A separate Shenzhen logistics facility, the Global Warehousing and Distribution (GWD) warehouse, opened to sellers on April 15, 2026. Amazon’s announcements describe a wider seller-services strategy, not a reversal of its China strategy.
Did Amazon announce a new innovation center in Shenzhen?
No. Amazon Global Selling announced its Asia-Pacific Innovation Center in Qianhai, Shenzhen, on December 12, 2023. Amazon described it as its first innovation center, intended to explore cross-border ecommerce innovation and support sellers. A Shenzhen government-hosted report also covered the launch (Shenzhen Government Online, December 14, 2023).
Amazon’s current center page describes the facility as an exchange and incubation base for cross-border ecommerce innovation. It highlights “艾拉小屋,” a product-experience space showcasing products associated with cross-border ecommerce (Amazon Global Selling China; page dated May 15, 2026).
What the innovation center is for
Amazon’s 2023 announcement outlined work in product innovation, brand development, digital operations, green development, and new business models. The later center page emphasizes product showcases and engagement with sellers. These descriptions make it a seller-facing innovation and exchange facility—not a warehouse or a consumer shopping site (Amazon Global Selling China, December 12, 2023).

What is Amazon’s Shenzhen GWD warehouse?
GWD stands for Global Warehousing and Distribution. Amazon announced its first Shenzhen GWD warehouse on December 4, 2025, initially saying it was planned to open to sellers in March 2026. Amazon subsequently announced that it opened on April 15, 2026 (Amazon Global Selling China, December 4, 2025; Amazon Global Selling China, April 15, 2026).
Unlike the innovation center, GWD is a logistics service. Amazon describes it as bulk warehousing and distribution that covers customs clearance, cross-border transportation, and inventory allocation, connected to its global Fulfillment by Amazon network. At the time of the April 2026 opening announcement, the Shenzhen warehouse supported shipments to Amazon fulfillment centers in the United States. Amazon said it planned to expand to other regions and destination markets; those future plans should not be read as capabilities already available from this warehouse.

What Amazon says its China seller strategy is
Amazon’s December 2025 announcement called its broader initiative “Next Generation Global Selling” and set out four priorities for 2026 (Amazon Global Selling China, December 4, 2025):
- AI-driven product innovation
- Expansion into new markets
- Supply-chain development
- Local support
The announcement does not characterize these priorities or the Shenzhen warehouse as a retreat, reversal, or “restrategizing” in China. It presents them as plans to develop services for sellers using Amazon’s global marketplaces.

What Amazon’s seller-growth figures do—and don’t—show
In the same December 2025 announcement, Amazon reported growth figures drawn from its own 2025 data. These are company-reported statistics, not independently audited findings in the announcement:
- Chinese sellers using Amazon’s global marketplaces had more than 15% sales growth in mature markets and more than 30% in emerging markets.
- The number of newly listed product selections by Chinese sellers grew nearly 25% year over year.
- The number of Chinese sellers with sales above $2 million, $5 million, or $8 million grew by more than 20%; the number above $10 million grew by nearly 30%.
Amazon did not establish that either Shenzhen facility caused these results. The figures therefore describe the company’s reported seller performance, not the measured effect of the innovation center or GWD warehouse.

What Chinese sellers should take from the warehouse opening
For sellers considering GWD, the practical distinction is where work happens and which destination markets are supported. Amazon’s description places GWD at the origin side of the supply chain, where inventory can be warehoused and distributed with customs and cross-border transport services. The April 2026 announcement specifically named US fulfillment centers as supported destinations at launch.
The announcements do not provide a full comparison of GWD’s costs against other shipping or warehousing approaches. Sellers evaluating the service would need to compare inventory location and consolidation, supported destinations, customs and transport scope, fees, and operational flexibility using the terms available to them. Amazon’s plans to add markets are not a substitute for confirming current destination support.
