It is not final: as of October 7, 2026, the court’s approval is still pending. Some eligible customers may receive a payment, but eligibility depends on specific transactions, and the proposed terms do not promise the same amount to everyone.
What the Amazon return-policy lawsuit alleges
In re: Amazon Return Policy Litigation, No. 2:23-cv-01372-JNW, is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Plaintiffs allege that Amazon sometimes failed to issue refunds, issued incorrect or late refunds, or later charged customers for products they had returned. A court discovery order describes the lawsuit and the plaintiffs’ allegations; it does not establish that Amazon violated the law. Amazon denies wrongdoing.
The settlement notice says, “The Court has not made any finding that Amazon has engaged in any wrongdoing or misconduct of any kind, or is liable in any way.” The proposed agreement remains subject to final approval. The official settlement website lists a final approval hearing for March 16, 2027, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. Check the official settlement website for current status and notices.
Who may be included in the proposed settlement
The proposed class definition is narrower than everyone who has returned an Amazon purchase. It generally concerns people who initiated a return or requested a refund for a physical product sold through Amazon.com, bought and recorded as received in the United States, after September 5, 2017, and before class data is prepared. The transaction must also involve an alleged refund problem: no refund, a late or incorrect refund, or a later incorrect charge for the returned product.

The agreement divides eligible transactions between Subclass A and Subclass B and contains exclusions. Whether a particular person or transaction qualifies depends on Amazon’s records and the settlement’s terms. Review the official settlement FAQ and notice rather than assuming that a return problem makes you eligible.
How much money is proposed, and how would payments work?
The filed 2026 settlement agreement proposes a non-reversionary common fund of $309.5 million. That is the headline amount, not a guaranteed payment to every customer. The agreement allocates 92.7% of the net settlement fund to Subclass A and 7.3% to Subclass B.

- Subclass A: Proposed payments are calculated from unpaid transaction amounts, plus a proportional amount for potential prejudgment interest. Members are to be paid automatically without submitting a claim form.
- Subclass B: Members must submit an eligible claim and establish, on a “more likely than not” standard, that they belong to the class and are entitled to payment.
The agreement also describes a separate refund process: as of December 1, 2025, it reported approximately $570 million in refunds issued and approximately $34 million remaining unpaid, using eligible refund data through September 2025. Those figures are not additional guaranteed payments from the $309.5 million common fund; they relate to the separate process described in the agreement.
Possible payment methods listed in the agreement include PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, ACH, prepaid card, Amazon credit, or check, depending on the member’s preference. The proposed terms do not establish a fixed payment amount for each person or a guaranteed payment date.

What to do before the deadline
The official settlement site currently lists December 1, 2026, as the deadline to file a claim, exclude yourself, or object to or comment on the settlement. Confirm the deadline and instructions on the official site before acting, since dates or procedures may change.
- Review the official notice and FAQ: Go to returnsettlement.com and read the FAQ to understand the proposed class definition, exclusions, and subclass rules.
- Check your transaction: Determine whether the purchase and refund or return issue fit the settlement terms. Do not rely only on having returned an item.
- Follow the instructions for your subclass: Subclass A payments are proposed to be automatic; Subclass B requires an eligible claim form. Use the official site to identify the applicable process and submit any required materials by the listed deadline.
- Choose a response if needed: The site provides instructions for filing a claim, excluding yourself, or objecting to or commenting on the settlement. These are different actions; read the notice to understand their consequences.
Non-monetary changes in the agreement
The proposed agreement also includes time-limited return-processing measures subject to its conditions. These include monitoring processing timelines, troubleshooting refund-processing issues, reprocessing certain approved refunds that remain incomplete after 30 days, and notifying customers when Amazon approves or denies certain returns.

This is not the separate Amazon Prime settlement
The return-policy case is separate from the Federal Trade Commission’s Amazon Prime enrollment and cancellation case. The FTC’s 2026 update concerns that other action, with different allegations and payment rules; it does not describe this return-policy settlement. See the FTC’s update on the Prime settlement.
