Amazon’s WorkingWell Program: What It Promised—and What Changed

Amazon’s WorkingWell combined exercise, body-mechanics guidance, mindfulness, and nutrition content. Its injury-prevention impact remains unproven publicly, amid OSHA findings and broader company safety changes.

Amazon announced WorkingWell on May 17, 2021, as a health and safety program for operations employees, with body-mechanics coaching, exercise and wellness content, mindfulness, and healthy-eating support. Amazon said it planned to make the program’s components available across its U.S. operations by the end of 2021 and aimed to reduce recordable incident rates by 50% by 2025. That was a company target, not a verified result attributable to WorkingWell. Later OSHA findings and Amazon’s own safety reports show why the program is best understood as one part of a larger, continuing debate over warehouse ergonomics, work design, injury reporting, and prevention.

What Amazon announced

Amazon described WorkingWell as an employee-developed health and safety initiative for people in its operations network. The company said U.S. pilots began in 2019. At the May 2021 announcement, Amazon reported that the program had expanded to 859,000 employees at 350 sites in North America and Europe, and said all U.S. operations sites would receive its components by the end of 2021. These were Amazon-reported rollout figures and a planned deadline; the announcement does not independently verify identical implementation at every site.

Amazon’s stated goal was a 50% reduction in recordable incident rates by 2025. The announcement did not specify a numerical baseline or a method for determining how much of any change WorkingWell caused. The target should not be mistaken for a result. Amazon’s 2021 launch announcement set out the scope and ambition.

What WorkingWell offered employees

WorkingWell was broader than a stretching routine or a mobile app. Amazon presented it as a collection of physical and mental wellness resources intended for use at work and at home.

Amazon said the program was developed with employees in its operations network, health and safety experts, and scientists. A company profile described input from hundreds of employees and work by global workplace health and safety staff, certified athletic-training expertise, and an app-development team. “Employee-designed” is Amazon’s description of that development process; it does not establish that employees controlled staffing, production targets, budgets, or implementation decisions. Amazon’s profile of the people behind WorkingWell describes the development effort and program elements.

The injury risks the program was meant to address

Operations work can involve frequent lifting and lowering, repetitive handling, long reaches, bending, twisting, and awkward postures. Heavy or poorly positioned packages and long work periods can add strain. Amazon’s 2021 announcement said musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)—including strains and sprains associated with repetitive motion—accounted for about 40% of its work-related injuries at that time. That figure was Amazon’s own characterization.

OSHA later described ergonomic risks at inspected Amazon facilities involving lifting frequency and package weight, awkward postures, twisting, bending, reaching, and long hours. Its findings concerned the work processes and hazards at specific facilities; they were not an evaluation of WorkingWell as a program. For employees, the distinction matters: education may help identify risk or encourage safer technique, but it cannot by itself remove repetitive demands, change a workstation, or reduce an excessive pace.

TRALT Office Chair Ergonomic Desk Chair with Lumbar Support Black, 1
  • High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
  • Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
  • Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
  • Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
  • Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching

What the pilot evidence does—and does not—show

Amazon said WorkingWell pilots reduced injuries and had a positive effect on employees’ everyday activities. The public launch announcement did not provide the pilot-site count, participant characteristics, injury counts before and after the intervention, a comparison group, follow-up duration, or adjustments for turnover, workload, seasonal peaks, or task mix. It also did not say whether participation was voluntary or whether the results were independently reviewed or published in a peer-reviewed study.

Those omissions do not prove the program had no benefit. They mean readers cannot use the public announcement to establish that WorkingWell caused an injury reduction. A persuasive assessment would need to distinguish changes in MSDs from changes in total injuries, examine lost-time injuries and employee reports of discomfort, and account for changes in workforce composition, automation, tasks, and reporting practices. The available public material does not answer all those questions for WorkingWell itself.

What OSHA found after the rollout

Recordkeeping findings in 2022

In December 2022, OSHA said it had found recordkeeping violations at six Amazon facilities and cited 14 violations related to recording or reporting some injuries and illnesses. These findings concern the facilities and records covered by OSHA’s actions; they do not, by themselves, establish a company-wide practice of concealing injuries. OSHA’s December 2022 announcement details the recordkeeping action.

Ergonomic findings in 2023

In 2023, OSHA announced citations and proposed penalties at multiple facilities after identifying ergonomic hazards, including risks from lifting, repetitive work, awkward postures, and extended work periods. The agency described high rates of musculoskeletal disorders at inspected sites. Additional announcements covered more facilities, including a Colorado Springs delivery station. These regulatory findings are a counterweight to a wellness-only account, but they are not a controlled test showing that WorkingWell succeeded or failed.

