It was an invitation-only retreat, not a public festival or a bookable getaway. The secrecy and timing drew extra attention because Amazon was then in a high-profile dispute with publisher Hachette.
What Campfire was—and what “top secret” meant
GeekWire’s September 21, 2014 report, summarizing contemporaneous coverage by The New York Times and the Santa Fe New Mexican, described Campfire as a weekend literary retreat hosted by Bezos in Santa Fe. The Times account, as relayed by GeekWire, said “Dozens of well-known novelists” attended and described lavish meals, gifts, and discussion beneath desert stars. Those are details attributed to that reporting, not an independent attendee account from GeekWire.

Coverage portrayed the event as highly private: guests and local businesses reportedly kept quiet, and secondary reporting reproducing the Times account described the weekend as off the record. That does not establish that every guest signed a nondisclosure agreement. Bezos had said at Amazon’s 2014 annual meeting, as quoted by GeekWire: “Our primary approach is, we talk when we have something to say. I never think of us as secretive, I think of us as mostly quiet.”
Where it took place and who was reported to attend
The 2014 venue was identified as the Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort and Spa, north of Santa Fe. Contemporary accounts named Jeff Tweedy, Neil Armstrong, and Werner Herzog among past attendees. These names are examples from coverage, not a complete or verified guest list for the 2014 weekend.

GeekWire also reported that James Patterson, a Hachette author who had spoken at the previous year’s Campfire, was not invited back in 2014. According to the Times as quoted in that coverage, Patterson said he would not have attended even if invited.
Why Amazon’s dispute with Hachette mattered
Campfire attracted scrutiny against the backdrop of Amazon’s public conflict with Hachette over publishing terms and negotiations. Authors criticized Amazon’s tactics during the dispute. The reported absence of Patterson—a prominent Hachette author and prior Campfire speaker—made the guest list politically sensitive, though the coverage does not establish why he was not invited back.

A later Campfire was reported in Santa Barbara
Writer Noah Hawley’s first-person account, published in 2026, describes his attendance at a Campfire in Santa Barbara in 2018. He recalled an annual three-night gathering at a private resort with more than 80 invitees, talks, meals, socializing, private travel, security, and luxury gifts. Those details describe the edition Hawley attended; they do not show that the 2014 gathering permanently moved or that Campfire continues today.
Hawley recalled hearing a revealing question: “The most common question I heard was ‘Why am I here?’” He also wrote: “I’ve spent my whole career trying to figure out how the world works. I didn’t realize I could just come here and ask the people who ran it.” His account gives a later attendee’s perspective on the event’s unusual mix of literary and influential guests, but it should not be read as a description of the Santa Fe weekend.

Is Campfire still held, or can the public attend?
The available reporting establishes private gatherings in 2014 and 2018, not Campfire’s current status, present venue, or a public application process. The 2014 Santa Fe event was described as invitation-only, so readers should not mistake it for a public literary festival, residency, or travel experience. Amazon’s separate literary grantmaking is not Campfire: in 2026, Amazon said its Literary Partnership awarded $1 million in grants to 102 organizations across more than 25 states and had provided more than $19 million since 2009.
