Amazon had not confirmed the timing when GeekWire reported the news, citing Reuters and Bloomberg. Six days later, Amazon announced approximately 16,000 corporate job cuts, making the forecast substantially accurate. The phrase “next week” referred to the week beginning January 26; it is historical, not a current prediction.
What was reported on January 22
Reuters and Bloomberg separately reported that Amazon was preparing another round of corporate cuts that could begin the following week. GeekWire said it had asked Amazon for comment; at publication, the company had not publicly confirmed the timing. The original report did not establish a final number of jobs, a complete list of affected teams, or which locations would be involved. GeekWire’s January 22 report is best read as advance reporting about planned cuts, not as Amazon’s formal announcement.
“Begin” can also mean different things in a large restructuring: internal planning, notifying employees, filing required notices, or an employee’s last working day. Those dates do not necessarily coincide, and notices may roll out across teams over time.
What Amazon announced six days later
On January 28, Amazon announced approximately 16,000 corporate job cuts. The announcement followed about 14,000 layoffs announced in October 2025. Taken together, the two rounds represented roughly 30,000 corporate positions, though announcement dates, implementation schedules, and counts can differ across business units and locations. The Associated Press described the January action as Amazon’s second major mass-layoff round in three months. The AP’s report on the announcement details the company’s stated rationale and support for affected U.S. employees.

The January announcement did not initially identify every affected division or location. Later reporting associated reductions across the broader restructuring with software engineering, corporate support, commercial functions, legal and tax, advertising sales, core technology, gaming, and robotics. That list does not mean every team experienced cuts in the same round or in equal measure.
What Amazon said about the reasons
Amazon described the restructuring as an effort to reduce management layers, increase ownership, remove bureaucracy, and redirect resources toward priorities it considered important. The company also said it would continue hiring in selected areas. These are Amazon’s stated organizational reasons; they do not establish why any particular employee’s position was eliminated.

AI is part of the wider workforce discussion, but the connection needs precision. In June 2025, CEO Andy Jassy said productivity gains from generative AI could reduce Amazon’s corporate workforce over time. That broader expectation does not show that AI directly caused each January 2026 job loss. Jassy had also framed the cuts in terms of excess management layers and bureaucracy rather than as a simple case of AI replacing workers. GeekWire’s report recounts that context.
How the January cuts fit Amazon’s wider reductions
Amazon had eliminated approximately 27,000 positions across multiple rounds in 2023, according to GeekWire. Comparing that figure with the approximately 30,000 corporate positions announced in October 2025 and January 2026 requires care: the rounds span different periods, and totals can vary depending on whether they count announced positions or completed departures and which employee groups are included. The January announcement was a major corporate reduction, but a claim that it was definitively Amazon’s largest layoff depends on the comparison method.

The large 2025–2026 rounds were primarily corporate cuts. Amazon’s total workforce also includes warehouse, delivery, logistics, retail, and other operational employees; the approximately 16,000 figure should not be presented as a company-wide count of every kind of worker.
What happened after the January announcement
Targeted reductions in 2026
Later reporting described additional, smaller reductions rather than another publicly announced round on the same scale as January. Reuters reported on July 22, 2026, that Amazon cut jobs in its artificial-general-intelligence organization. Amazon said it was sharpening focus on initiatives important to customers, which included eliminating some roles in parts of the AGI organization; the scope was not publicly specified. The Reuters dispatch republished by Yahoo Finance reported the cuts.

Washington state notice covering 57 positions
A Washington WARN notice covered 57 Amazon positions across teams and locations in Seattle and Bellevue. GeekWire’s review identified 16 software engineers among the roles, alongside product, creative-marketing, investigations, risk, director, and senior-manager positions. Employees were notified in May and early June, and the positions were scheduled to end in August. The notice reflects a set of later organizational changes; it is not evidence that those 57 jobs were part of the January announcement. The GeekWire account of the filing links the state context, and Washington’s Employment Security Department is at esd.wa.gov.
WARN notices are jurisdiction- and location-specific. They are not a complete company-wide tally: filing requirements, employer entities, site arrangements, and notice timing affect what appears in public records. A notice date also does not necessarily equal an individual employee’s final workday. Third-party trackers can help locate notices, but their totals should be checked against the relevant state records before being treated as definitive.

What affected U.S. employees were offered
Amazon said U.S. employees affected by the January cuts had 90 days to look for another role internally. Those who did not move to another position were offered severance, outplacement services, and health-insurance benefits, according to the AP’s report. Those terms should not be assumed to apply identically outside the United States: an employee’s location, employing entity, contract, and local law can affect the support and process available.