The 2024 corporate-wide ergonomics settlement

In December 2024, OSHA and Amazon entered a settlement requiring Amazon to maintain and improve an ergonomics program across facilities under federal OSHA jurisdiction. OSHA said the agreement would last two years, subject to early-termination provisions, and announced a $145,000 penalty. Requirements included risk assessments, annual program updates, site ergonomics leads, employee training and reporting channels, tracking program effectiveness, and possible OSHA monitoring inspections. The agreement also identified measures such as adjustable-height workstations, redesigned packing stations, conveyors, ergonomic mats, scanner harnesses, job rotation, and sortation changes. OSHA’s settlement announcement describes the terms.

Amazon separately said OSHA withdrew all but one of the ergonomic citations as part of the settlement. That is Amazon’s account of the outcome; it should be read alongside OSHA’s description of the agreement, rather than treated as a substitute for it. Amazon’s statement on the citations and settlement gives the company’s characterization.

Why wellness and injury prevention are not interchangeable

Stretching, mindfulness, nutrition information, and body-mechanics instruction may support employees’ well-being or help them prepare for work. They are different from controls that change exposure to a hazard. If workers repeatedly lift, reach, bend, or twist in a constrained space, the central prevention question is whether the job and equipment are redesigned—not only whether workers receive advice about movement.

  • Worker-facing wellness measures: Warmups, stretching, recovery guidance, mindfulness, healthy-eating information, and educational content.
  • Workplace and process controls: Adjusting work heights and package presentation, reducing awkward reaches and repetitive motion, redesigning stations, using equipment or automation, rotating tasks, and acting on worker reports.
  • Management and measurement: Reviewing staffing and scheduling, monitoring work pace and fatigue, investigating complaints and near misses, and maintaining accurate injury records.

A wellness app or kiosk could improve perceived well-being without reducing recordable injuries. Conversely, a lower injury rate alone does not show which intervention mattered. Training is one layer of safety; it cannot substitute for effective work design, reliable reporting, or appropriate controls on the underlying hazard.

How Amazon’s public safety approach broadened

Amazon’s later safety materials describe a wider portfolio than the original WorkingWell announcement. The company has highlighted ErgoPick, which is intended to keep more work in the ergonomic “power zone” between the shoulders and thighs; adjustable-height workstations; redesigned packing stations; job rotation; robotics such as Proteus and Cardinal; and Dragonfly, a digital employee safety-observation tool. Amazon has also described inspections, audits, process engineering, facility retrofits, vehicle and yard safety measures, and training.

In its 2023 report, Amazon said it had more than 9,000 safety professionals globally; its 2025 report said the number had risen to more than 11,000. These are company-reported staffing figures. The broader portfolio helps explain why it would be misleading to treat WorkingWell as a single, isolated intervention with a separately measured impact. Amazon’s safety overview describes its initiatives, while its later reports discuss broader injury and prevention efforts.

What Amazon’s later injury figures show

Amazon’s published figures indicate improvement in company-wide rates, but they do not isolate WorkingWell’s contribution. Amazon describes its Recordable Incident Rate (RIR) as covering work-related injuries requiring more than basic first aid, and its Lost Time Incident Rate (LTIR) as covering injuries that require time away from work. The figures below are Amazon’s reports about its broader operations, not independent proof that the 2021 program caused the changes.

Report Amazon-reported result Important qualification
2023 report Global RIR improved 30% over four years; global LTIR improved 60%. For U.S. general warehousing in 2023, RIR was 6.5 and LTIR was 1.1. Amazon said MSDs were about 57% of recordable injuries. Company-reported figures. The 2023 report’s global comparisons and U.S. warehousing figures cover different scopes; they do not identify WorkingWell’s effect.
2024 report Global RIR improved 34% over five years; global LTIR improved 65%. Company-reported broader-network rates, not a WorkingWell-specific evaluation.
2025 report Global RIR improved 43% and global LTIR improved 70% since 2019. Company-reported changes since 2019; they do not establish that WorkingWell caused the improvement.

Rates can change for multiple reasons, including task mix, automation, hiring and turnover, workload, medical protocols, and reporting practices. OSHA’s recordkeeping findings make the last factor especially relevant. The company’s reported improvements and the regulator’s findings address different measures and periods; neither alone answers how much WorkingWell contributed.

Is WorkingWell still operating as a distinct program?

Amazon’s 2025 safety report still refers to WorkingWell as a safety and training program. However, the public materials cited here do not establish its exact scope, enrollment, participation, or standalone injury impact in 2026. The available evidence supports describing it as a 2021 launch that became part of Amazon’s broader safety and ergonomics story—not claiming that its original form remains unchanged or universally available today.
