What changed in Amazon’s free-shipping minimum?
In August 2023, Amazon confirmed it was testing a $35 free-shipping minimum for non-Prime customers in some U.S. regions, up from $25. The test grouped ZIP codes into regions, so customers in different nearby areas could see different thresholds. TechCrunch reported Amazon’s confirmation; The Associated Press reported that Seattle customers had a $25 minimum while nearby Bellevue customers had a $35 minimum. That was a 2023 example, not a current map of which locations receive which terms.

Amazon’s current U.S. customer guidance states that nonmembers can qualify for free delivery on eligible orders of at least $35. It does not clarify whether the regional variation reported in 2023 still applies, so the checkout terms for your address are the practical guide.
How to check whether your order qualifies
- Check the delivery destination. Set your address or ZIP code on Amazon so the product page and checkout show terms for your location.
- Review each item’s eligibility. Amazon’s $35 guidance applies when items are eligible and fulfilled and shipped by Amazon; reaching the dollar threshold by itself is not enough.
- Confirm the checkout total and delivery estimate. Amazon estimates five to eight days for qualifying non-Prime free-delivery orders in its current U.S. guidance. Verify the estimate and any shipping charge shown for your order.
Amazon’s current terms are detailed in its U.S. free-delivery guidance. The estimate and threshold are guidance, not a guarantee that every item or delivery address qualifies.

Should you get Prime to avoid a shipping charge?
Prime is optional: Amazon’s current guidance describes the nonmember free-delivery route as well. Amazon lists U.S. Prime at $14.99 per month or $139 per year, and says more than 300 million items are available with free Prime delivery. Amazon also reports that U.S. Prime members saved an average of over $500 on delivery during the prior year; that is Amazon’s own figure, not an independent savings study. For a personal-finance decision, compare the membership fee with your likely use of eligible delivery and the value you place on Prime’s other benefits. Do not treat the stated average savings as a prediction of what you will save: your result depends on what you order and how often.

Why did Amazon raise the minimum?
Amazon has not publicly established a specific reason for the 2023 test in the sources available here. TechCrunch discussed lower shipping costs and encouraging Prime membership as possible interpretations, but those were not confirmed by Amazon. The company’s spokesperson Kristina Pressentin told the Associated Press in 2023: “We continually evaluate our offerings and make adjustments based on those assessments.”
