The stories overlapped in time, but the available reporting does not show that they involved the same workers or shared a cause.
What changed in Amazon’s return-to-office policy?
Amazon’s office policy tightened in two steps. In 2023, CEO Andy Jassy announced that corporate employees would be expected to work in the office at least three days a week, effective May 1, 2023. In September 2024, the company announced that corporate employees would be expected in the office five days a week starting in January 2025, according to Fast Company’s report.
Amazon presented in-person work as a way to strengthen collaboration and learning. In his 2023 employee message, Jassy wrote, “Learning from one another is easier in-person,” and said being together helped teams connect and work through complex trade-offs. That is the company’s rationale; it does not by itself establish that the policy improved productivity.
Why did corporate employees object?
For corporate employees, the dispute centered on flexibility and the requirement to be in an office five days a week. Fast Company reported that some workers were looking for remote jobs or considering leaving after the announcement.

A Strategic Organizing Center (SOC) survey reported by Fast Company offers a snapshot of that discontent, not a representative estimate of all Amazon employees. The survey collected responses from 1,065 Amazon corporate employees during November 2024. Respondents were reached through public social media, digital ads, and worker circulation in private forums. Among those respondents, 48% said they had applied for new jobs, and 68% said they were somewhat or very likely to leave Amazon within a year. The recruitment approach does not establish that those shares describe the full corporate workforce.
What were warehouse and operations workers asking for?
Warehouse and operations workers were organizing around pay and workplace conditions—not the corporate office-attendance rule. Their demands were proposals, not terms Amazon had agreed to provide.

Local calls for higher wages and safety
Ars reported that workers at the STL8 facility called for at least $25 an hour and better safety. The story quoted organizing-committee member Ash Judd saying workers had “made this $1.50 raise happen through our tireless organizing, and we’ll keep fighting until we reach $25.” The quote describes that local campaign, not a company-wide wage agreement.
Amazon Labor Union-IBT Local 1’s proposed terms
Amazon Labor Union-IBT Local 1’s posted proposals call for a $30 starting wage, annual increases tied to the Consumer Price Index or at least 3%, and an end to the three-year wage cap. The proposals also seek changes to paid time off, retirement benefits, and safety. They are demands on the union’s contract page, not a signed contract or achieved terms.

How do those demands compare with Amazon’s reported operations pay?
In September 2026, Amazon said it would raise the minimum starting wage for eligible U.S. full-time core operations roles to $20 an hour. The company also reported average hourly pay of nearly $24 and average total compensation exceeding $32 an hour, including benefits. These are Amazon-reported figures for the specified operations roles—not pay figures for corporate office workers or all Amazon employees. Total compensation includes benefits and is not the same as base wages.
| Figure | What it describes | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| $20/hour | Minimum starting wage | Amazon, September 2026; eligible U.S. full-time core operations roles |
| Nearly $24/hour | Average hourly pay | Amazon, September 2026; eligible U.S. core operations employees |
| More than $32/hour | Average total compensation, including benefits | Amazon, September 2026; eligible U.S. core operations employees |
| At least $25/hour | Wage sought in a local campaign | Ars report on STL8 workers’ organizing; a demand, not an achieved pay rate |
| $30 starting wage | Proposed starting wage | Amazon Labor Union-IBT Local 1 contract proposals; a demand, not an agreed rate |
The figures are not directly interchangeable: Amazon’s 2026 company update describes operations pay, while the higher amounts are organizer demands. Neither the survey results about corporate employees’ job plans nor the operations pay figures measure the other group’s experience.

What do the two workplace disputes show—and what do they not show?
They show different concerns among different job groups. Corporate employees’ reported objections focused on required office attendance and lost flexibility. Warehouse and operations workers’ organizing focused on hourly pay, wage progression, benefits, safety, and working conditions. The events occurred within the same company, but the reporting does not establish that wage demands caused the RTO backlash or that both campaigns represented one shared workforce-wide demand.
There is also a relevant but separate labor-law development. In November 2024, the National Labor Relations Board announced that requiring employees, under threat of discipline or discharge, to attend meetings where employers express views on unionization violates the NLRA under the Board’s ruling. The Board said such meetings could be lawful if workers received advance notice of the subject, attendance was voluntary without adverse consequences, and attendance records were not kept. That ruling concerns union-related meetings; it does not decide whether Amazon’s return-to-office policy is lawful.
