ambience says was verified by AAPC and KLAS. These figures should be evaluated with the underlying definitions, baseline, sample, specialty mix and time period before being used in a financial model. Why Kleiner Perkins and OpenAI Startup Fund invested
The round reflects a broader bet on vertical AI: software built for a specific, high-value industry with specialized data, compliance requirements and workflow integration.
Healthcare has expensive administrative friction
Medical documentation must be accurate, structured and connected to the electronic health record. A plausible paragraph generated in isolation has little value if a clinician must re-enter it, correct unsupported statements or reconcile it with the chart.

Integration can be a competitive moat
Ambience’s 2024 materials cited integrations with Epic, Cerner, eClinicalWorks, athenahealth, Elation and AdvancedMD. Its current site says it works inside Epic workflows, including Hyperdrive and Haiku, using the Epic Ambient Module and native FHIR APIs to read from and write to the chart. Those are company claims that a prospective customer should verify during procurement.
When integration works, clinicians may avoid copy-and-paste steps, see patient context without changing applications and return documentation to the correct chart sections. Reaching that state still requires identity management, configuration, training, support, governance and change management.
OpenAI’s role should not be overstated
OpenAI Startup Fund was a co-lead investor. That does not establish that OpenAI operates Ambience, owns it, clinically endorses it or supplies every model used in every feature. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous coverage placed the investment alongside other bets by the funds on specialized AI applications, including legal-AI company Harvey.
Customers, buyers and commercial model
Disclosed 2024 customers included UCSF, Memorial Hermann Health System, John Muir Health, The Oncology Institute, GI Alliance, Midi Health and Eventus WholeHealth. The company was focused primarily on U.S. healthcare organizations and ambulatory specialties such as cardiology, oncology, pediatrics and ENT, while also supporting emergency and hospital-medicine workflows.

The economic buyer is generally a health-system executive, chief medical information officer, clinical-informatics team, revenue-cycle leader, IT and EHR-integration group, or physician-group executive. Privacy, security, compliance and clinical-governance stakeholders are part of the buying process because the software handles sensitive conversations and can influence documentation and coding workflows.
As of August 2026, Ambience’s public product pages direct prospects to “Book a Demo” rather than display a self-serve price. That makes the platform more naturally suited to enterprise procurement than to an individual clinician seeking a transparent monthly subscription. Contract terms, implementation charges, minimum volumes and module pricing are not publicly stated on the cited pages.

A buyer should compare EHR support, native write-back, mobile and inpatient operation, specialty coverage, coding controls, analytics, data portability and implementation staffing—not just a vendor’s claimed time savings.

Risks a funding announcement does not resolve
Accuracy and clinical responsibility
An AI-generated note can omit, misinterpret or invent a detail. Clinicians must review and finalize output. Coding suggestions cannot substitute for documentation that actually supports a diagnosis, evaluation-and-management level or billing code. Ambience should be treated as an assistant, not an autonomous diagnostician, treatment decision-maker or billing authority.
Privacy, consent and sensitive encounters
Ambient systems record highly sensitive conversations. A health system needs clear contractual and operational answers about patient notification and consent, audio retention and deletion, model-training use, business-associate terms, access controls, audit logs, storage geography, subprocessors and breach response. Workflows also need to cover interpreters, family members, minors and patients who decline recording.
Uneven performance across settings
Results in a routine outpatient visit may not transfer to an emergency department, inpatient rounds, operating room, psychiatry, oncology, pediatrics, multilingual encounters or noisy environments. Multiple speakers can be misattributed, and an English-language note does not by itself prove that an interpreted encounter was understood correctly.
Implementation, downtime and drift
Integration does not eliminate template design, identity and access management, clinician training, rollout sequencing, monitoring or support. Organizations also need a manual fallback for outages involving the AI service, network, authentication or EHR. Model updates and workflow changes can alter output quality after launch, so utilization alone is not an adequate success metric.

- Ambience’s valuation in the Series B.
- Current lifetime funding beyond the $100 million disclosed after the 2024 round.
- Customer count, data volume processed and detailed allocation of the $70 million.
- Public pricing and implementation-cost schedules.
- Independent methodology behind the 78% documentation-time and 5× ROI claims.
- The exact foundation model or models used for every feature.
- Long-term clinical-safety, retention and correction-rate results across specialties.
What a health-system buyer should measure
- Clinical accuracy: completeness, clinically meaningful correction rates, specialty performance and multi-speaker handling.
- Coding controls: ICD-10 substantiation, E/M and HCC support, audit trails and clear separation between suggestions and final billing decisions.
- Integration: local EHR compatibility, native write-back, single sign-on, patient-context launch and mobile or inpatient support.
- Deployment: pilot timeline, configuration resources, training, adoption support and utilization analytics.
- Security: HIPAA business-associate terms, encryption, retention and deletion, model-training policy, role-based access and incident response.
- Economics: per-clinician versus enterprise pricing, minimum volume, implementation fees, contract length and measured savings in a controlled pilot.
- Usability: draft-generation speed, editing burden, template customization and performance with accents, interpreters, interruptions and family members.
The Bottom Line
Ambience’s $70 million Series B was a significant vote of confidence in enterprise AI for healthcare administration, co-led by Kleiner Perkins and OpenAI Startup Fund on February 6, 2024. The investment supports an ambitious platform spanning documentation, coding and care workflows, but it does not prove clinical accuracy, guaranteed ROI or dependence on OpenAI technology. Those questions still require customer-specific validation, governance and a measured deployment.
