In January 2026, it announced that it would close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores, convert some locations to Whole Foods Market, and keep testing other store concepts. Its clearest brick-and-mortar growth plan is now Whole Foods: Amazon reported more than 550 locations and said it plans to open more than 100 additional stores over the next few years. Grocery delivery remains part of the strategy, too.
What Amazon’s grocery strategy looks like now
Amazon’s physical-grocery strategy has pivoted from trying to scale its Amazon-branded Fresh and Go stores to expanding Whole Foods while experimenting with other formats. The company says it has not yet found the right customer experience and economics to expand Amazon Fresh and Go broadly. In its May 12, 2026 update, Amazon stated: “While we’ve seen encouraging signals in our Amazon-branded physical grocery stores, we haven’t yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion.” Amazon’s announcement was first made in January 2026 and later updated.
That is a change from Amazon’s 2023 position. In its 2022 Annual Report letter, filed in 2023, the company described grocery as a large opportunity and said it was looking for a mass-market format it could expand broadly. Amazon argued that much grocery shopping still took place in physical stores and described Amazon Fresh as an experiment in finding the right format. Its historical letter called the U.S. grocery market an $800 billion segment and said households shopped three to four times per week; those are Amazon’s 2023 figures, not current market measurements. What is closing—and what remains available
Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores
Amazon said it would close its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores. Some locations are to be converted into Whole Foods Market stores; the announcement does not say every closing location will be converted. The decision applies to the physical stores, not automatically to the online service.

Amazon Fresh online
Amazon says Amazon Fresh will continue online in areas where it is available. That is not a guarantee of service in every location; customers need to check local availability through Amazon.
Amazon Go’s retail technology
Amazon Go stores used Just Walk Out technology, but the closure announcement does not mean Amazon is abandoning that technology. Amazon describes it as retail technology used by third-party retailers as well as Amazon. The business decision addressed the Amazon Go store format.

Whole Foods is the main announced store-expansion plan
Amazon’s May 2026 update reported more than 550 Whole Foods Market locations and plans for more than 100 additional stores over the next few years. These are planned openings, not stores already operating. Amazon also said Whole Foods sales had grown more than 40% since its 2017 acquisition of the chain; that growth figure is company-reported.
Whole Foods remains the established physical grocery option in Amazon’s portfolio, with a focus on natural and organic groceries. Amazon has also been growing a smaller neighborhood version of the brand called Whole Foods Market Daily Shop. At the time of its May 2026 update, Amazon reported five Daily Shop locations and plans for five more by the end of 2026. Those additional locations were a plan, not a completed count.

Other store concepts are still experiments
Amazon says it will continue testing formats rather than treating every concept as a nationwide rollout. Its May 2026 announcement described Amazon Grocery, launched alongside Whole Foods Market in Chicago, and a “store within a store” at the Whole Foods Market in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, where customers can shop for Amazon groceries and household essentials. The company also said it was exploring a physical supercenter format. It did not provide a supercenter opening timeline or operating details, so that concept should be understood as exploration—not a confirmed opening plan.
Amazon’s experiments reflect different shopping tasks: a Whole Foods visit for a grocery shop, a Daily Shop visit for neighborhood convenience, or an Amazon Grocery and household-essentials assortment. The company has not published comparable store-level economics or independent customer-satisfaction measures for these formats.

Delivery is a major part of Amazon’s grocery business
Amazon is also investing in online grocery. In Andy Jassy’s 2025 Letter to Shareholders, published in 2026, he reported more than $150 billion in gross sales for Amazon’s grocery business in 2025 and described Amazon as the second-largest U.S. grocer on that basis. This is a broad grocery-business figure, not physical-store revenue alone. Read the 2025 shareholder letter.
The same letter reported that perishable grocery sales through Same-Day Delivery had grown more than 40 times since the service was introduced, and that nine of the ten most-ordered items in areas with perishable Same-Day Delivery were fresh groceries. Both are company-reported figures scoped to the areas where the service is available. In August 2025, Amazon said fresh groceries were available through Same-Day Delivery in more than 1,000 cities and towns and set a target of more than 2,300 by year-end. A later Amazon update referred to online grocery service in more than 5,000 cities and towns and described fresh Same-Day launches in 2026. Those figures have different dates and scopes: the broader 5,000-plus city count does not establish that perishable groceries are available for same-day delivery in all those areas.

In August 2025, Amazon described Same-Day orders as including produce, dairy, meat, baked goods, and frozen foods alongside a wider online assortment. At that time, it said Prime delivery was free above $25 in most cities and described fees for smaller Prime orders and non-Prime customers. Those were the terms reported in the 2025 announcement, not a guarantee of current local pricing. Check the delivery options and fees shown for your address before ordering. Why Amazon is not leaving grocery
The store closures mark a retreat from two physical formats that Amazon says were not ready for large-scale expansion, not an exit from grocery. Whole Foods is the clearest announced path for physical-store growth, while delivery and smaller-scale format tests provide other ways to serve grocery shoppers. Amazon’s reported 2025 grocery sales figure also shows that its grocery business includes more than the stores being closed.
There is an important historical contrast in Amazon’s view of assortment. In its 2022 Annual Report letter, filed in 2023, the company said it offered more than three million items in certain center-aisle categories, compared with a typical supermarket’s 30,000 in those same categories. That was Amazon’s historical comparison for specified categories—not a comparison of total store assortments—and it does not establish that a physical supercenter with that breadth is coming.
