Amazon’s roughly 30,000 corporate-job figure began as a reported plan, not a confirmed count of people who had lost their jobs. Reuters reported in October 2025 that the company was considering cuts of up to 30,000. Amazon later announced reductions of approximately 14,000 corporate roles in October 2025 and about 16,000 more in January 2026. Those rounds add up to roughly 30,000 positions, but the sources do not establish a final tally of actual separations, and additional reductions were reported in 2026.
What does the 30,000 figure mean?
On October 27, 2025, Reuters reported, citing three people familiar with the matter, that Amazon planned to cut as many as 30,000 corporate jobs. The report described 30,000 as a possible upper figure: the sources said the number could change, and an Amazon spokesperson declined to comment at the time. Reuters’ initial report therefore did not verify that 30,000 employees had been or would be separated.
Amazon subsequently announced two corporate-role reductions that together roughly match that figure:

The 14,000 and 16,000 figures add up to about 30,000 announced role reductions. That arithmetic is not a verified count of people who left Amazon. Some employees were offered the opportunity to seek internal roles, and the initial reported plan was subject to change. Later reports describe more cuts in 2026 but do not provide a consolidated companywide separation total.

Who was affected—and who was not necessarily affected?
The announcements concern Amazon’s corporate workforce, not a blanket cut to every part of the company. Reuters’ October 2025 report identified People Experience and Technology (PXT), operations, Devices & Services, and Amazon Web Services as areas that could be affected. Reporting on the January 2026 round described it as a further corporate reduction across the company.
Those descriptions do not mean that every team, location, or role in a named division was affected. They also do not establish that warehouse employees or Amazon’s entire workforce were included in the announced corporate reductions.

For scale, the Associated Press reported in October 2025 that Amazon had about 350,000 corporate employees and 1.56 million employees overall. These are contemporaneous context figures, not current headcount. AP’s October 2025 report
Why did Amazon say it was cutting roles?
In its October 28, 2025 statement, Amazon SVP of People Experience and Technology Beth Galetti said the company was reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and moving resources toward its priorities. She also said Amazon would reduce staff in some areas while hiring in others. Amazon’s statement

Reuters’ initial coverage also described the plan as an effort to reduce expenses and address pandemic-era overhiring. Later reporting quoted CEO Andy Jassy discussing company culture and bureaucracy. What support did Amazon describe for affected employees?
For the October 2025 round, Amazon said most impacted employees would have 90 days to look for another internal position, with timing subject to local laws. Employees who did not find or pursue an internal role would receive transition support, including severance pay, outplacement services, and health-insurance benefits. Amazon’s October announcement
The Associated Press reported similar internal-search and transition-support arrangements for U.S.-based staff in the January 2026 round. Were there more Amazon cuts in 2026?
Later reports said Amazon confirmed reductions in its Artificial General Intelligence organization in July 2026 but did not disclose the number. A September 2026 compilation of California and Washington WARN notices also identified later site-specific notices. As of the latest reporting represented here, there is no consolidated figure establishing the total number of Amazon employees who actually left because of all the reported reductions through 2026. The initial 30,000 figure was a reported plan; the later 14,000 and 16,000 announcements describe role reductions, not a verified final tally of individual departures.
