Amazon’s “Project Dawn” Email Leak Preceded Confirmed 16,000-Role Cuts

A premature Amazon email tied to “Project Dawn” preceded the company’s confirmation of approximately 16,000 affected roles. Here’s what the leak established—and what it did not.

Amazon confirmed approximately 16,000 affected roles on January 28, 2026, one day after an internal calendar invitation and draft email tied to “Project Dawn” appeared prematurely. The leaked message was a communications error that exposed the planned announcement early; it was not, by itself, a complete list of people losing their jobs.

The January cuts followed Amazon’s announcement of approximately 14,000 corporate-role reductions in October 2025. Those separate announcements amount to roughly 30,000 corporate roles, but they should not be described as one single round or as an exact count of employees terminated.

What happened with Amazon’s “Project Dawn” email?

On the evening of January 27, 2026, Amazon employees saw a calendar invitation titled along the lines of “Send Project Dawn email.” The invitation and an associated draft communication appeared before the company’s planned announcement and were canceled shortly afterward.

According to reporting by Reuters and Bloomberg, the draft referred to “impacted colleagues” in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. It was attributed to Colleen Aubrey, an Amazon senior vice president associated with AWS, and referred to a separate message from human-resources chief Beth Galetti that apparently had not yet been sent.

Screenshots and discussion then circulated through internal channels and social media. The premature message created confusion and anxiety among employees who saw it, particularly because Amazon had already announced a significant corporate workforce reduction in October.

On January 28, Amazon formally announced that approximately 16,000 roles across the company would be affected.

Timeline of the workforce reductions

Date What happened
October 28, 2025 Amazon announced an expected reduction of approximately 14,000 corporate roles and said it would continue looking for efficiency opportunities.
January 27, 2026 A calendar invitation and draft communication connected to “Project Dawn” appeared prematurely and was later canceled.
January 28, 2026 Amazon officially announced approximately 16,000 affected roles across Amazon.

Amazon’s two announcements therefore represent approximately 30,000 corporate roles in total. That is a calculation across two separate restructuring actions, not an announcement that Amazon eliminated exactly 30,000 people in January 2026.

What does “Project Dawn” mean?

Publicly available evidence supports describing “Project Dawn” as an internal label or codename associated with the January restructuring communication. Amazon did not present Project Dawn as the formal public name of a separately defined, company-wide program.

The leaked invitation established that a workforce-reduction communication was planned. It did not establish the program’s complete scope, identify every affected employee, or prove that everyone who saw the invitation was a target.

Receiving—or not receiving—the premature calendar invitation was not equivalent to receiving an individual termination notice. The message was distributed ahead of schedule and was seen beyond its intended audience.

How many Amazon jobs were affected?

Amazon’s official figures are:

  • January 2026: approximately 16,000 affected roles across Amazon.
  • October 2025: approximately 14,000 corporate roles.
  • Combined announced total: approximately 30,000 corporate roles across the two rounds.

The word roles matters. It is more precise than saying 16,000 or 30,000 employees were immediately fired. A role reduction can involve elimination, reassignment, attrition, or internal movement, and the cited announcements do not provide a complete employee-by-employee accounting.

These figures also concern corporate roles. They should not be presented as reductions to Amazon’s entire global workforce, including warehouse, delivery, and other operational workers.

Which teams and countries were involved?

The leaked communication specifically named impacted colleagues in the United States, Canada, and Costa Rica. Its connection to Colleen Aubrey and the circulation of the message among AWS employees made AWS especially prominent in early coverage.

That does not prove AWS was the only organization affected or the sole target. Amazon’s formal announcement described the January changes as affecting roles across Amazon, and the cited public statement did not provide a complete division-by-division breakdown.

The public record also does not provide a complete country-by-country total or a full list of affected teams. Employees in different countries may receive different notices and timelines because employment law, consultation requirements, severance rules, and benefit arrangements vary by jurisdiction.

Why did Amazon say it was cutting roles?

Amazon’s stated rationale focused on organizational efficiency rather than a claim that artificial intelligence directly replaced every affected position. In its January announcement, Amazon said it was reducing management layers, increasing ownership, removing bureaucracy, and moving faster for customers.

The company also said it would reallocate resources toward strategic areas while continuing to hire and invest in selected functions. In its October announcement, Amazon said it intended to operate more leanly and expected to continue identifying opportunities to remove layers and improve efficiency.

Did AI cause Amazon’s layoffs?

The available evidence does not support saying that AI replaced all 16,000 roles.

AI is relevant context: Amazon is investing heavily in AI and automation, and those investments can influence how companies design teams, combine responsibilities, and allocate capital. But Amazon’s official explanation for the January cuts emphasized layers, bureaucracy, ownership, speed, and strategic resource allocation.

Unless Amazon or reliable reporting identifies particular functions as eliminated because of automation, “AI layoffs” is an interpretation—not a verified role-by-role explanation. The more accurate description is that Amazon carried out a broad corporate restructuring while continuing to invest in selected growth areas, including areas related to technology and AI.

What support did affected employees receive?

Amazon said most U.S.-based employees would generally have:

  • 90 days to search for another internal Amazon role;
  • severance pay if they did not find another role or chose not to pursue one;
  • outplacement services;
  • health-insurance benefits, where applicable; and
  • other transition support.

The 90-day internal-search period should not be treated as a universal rule for every employee. Amazon said international timing would vary according to local and country-level requirements, and employees in Canada, Costa Rica, and other jurisdictions may have different notice, consultation, severance, and benefits arrangements.

For affected workers, the practical first step is to review the individual notice and use Amazon’s stated outplacement and internal-placement resources before paying for private career services.

What remains unknown?

  • The complete team-by-team breakdown of the approximately 16,000 roles.
  • The exact number of employees affected, as distinct from roles.
  • Complete country-by-country totals.
  • The full distribution list for the premature message.
  • Whether every reference to “Project Dawn” covered the entire January reduction.
  • Whether any additional reductions were planned under the same internal label.

The January announcement confirms the workforce reduction that the leaked message foreshadowed. It does not publicly establish a permanent Project Dawn program or confirm additional future rounds.
