Amazon’s five-day office mandate: What employees need to know in 2026

Amazon’s five-day return-to-office policy was announced in 2024 and took effect January 2, 2025—but it applies mainly to covered corporate roles, with exceptions and uneven local implementation.

Yes—Amazon announced a five-day return-to-office expectation for many corporate employees. CEO Andy Jassy announced it on September 16, 2024, with an effective date of January 2, 2025. It replaced the general three-day office baseline, but it was never an unconditional rule for every Amazon worker: approved remote arrangements, extenuating circumstances, role differences, and local office capacity could change an employee’s reporting requirements. As of August 18, 2026, the public sources cited here do not establish a company-wide repeal.

The short version

Amazon’s policy is real, but “all Amazon employees must sit in an office five days a week” is too broad. The announcement principally addressed corporate employees assigned to offices and jobs that Amazon considered effective to perform away from an office. It did not create one identical schedule for warehouse, delivery, field, customer-support, sales, fully remote, and other roles.

Date What changed
2021 Amazon moved away from one universal rule and gave director-level leaders more authority to determine team work arrangements. Amazon’s 2021 guidance.
May 1, 2023 Most corporate employees were expected to work from an office at least three days per week, with limited exceptions. Amazon’s 2023 update.
September 16, 2024 Jassy announced an expectation of five office days per week for covered corporate employees.
January 2, 2025 The five-day expectation was scheduled to take effect. The announcement was not an immediate September 2024 requirement.

Amazon’s announcement said the company wanted to work in the office “the way we were before” COVID-19. It described the expectation as applying outside extenuating circumstances or an already approved Remote Work Exception. Read the announcement.

What changed from the three-day rule?

The practical change was the number of expected office days: generally at least three under the May 2023 policy versus five under the January 2025 expectation. The five-day announcement should not be confused with Amazon’s first post-pandemic return-to-office policy. Nor does Jassy’s reference to pre-pandemic work establish that every employee had followed an identical five-day schedule before 2020.

Who is covered?

Corporate employees assigned to an office

The core audience was corporate staff whose work could be performed effectively from an office. An employee’s employing organization, job classification, assigned workplace, and written work-location designation matter more than the Amazon name alone.

Roles outside the standard corporate model

Sales, customer-support, field, logistics, warehouse, delivery, and other operational jobs may already have distinct work-location requirements. Amazon’s earlier guidance specifically identified some sales and customer-support roles as exceptions. The five-day announcement did not erase those role-specific arrangements.

Employees already designated remote

An employee with a formal remote designation or approved Remote Work Exception was not automatically treated the same as an office-assigned employee. Existing arrangements could continue, but informal manager permission should not be assumed to equal a written exception.

What exceptions were available?

  • Approved Remote Work Exceptions: Existing written approvals could permit a different work location.
  • Extenuating circumstances: Amazon’s public wording allowed consideration of circumstances that made the standard expectation impractical.
  • Role-specific arrangements: Some jobs operate under separate location rules.
  • Local workplace limits: An employee’s start date could differ when the assigned site lacked capacity.

“Exception” did not necessarily mean unlimited work from home. Scope, duration, approval authority, and documentation could vary. A disability, health issue, caregiving responsibility, long commute, or relocation problem should be handled through the applicable internal accommodation or work-location process; the public sources do not say that any particular request is automatically approved.

Why did Amazon make the change?

Jassy cited stronger culture, closer collaboration and connection, easier invention and problem-solving, employee development, and less bureaucracy. The company presented office attendance as part of improving organizational effectiveness.

The same announcement set a goal of increasing the ratio of individual contributors to managers by at least 15% by the end of the first quarter of 2025. That organizational target appeared alongside the office policy, but Amazon did not describe the return-to-office announcement in the cited material as a headcount-reduction program.

What happened when the mandate took effect?

January 2 was the policy date, not a guarantee of a ready desk

Reported office-space shortages delayed the return for thousands of workers in some cities, including Austin, Dallas, and Phoenix. Some individual reporting dates were pushed back by as much as four months. Bloomberg Law reported on the delays.

This creates two separate dates: January 2, 2025, was the company’s stated effective date, while an employee’s actual reporting date could depend on office assignment, seating capacity, team instructions, and an approved exception. A delayed start did not by itself show that Amazon had abandoned the policy.

Desks differed by location

Amazon said it would restore assigned desks in locations that had used them before the pandemic, including the Puget Sound and Arlington headquarters. Locations that had used agile desks, including much of Europe, would continue using that model. A five-day expectation therefore did not imply one global desk system.

What employees should verify

  1. Identify the employing organization and role. Confirm whether the job is covered by the corporate-office expectation or a separate operational arrangement.
  2. Check the assigned office and reporting location. Capacity and local implementation affected some start dates.
  3. Find the written work-location designation. Review HR records, offer documents, and formal team communications.
  4. Confirm any Remote Work Exception. Check its scope, end date, approving authority, and documentation requirements.
  5. Use the correct accommodation process. Do not treat ordinary inconvenience, a protected medical issue, caregiving, or relocation as interchangeable requests.
  6. Ask for the individual effective date and attendance instructions. Public sources do not establish one universal schedule, badge rule, or fixed 9-to-5 requirement for every team.

Relocation: what the public record does—and does not—show

Amazon previously required some corporate employees to relocate in connection with its three-day policy. That history means proximity to an assigned office could matter, but it does not prove that every employee covered by the 2025 expectation had to relocate or that one relocation rule applied worldwide. Bloomberg Law covered the earlier relocation issue.

Employee concerns and disputed interpretations

Coverage from CBS News, Bloomberg Law, and The Guardian described concerns about commuting, relocation, childcare and caregiving, lost flexibility, and whether full-time office attendance was necessary for technology work. Commentators also raised possible effects on retention and recruiting. Those concerns do not establish a particular number of resignations or a measured level of productivity change.

Some labor experts and outside observers argued that a strict office mandate could prompt voluntary departures or operate indirectly as a workforce-reduction tool. That is an interpretation, not Amazon’s stated explanation in the cited announcement. It should not be presented as proof that the policy was designed to force resignations, nor should it be conflated with separate layoffs or later organizational changes. Bloomberg Law reported on that debate.

What remains unclear publicly

  • There is no complete public rulebook covering every Amazon business, country, office, and job family.
  • The cited sources do not provide company-wide data showing how attendance was enforced or measured.
  • They do not establish a reliable number of resignations caused by the policy.
  • They do not establish a later company-wide repeal or modification as of August 18, 2026.
  • Individual reports about badge tracking, manager practices, or attendance hours may describe a team’s practice rather than a universal Amazon rule.

Bottom line for employees and candidates

Amazon did impose a five-day office expectation for many corporate employees beginning January 2, 2025. The accurate formulation is narrower than “everyone had to return”: coverage depended on role and workplace, formal remote exceptions and accepted extenuating circumstances remained relevant, and some locations delayed reporting because they lacked space. Anyone deciding whether a job requires relocation or daily office attendance should rely on the written work-location terms and current instructions for that specific role, not on a generalized headline.
