Amazon’s official Prime Day AirPods discounts were reported on July 16, 2024, during the two-day Prime Day event. The headline price was real, but it applied to the oldest and least expensive model in the group: second-generation AirPods.

For a buyer choosing among the deals, the cheapest option was best only if price and an open fit mattered more than noise cancellation, USB-C charging, or newer hardware. The AirPods Pro 2 offered the strongest feature upgrade, while AirPods Max were a separate over-ear category rather than an alternative to basic earbuds.
Apple’s lineup has since moved on. Its current comparison page lists newer models including AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2, so the 2024 prices should not be reused as current shopping claims.

The prices and stated savings were reported by AppleInsider. A separate 9to5Mac deal report broadly confirmed the AirPods 2, AirPods 3, and AirPods Pro 2 pricing.
What the $69 AirPods deal included
The $69 product was AirPods 2nd generation with a Lightning Charging Case. The discount was presented as $60 off a listed $129 price.
AirPods 2 provide basic Apple wireless-earbud features such as automatic pairing with Apple devices and Siri access. Their open design can be comfortable for people who dislike silicone tips or a sealed ear canal.

AirPods 2 made sense for someone who already owned Lightning cables and wanted inexpensive Apple earbuds for calls, music, and general use. They were a weaker choice for flights, noisy offices, commuting, or anyone trying to standardize on USB-C.
AirPods 3 cost more but remained open-fit
AirPods 3 were discounted to $119.99, compared with the $129 early-sale price reported on July 9. The model offered a newer design and newer hardware than AirPods 2, while retaining an open fit. The cited Prime Day configuration used a Lightning Charging Case.
The extra cost over AirPods 2 was easier to justify for buyers who wanted a newer open-style AirPods design and longer battery life but did not want silicone ear tips or active noise cancellation. It was less compelling for someone whose only requirement was the lowest possible price.

Why AirPods Pro 2 were the stronger feature upgrade
AirPods Pro 2 with a USB-C charging case were listed at $168.99, with an advertised $80 saving. The early Prime Day coverage on July 9 put them at approximately $169, so their price changed little between the early-sale and official-event coverage.
For many buyers, the additional money over AirPods 2 bought a substantially different experience:
- Active Noise Cancellation: useful on planes, public transport, and in busy workplaces.
- Transparency mode: lets outside sound through without removing the earbuds.
- Adaptive Audio: automatically balances noise control and awareness.
- USB-C charging: more convenient for buyers already using USB-C cables.
- Silicone ear tips: provide a more secure seal and fit than open earbuds for many users.
Apple’s feature comparison shows why these models should not be treated as interchangeable. Pro earbuds may be the better value for noisy environments, but they are not automatically better for someone who dislikes in-ear tips.
AirPods Max were headphones, not earbuds
AirPods Max fell to $394.99 from a listed $549 price in the reported Prime Day deal. AppleInsider described that price as its lowest tracked price, but “record low” claims should be understood as source-specific rather than a universal, independently verified price-history result.

AirPods Max are over-ear headphones with Apple ecosystem integration and noise-control features. Their larger design can suit home listening, travel, or buyers who prefer headphones that do not sit inside the ear. They are also substantially heavier, less portable, and more expensive than the earbud models.
The 2024 deal covered the original AirPods Max, not the newer AirPods Max 2 now shown on Apple’s comparison page. The $394.99 price should therefore not be used to describe the current model.

Amazon’s early Prime Day coverage published July 9, 2024, listed AirPods 2 at $69, AirPods 3 at $129, AirPods Pro 2 at $169, and AirPods Max at $399. The official-event coverage published July 16 listed AirPods 3 at $119.99 and AirPods Max at $394.99, while the other headline prices were broadly unchanged.
This difference matters because “Prime Day price” can refer to more than one sale window. The $69 AirPods 2 price appeared in both periods, but the other models moved slightly before the main event.

Were the $69 AirPods a good deal?
Yes, for a narrowly defined buyer. They were a reasonable choice for someone who wanted genuine Apple earbuds at the lowest price, preferred an open fit, already used Lightning cables, and did not need noise cancellation.
No, if the buyer wanted modern connectivity or advanced features. The AirPods 2 lacked ANC, Transparency mode, USB-C, and newer-generation capabilities. A slightly more expensive newer model could offer better long-term value, especially if the buyer planned to keep the earbuds for several years.
The central mistake would be judging the deal only by its discount. A $60 saving does not make an older product the best value for every user. The right comparison is between the features needed and the price difference between models.

How the 2024 models compared with Apple’s current lineup
Apple’s current comparison page lists newer products alongside the older models from the 2024 sale. During the research period, Apple listed AirPods 4 with ANC at $179, AirPods Pro 3 at $249, and AirPods Max 2 at $549. Those are Apple prices, not evidence of current Amazon pricing.
For a current purchase, buyers should compare live retailer pricing against these newer models rather than search for an expired $69 headline. The relevant current alternatives include:
- AirPods 4 with ANC for buyers who want an open-fit design with noise cancellation.
- AirPods Pro 3 for buyers who want current premium in-ear features and accept silicone tips.
- AirPods Max 2 for buyers specifically seeking over-ear headphones.
To check Amazon’s live price, stock, Prime eligibility, seller, and condition, use its current AirPods search page. Availability and pricing can change by model, color, case configuration, and seller.
What to check before buying an AirPods deal
- Confirm the exact generation and charging-case connector.
- Check whether the listing is new, renewed, used, or refurbished.
- Review the seller, warranty, return policy, and delivery date.
- Make sure the displayed price applies to the selected color and configuration.
- Do not assume a third-party or renewed listing is equivalent to a new Apple unit.
- Check compatibility if using Android or another non-Apple device. AirPods work as Bluetooth headphones outside Apple’s ecosystem, but Apple says some functionality may be limited.
Most importantly, do not treat the July 2024 prices as current offers. The original “from $69” headline was accurate for that Prime Day event, but it described a specific older model and a sale that has ended.
