A worker died at Amazon’s PDX9 warehouse in Troutdale, Oregon, on April 6, 2026. Employees told The Western Edge that some work continued for more than an hour while the worker lay on the floor. The outlet first reported the death on April 13, but that one-week gap does not by itself establish that Amazon concealed it from the public. The accounts and Amazon’s response are reported claims, not an independent finding about what happened.
What happened at Amazon’s PDX9 warehouse?
The Western Edge reported that an employee called 911 at 1:55 p.m. on Monday, April 6. According to the outlet’s account of the call, a dispatcher coached an employee on using a defibrillator; a second caller described the worker’s condition. The outlet said its reporting drew on employee interviews and 911 calls obtained through a public-records request. It did not publish an official medical examiner finding.
Employees interviewed by The Western Edge said workers were instructed to keep doing their tasks for more than an hour as the worker lay on the floor and management considered next steps. The outlet reported that a section of the warehouse was eventually closed when paramedics arrived. The employees’ identities were withheld, and the outlet used changed names. One employee, identified as Sam, recalled a manager saying, “Just turn around and not look. Let’s get back to work.” These are employee accounts reported by the outlet, not findings by a regulator.

When was the death reported, and does the timing prove a cover-up?

The interval between the death and the first report establishes when the outlet published its account; it does not establish when Amazon informed employees, authorities, family members or the public. The reports cited here do not prove that Amazon hid the death for a week. The Western Edge’s subheading, “A worker died at Amazon’s Troutdale warehouse last week. Employees were told to look away,” is the outlet’s framing of its employee accounts, not an official determination.
What did Amazon say about the death and the facility’s response?
The Western Edge reported that Amazon attributed the death to a “pre-existing medical condition.” TechCrunch separately reported that Amazon said Oregon OSHA determined the incident was non-work-related. The underlying agency determination is not included in either report, so the OSHA conclusion here is Amazon’s account as reported by TechCrunch, not an independently reviewed agency record.

Amazon spokesperson Sam Stephenson told TechCrunch: “We’re deeply saddened by the passing of a member of our team, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their loved ones during this difficult time.” TechCrunch also reported Amazon’s account that workers were sent home early and paid for the rest of their shift, the night shift was canceled, and scheduled employees were paid.
TechCrunch’s April 13 report attributes these statements to Amazon.

What remains unconfirmed?
The reports reviewed here do not provide an official medical examiner finding or the underlying Oregon OSHA determination. They also do not establish a confirmed cause of death beyond Amazon’s attribution to a pre-existing medical condition. TechCrunch relayed worker speculation that heat may have contributed after soundproof curtains allegedly reduced airflow; that speculation is not a confirmed cause and should not be treated as one.

Amazon vice president Sarah Rhoads reported that the company’s global recordable incident rate improved 43% over six years, using Amazon’s 2025 data. Amazon defines that rate as including work-related injuries that require more than basic first aid. Amazon also said it had invested more than $2.5 billion in safety efforts since 2019, in its account of full-year 2025 safety data. These are company-published, global figures; they do not describe PDX9 or establish what happened in this death. Amazon’s 2025 workplace safety figures are its own reporting.
